I was a government major,

which means I had to write a lot of papers.

Now, when a normal student writes a paper,

普通の学生が レポートを書く場合

they might spread the work out a little like this.

作業量はこんな感じに 分布していることでしょう

So, you know --

(Laughter)

you get started maybe a little slowly,

はじめは ゆっくりですが

but you get enough done in the first week

最初の週 十分に 進めておいて

that, with some heavier days later on,

後半 多少負荷が 高くはなっても

everything gets done, things stay civil.

秩序ある状態が 保たれています

(Laughter)

(笑)

And I would want to do that like that.

私だって そんな風に やりたいと思います

That would be the plan.

予定としては

I would have it all ready to go,

すぐ取りかかる つもりでいますが

but then, actually, the paper would come along,

実際にレポートを やる段になると

and then I would kind of do this.

私の場合 こんな風に なってしまいます

(Laughter)

(笑)

And that would happen every single paper.

毎回こういうことに なるんです

But then came my 90-page senior thesis,

それから90ページの 卒論を書くことになりました

a paper you're supposed to spend a year on.

１年かけて 書くべきものです

And I knew for a paper like that, my normal work flow was not an option.

いつものようなやり方が 通用しないのは分かっていました

It was way too big a project.

規模が大きすぎます

So I planned things out,

それで計画を立てて

and I decided I kind of had to go something like this.

こんな感じでやろうと 決めました

This is how the year would go.

１年の計画です

So I'd start off light,

はじめは軽く

and I'd bump it up in the middle months,

中間で少し上がり

and then at the end, I would kick it up into high gear.

終盤でスパートをかける

Just like a little staircase.

なだらかな階段の ような感じです

How hard could it be to walk up the stairs?

この階段を 上っていくのは

No big deal, right?

難しいことでは ないでしょう

But then, the funniest thing happened.

しかし おかしなことが 起きました

Those first few months?

最初の数ヶ月が

They came and went,

やって来ては 過ぎましたが

and I couldn't quite do stuff.

何もできませんでした

So we had an awesome new revised plan.

そのため計画は こう変更されます

(Laughter)

(笑)

And then --

それから —

(Laughter)

(笑)

But then those middle months actually went by,

真ん中の期間も 過ぎて行きましたが

and I didn't really write words,

書くことができず

and so we were here.

こういう状態になります

And then two months turned into one month,

さらに２ヶ月が １ヶ月になり

which turned into two weeks.

それがさらに ２週間になります

And one day I woke up

ある朝 目覚めると

with three days until the deadline,

締め切りまで ３日しかありません (笑)

still not having written a word,

まだ一言も 書けておらず

and so I did the only thing I could:

選択の余地はありません

I wrote 90 pages over 72 hours,

90ページの論文を 72時間で書くことになり

pulling not one but two all-nighters --

２晩連続で 徹夜しました

humans are not supposed to pull two all-nighters --

人間の体は そんなことするように できてはいませんが

sprinted across campus,

キャンパスを 全力で駆け抜け

dove in slow motion,

時がスローモーションに変わり

and got it in just at the deadline.

締め切りの瞬間に 提出しました

I thought that was the end of everything.

それですべて終わったと 思っていましたが

But a week later I get a call,

１週間後に 電話が来ました

and it's the school.

大学からです

And they say, "Is this Tim Urban?"

｢ティム・アーバンさんでしょうか？｣

And I say, "Yeah."

｢はい｣

And they say, "We need to talk about your thesis."

｢提出された論文について お話しがあります｣

And I say, "OK."

｢はあ｣

And they say,

それで言われたのは

"It's the best one we've ever seen."

｢あんな素晴らしい卒論は 見たことがありません｣

(Laughter)

(笑)

(Applause)

That did not happen.

なんてことは 起こりませんでした

(Laughter)

(笑)

It was a very, very bad thesis.

まったく酷い論文でした

I just wanted to enjoy that one moment when all of you thought,

No, no, it was very, very bad.

Anyway, today I'm a writer-blogger guy.

現在の私は 物書きで

I write the blog Wait But Why.

｢Wait But Why｣(だけど何で？) という ブログを書いています

And a couple of years ago, I decided to write about procrastination.

２年ほど前に｢先延ばし｣について 書こうと決めました

My behavior has always perplexed the non-procrastinators around me,

私の振る舞いが いつも 周りの人を困惑させていたので

and I wanted to explain to the non-procrastinators of the world

先延ばし屋の頭の中で 何が起きていて

what goes on in the heads of procrastinators,

私たちがなぜ そんな風なのか

and why we are the way we are.

