but, it got me thinking about two words

ですが、そこで２つ単語を思い出しました。

that many students find very difficult to use.

それは多くの学生があまり使いこなせない単語です。

Today, I want to talk to you about 'make' and 'do'.

今日は「make：つくる」と「do：する」を紹介します。

So why are these words so difficult to use?

これらはどうして使いにくいのでしょうか？

The answer is that both words have very similar meanings

それはこの２つの単語はとてもよく似た意味をもっているからです。

and, in many languages

さらに、他の言語で

they use just one word

この２つは１つの単語で表現されます。

like 'hacer' in Spanish

例えばスペイン語では「hacer」。

So what is the main difference?

では大きく違うところはなんでしょうか？

Well with 'make' you are creating something

「make」は「何かを作り出す」の時に使います。

that didn't exist before

それは今まで存在しないものです。

Whilst with 'do' you're completing a task

でも「do」は「ある仕事を完成する」の時に使います。

that already exists

その仕事はもう存在しているものです。

Now please remember

しかし注意点は

as with all English concepts

英語の基本として

there are always exceptions

例外が必ずあることです。

and I will talk about those after I've explained the most important parts.

私は一番大事なところを説明してから例外を紹介しますね。

So things that we can create from scratch:

では存在していない状態から作り出せるものは：

A coffee or tea: shall I make you one?

コーヒーやお茶などです：みなさんにも入れてあげましょうか？

An offer: I'd like to make you an offer.

提案です：あなたに提案します。

Can I make a suggestion?

提案してもいいですか？

Alright, but only if you make me a promise.

いいですよ。でもその前に約束をしてください。

Also: I think I've made a mistake.

また：私は間違いました。

I'd like to make a complaint!

私は文句を言いたいです！

Who's making that noise?

誰が騒音を立てていますか？

I've made a really important discovery.

私は重要な発見をしました。

Most things to do with business go with make

ビジネスと関するものは「make」を使います。

for example: profit and loss

例えば：「profit：利益」と「loss：損失」

Last month I made a loss

先月の営業は損失となりましたが、

but this month I want to make a profit.

今月利益を得たいと思っています。

You can also make an investment into somebody else's business.

また誰かの事業にも投資ができます。

If you're sure that your football team is going to win

もし応援しているチームが勝てそうなら、

It could be an idea to make a bet on them

そのチームに賭けて

to try and earn some extra cash

もっとお金を稼げるかもしれません。

And also, if things go really well for you

そしてもし大当たりしたら

and you earn a lot of money

たくさんお金を稼いで、

you will have made a fortune.

財産を作ることになります。

Now let's talk about 'do'.

では「do」について話しましょう。

I've already told you that 'do' is when you complete a task that already exists

先ほど言った通り、「do」は「既に存在する仕事を完成する」の時に使います。

For example: every night I do my homework.

例えば：私は毎晩宿題をします。

Next week I have to do a test.

来週テストを受けないといけません

In science we did experiments.

科学の実験をしました。

I hope I don't have to do any interviews soon!

面接がなければいいです！

Next summer, I think I'll do a language course.

次の夏、私は言語のレッスンを受けるかもしれません。

Housework chores are tasks, and that's an important one to remember

家事も仕事です。これは重要なことですね。

I hate doing the shopping.

私は買い物が嫌いです。

I don't mind doing the dishes

皿を洗うのは別にかまいませんよ。

but I loathe (and that means really hate)

でも私は

doing the ironing.

服にアイロンをかけるのは本当に嫌いです。

You can also do well or badly at something

また「do well：よくやった」と「do badly：失敗する」という使い方があります。

I did badly in an exam last summer, so now I have to do it again.

去年の夏の試験の結果が良くなかったから、もう一度受けなきゃいけません。

You can do bad or good.

「do bad：うまくできたり」、「do goodうまくできなかったり」に使われます。

Doing good is doing something positive

「Doing good」は「プラスになる良いことをする」の意味です。

If you eat healthily, you do yourself good.

もし健康な食事をするなら、 「do yourself good：自分の体を大事にする」ことになります。

You also do your best, or do your worst.

「do your best：ベストを尽くす」と「do your worst：最も悪いことをする（やってみろ）」という使い方もあります。

If you run a race, you should do your best

もしランニングの試合に参加したら、

to try and achieve the best possible time.

成績を出すために全力で走るべきです。

Business, just the word, goes with do.

I also said that housework and chores go with do.

But when I get up in the morning I should make my bed.

朝起きて「ベッドを整える」の整えるは「make」を使います。

I also said that make was to do with creation

「make」は「作り出す」と関係があることも言いましたが、

So we create art, right?

芸術を作る（create art）でしょうか？

Wrong! We do a drawing.

違いますね！絵画を描く（do art）です

And finally, girls, hair and make-up.

最後に、女の子が好きな髪型と化粧です。

I do my hair, and I also do my make-up.

私は髪型を整えて、化粧をします。

Ooh! Sorry! Just doing my lipstick.
