It's finally election night,

ようやく選挙日です。

and I imagine that's welcome news to most of you, because, let's face it,

多くの皆さんにとってこれは嬉しいお知らせでしょう。正直言うと、

this has been an exhausting, stressful, and sometimes downright weird election for all of us.

今回は私たち皆にとって、疲れさせられ、ストレスが多く、また時には実に変な選挙でしたよね。

But here's what I want everybody to know:

しかし、皆に知ってほしいことがあります。

While we've certainly seen some new things this time around, what isn't new is that our democracy has always been rowdy and raucous.

この時期いくつか新しいことを目撃したのは確かですが、昔からそのままなことは、我が国の民主主義はいつも騒がしいということです。

We've been through tough and divisive elections before,

私たちは以前にも困難で、意見が割れる選挙を乗り越えてきました。

and we've always come out stronger for it.

そして乗り越えた後は必ず以前より強くなって戻ってきます。

That's what makes America special.

それこそがアメリカ合衆国の一番の特徴です。

The idea that, while progress isn't guaranteed, each of us has the power to choose our path,

進歩は保証されてはいないが、各市民が自分の道を選択する権力を持つという考えです。

not just on nights like this, but every day in between.

今夜のような時だけでなく、毎日それが言えます。

It is a beautiful and fragile gift, and we should treat it that way.

それは美しいが、もろい贈り物で、私たちはそれにふさわしい扱いをするべきです。

So, whether your chosen candidates win or lose tonight, let's all agree, not only to stay engaged, but to push ourselves to do even better.

あなたが選んだ候補者が勝ったとしても、負けたとしても、皆さんは民主主義に関与し続けるだけでなく、さらに改善できるように精一杯努力しましょう。

To vote not just when the president is on the ballot,

大統領が投票にかけられたときに投票するだけではなく、

but for Congress, and mayor, and school board, and dog catcher.

議会、市長、教育委員会、野犬捕獲員の投票にも参加しましょう。

To educate ourselves on the issues and join with our neighbors in tackling the ones that face our communities.

問題について学び、隣人と協力して、私たちの共同体が直面する課題に取り組みましょう。

And most importantly, to see each other not simply as Democrats or Republicans,

そして最も重要なことに、お互いに単に民主党員または共和党員としてではなく、

but as fellow Americans.

同じアメリカ市民として見ましょう。

To treat each other with the respect and empathy and kinship that title—American—commands.

「アメリカ市民」という名にふさわしい尊敬と思いやりと親近感を持ってお互いを扱いましょう。

That's especially true here on a place like Twitter, but it's something we can bring with us to everything we do, online and off.

それはツイッターのような場所は特に当てはまりますが、私たちがするいかなることにおいても言えます。オンラインでも、現実でも。

We can choose to see the best in one another.

私たちはお互いの長所を見るようにすることができます。