世の先延ばし屋でない人たちに 説明したいと思ったんです

Now, I had a hypothesis

先延ばし屋の脳と

that the brains of procrastinators were actually different

そうでない人の脳には

than the brains of other people.

きっと違いが あるはずだと思い

And to test this, I found an MRI lab

それを確認するため

that actually let me scan both my brain

私の脳と 先延ばし屋でないことが 確かな人の脳の

and the brain of a proven non-procrastinator,

MRIを取ってくれる 所を見つけ

so I could compare them.

比較してみる ことにしました

I actually brought them here to show you today.

その結果を今日 ここに持ってきています

I want you to take a look carefully to see if you can notice a difference.

違いが分かるか注意して 見てほしいと思います

I know that if you're not a trained brain expert,

脳の専門家でもなければ 分かりにくい違いですが

it's not that obvious, but just take a look, OK?

まあ とにかく 見てみてください

So here's the brain of a non-procrastinator.

これが先延ばし屋では ない人の脳です

(Laughter)

[理性的意志決定者] (笑)

Now ...

これに対し

here's my brain.

私の脳だと —

(Laughter)

[すぐにご褒美が欲しいおサル] (笑)

There is a difference.

これが両者の違いです

Both brains have a Rational Decision-Maker in them,

どちらの脳にも ｢理性的意志決定者｣がいますが

but the procrastinator's brain

先延ばし屋の脳の場合には それに加えて

also has an Instant Gratification Monkey.

｢すぐにご褒美が欲しいおサル｣ がいるんです

Now, what does this mean for the procrastinator?

それが先延ばしに どう関わるのか？

Well, it means everything's fine until this happens.

万事は順調です こうなるまでは

[This is a perfect time to get some work done.] [Nope!]

｢少し仕事しといた方がいいな｣ ｢やだね｣

So the Rational Decision-Maker will make the rational decision

理性的意志決定者は

to do something productive,

何か生産的なことをするという 理性的決断をしますが

but the Monkey doesn't like that plan,

おサルはそれが 気に入りません

so he actually takes the wheel,

それで舵を横取りして 言うのです

and he says, "Actually, let's read the entire Wikipedia page

｢そうだ ナンシー・ケリガンと トーニャ・ハーディングの

of the Nancy Kerrigan/ Tonya Harding scandal,

事件に関する ウィキペディアの記事を読もう

because I just remembered that that happened.

そんなことがあったのを 思い出したから

(Laughter)

(笑)

Then --

それから —

(Laughter)

(笑)

Then we're going to go over to the fridge,

冷蔵庫を調べに行って

to see if there's anything new in there since 10 minutes ago.

10分前から何か変わっている ことがないか確認しなきゃ

After that, we're going to go on a YouTube spiral

そのあとは YouTubeスパイラルが待っている

that starts with videos of Richard Feynman talking about magnets

リチャード･ファインマンが 磁石について語るビデオから始って

and ends much, much later with us watching interviews

ずーっと後の

with Justin Bieber's mom.

ジャスティン･ビーバーのママの インタビューまで見るんだ

(Laughter)

(笑)

"All of that's going to take a while,

それで当分 手一杯だから

so we're not going to really have room on the schedule for any work today.

悪いけど 今日はもう

Sorry!"

仕事を入れる 余裕なんてないね｣

(Sigh)

(ため息)

Now, what is going on here?

何が起きているんでしょう？

The Instant Gratification Monkey does not seem like a guy

おサルは

you want behind the wheel.

舵取りをして欲しい 相手ではありません

He lives entirely in the present moment.

今の瞬間だけに 生きています

He has no memory of the past, no knowledge of the future,

過去の記憶も 未来についての知識もなく

and he only cares about two things:

気にかけるのは ただ２つ

easy and fun.

ラクで楽しいことだけ

Now, in the animal world, that works fine.

動物の世界であれば それで問題はありません

If you're a dog

犬であれば

and you spend your whole life doing nothing other than easy and fun things,

ずっとラクで楽しいことだけ やって過ごすのは

you're a huge success!

大成功の生き方でしょう

(Laughter)

(笑)

And to the Monkey,

おサルにとっては

humans are just another animal species.

人間も動物の一種に 過ぎません

You have to keep well-slept, well-fed and propagating into the next generation,

よく食べ よく眠り 次の世代を 生み出しさえすればいい

which in tribal times might have worked OK.

原始生活をしていた頃は それでも良かったかもしれませんが

But, if you haven't noticed, now we're not in tribal times.

今や原始生活をしている わけではありません

We're in an advanced civilization, and the Monkey does not know what that is.

我々は進んだ文明社会にいますが おサルにはそれが何か分かっていません

Which is why we have another guy in our brain,

脳にもう１人

the Rational Decision-Maker,

｢理性的意志決定者｣が いるのはそのためで

who gives us the ability to do things no other animal can do.

他の動物にはない能力を 与えてくれます

We can visualize the future.

私たちは未来を想像し

We can see the big picture.

大局を見ることができ

We can make long-term plans.

長期的計画を 立てられます

And he wants to take all of that into account.

理性的意志決定者は すべてのことを考慮に入れ

And he wants to just have us do

今 自分の為すべきことを

whatever makes sense to be doing right now.

やらせようとします

Now, sometimes it makes sense

ラクで楽しいことを するのが

to be doing things that are easy and fun,

理にかなっている こともあります

like when you're having dinner or going to bed

晩ご飯の時や 眠る時や

or enjoying well-earned leisure time.

余暇の時など

That's why there's an overlap.

両者には 重なる部分があり

Sometimes they agree.

意見が合うことも あります

But other times, it makes much more sense

しかし 大局的な判断として

to be doing things that are harder and less pleasant,

難しくてあまり楽しくない ことをするのが

for the sake of the big picture.

理にかなう場合もあります

And that's when we have a conflict.

そういうときに 対立が生じます

And for the procrastinator,

先延ばし屋の場合

that conflict tends to end a certain way every time,

この対立がいつも ある結果に終わる傾向があり

leaving him spending a lot of time in this orange zone,

多くの時間をオレンジ色で示した部分で 過ごすことになります

an easy and fun place that's entirely out of the Makes Sense circle.

やるのが理にかなわない ラクで楽しいことです

I call it the Dark Playground.

私はこの領域を ｢暗黒の遊び場｣と呼んでいます

(Laughter)

(笑)

Now, the Dark Playground is a place

暗黒の遊び場は —

that all of you procrastinators out there know very well.

先延ばし屋がみんな よく知っている場所で

It's where leisure activities happen

遊んでいる場合 じゃないときに

at times when leisure activities are not supposed to be happening.

遊ぶことになる場所です

The fun you have in the Dark Playground

暗黒の遊び場での楽しみは 実際に楽しくはありません

isn't actually fun, because it's completely unearned,

それは得るべきではない 楽しみで

and the air is filled with guilt, dread, anxiety, self-hatred --

罪悪感 怖れ 不安 自己嫌悪といった

all of those good procrastinator feelings.

お馴染みの 先延ばしの感覚に 満ちています

And the question is, in this situation, with the Monkey behind the wheel,

問題は おサルが 舵を取っている状況で

how does the procrastinator ever get himself over here to this blue zone,

先延ばし屋は いかにして青い領域

a less pleasant place, but where really important things happen?

快適さは劣るが本当に重要なことが 起きる場所に 移れるかということです

Well, turns out the procrastinator has a guardian angel,

実は先延ばし屋には 守護天使がいて

someone who's always looking down on him and watching over him

いつも見守って くれています

in his darkest moments --

最悪の時だろうとも

someone called the Panic Monster.

それは｢パニック･モンスター｣とも 呼ばれています

(Laughter)

[パニック･モンスター] (笑)

Now, the Panic Monster is dormant most of the time,

パニック・モンスターは ほとんどの場合 眠っていますが

but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close

締め切りが迫る 面目を失いそう 職業上の危機といった

or there's danger of public embarrassment,

恐ろしい結末が 近づいているとき

a career disaster or some other scary consequence.

突然目を覚まします

And importantly, he's the only thing the Monkey is terrified of.

重要なのは それがおサルの唯一 恐れるものだということです

Now, he became very relevant in my life pretty recently,

ごく最近 私はそのお世話に なることがありました

because the people of TED reached out to me about six months ago

半年前にTEDの人たちが コンタクトしてきて

and invited me to do a TED Talk.

TEDトークをしてみないかと 誘われたのです

(Laughter)

(笑)

Now, of course, I said yes.

もちろん｢やります｣と答えました

It's always been a dream of mine to have done a TED Talk in the past.

「昔TEDトークをしたことがある」と言える ようになるのが 長年の夢だったんです

(Laughter)

[TEDトークならしたことあるよ] (笑)

(Applause)

(拍手)

But in the middle of all this excitement,

この興奮のさなかにあって

the Rational Decision-Maker seemed to have something else on his mind.

理性的意志決定者は 別のことを気にかけています

He was saying, "Are we clear on what we just accepted?

｢何を引き受けたか 分かってる？

Do we get what's going to be now happening one day in the future?

将来のある日に起きることが何か 分かってんの？

We need to sit down and work on this right now."

今すぐ腰を据えて 取りかからないと！｣

And the Monkey said, "Totally agree, but let's just open Google Earth

おサルが それに答えます ｢まったく賛成だけど

and zoom in to the bottom of India, like 200 feet above the ground,

取りあえず Googleアースを開いて インドの下端を地上60mまで拡大し

and we're gonna scroll up for two and a half hours til we get to the top of the country,

２時間半スクロールして 上の端まで行ったら

so we can get a better feel for India."

インドのイメージが よく掴めるんじゃないかな｣

(Laughter)

(笑)

So that's what we did that day.

それで その日はずっと それをしていました

(Laughter)

(笑)

As six months turned into four and then two and then one,

６ヶ月が ４ヶ月になり ２ヶ月になり １ヶ月になり

the people of TED decided to release the speakers.

TEDが講演者の一覧を 公開しました

And I opened up the website, and there was my face

そのページを開くと

staring right back at me.

見つめ返す自分の顔が そこにありました

And guess who woke up?

それで誰が 目覚めたでしょう？

(Laughter)

(笑)

So the Panic Monster starts losing his mind,

パニック・モンスターが 半狂乱になり

and a few seconds later, the whole system's in mayhem.

すぐにシステム全体が 大混乱に陥りました

(Laughter)

(笑)

And the Monkey -- remember, he's terrified of the Panic Monster --

おサルがパニック・モンスターを 恐れるのを思い出してください

boom, he's up the tree!

それで木の上に 逃げ出します

And finally,

これでようやく

finally, the Rational Decision-Maker can take the wheel

理性的意志決定者が 舵を取れるようになって

and I can start working on the talk.

私は講演の準備に 取りかかれました

Now, the Panic Monster explains

パニック･モンスターにより

all kinds of pretty insane procrastinator behavior,

先延ばし屋の常軌を逸した 振る舞いも説明でき

like how someone like me could spend two weeks

２週間かけて レポートの

unable to start the opening sentence of a paper,

出だしの１行も 書けずにいたのが

and then miraculously find the unbelievable work ethic

奇跡のように強烈な 労働倫理に目覚め

to stay up all night and write eight pages.

夜通しかけて８ページ書き上げる なんてことも起きるのです

And this entire situation, with the three characters --

これが ３人の登場人物のいる 全体の状況

this is the procrastinator's system.

先延ばし屋のシステムです

It's not pretty, but in the end, it works.

きれいなものではありませんが 最終的には機能します

This is what I decided to write about on the blog just a couple of years ago.

これが２年前ブログに 書くことにした内容です

When I did, I was amazed by the response.

書いてみると ブログへの反応に 驚くことになりました

Literally thousands of emails came in,

文字通り何千という メールが

from all different kinds of people from all over the world,

世界中から 寄せられました

doing all different kinds of things.

実に様々な人々から

These are people who were nurses, bankers, painters, engineers

看護師 銀行員 画家 エンジニア

and lots and lots of PhD students.

そして実に多くの 大学院生

(Laughter)

(笑)

And they were all writing, saying the same thing:

みんな書いている ことは一緒でした

"I have this problem too."

｢自分も同じ問題を抱えています｣

But what struck me was the contrast between the light tone of the post

しかし そのブログ記事の軽さと

and the heaviness of these emails.

受け取ったメールの重さは 対照的でした

These people were writing with intense frustration

先延ばしが彼らの人生に 及ぼしている影響への

about what procrastination had done to their lives,

強い苛立ちをもって 書かれていたんです

about what this Monkey had done to them.

おサルのせいで どんな目に遭っているかと

And I thought about this, and I said,

それを見て思いました

well, if the procrastinator's system works, then what's going on?

先延ばし屋のシステムは機能するのに どうなっているんだろう？
