  • Lets hear the numbers ladies and gentlemen, you

  • can see them on your screen. Let's count this down...

  • In October 2013. seventy players from around the

  • world competed in the Season 3 League of Legends World Championship

  • You know, a lot of people ask me the question,

  • What's it like? Do you look back and remember the journey and what not?

  • To me it's like climbing a mountain. I very much

  • remember being at the base of the mountain and

  • looking up, and we sort of think we know where

  • we are going. Then everyday it's, you know, one

  • foot in front of the other. You just make a mistake

  • with your wires, or you plug a router in wrong,

  • you can tank a whole performance. If you want to

  • talk about mistakes from the Season 2 Quarters,

  • we had some outages during the matches and ultimately

  • the game couldn't be recovered and we had to have

  • these teams start over.

  • So unbelievably patient with us...

  • But then periodically, you look back behind you

  • and your like, Wow! We have come a long way.

  • When it comes to thinking about League as a spectator

  • sport, we kind of always felt, initially that,

  • Hey, there is some hardcore subset of fans that are going to be like us.

  • That want to watch other people play games,

  • but I don't think we were ever very confident that

  • a large percentage of our audience would actually

  • be interested in experiencing it like a sport.

  • I think people really started to connect the dots.

  • Everyone had dreamed of this type of thing becoming

  • a reality, and it's starting to be here.

  • Get up, you lazy bum. Get up. Why?

  • Gwang-Jin (Piglet) was a mama's boy when he was young.

  • The kind of baby that doesn't detach from a mother's lap.

  • You've gotten bigger.

  • His dream... Whenever he had to write down what he wanted to

  • be, it was always to be a pro-gamer.

  • I just couldn't understand what this pro-gaming thing was.

  • I always enjoyed playing video games as a child.

  • And one day I saw a professional gaming tournament on television

  • and I thought to myself this is what I want to do.

  • Until he went to high school, I think I threw away

  • a handful of computers.

  • I thought maybe if I threw them away he wouldn't play.

  • If we didn't have a computer,

  • Piglet would go out to the smoke-filled PC Bangs to play games there

  • and, well, I'm not sure how long he can keep doing this,

  • but this is his dream.

  • Our home life wasn't... we weren't happy.

  • We were also struggling financially.

  • I would come home way past midnight, even though I was only in high school.

  • We would sometimes play non-stop without eating and sleep in late to miss meals.

  • My older brother did a lot of bad things,

  • so he would say things like there should at least be one good guy in the house.

  • The good thing about playing games professionally

  • is that people recognize me and I feel somewhat famous.

  • Hello, this is SKT T1's Unit 1!

  • Unit 2!

  • Unit 3!

  • Unit 4!

  • Unit 5!

  • In our country (Korea)

  • I think it's a given that you have to give up everything else

  • when you decide to become a pro-gamer.

  • I think the mental stress

  • is the worst part about being a professional gamer.

  • I was never this skinny before, but ever since I started playing professionally

  • I've lost over 10 kg (22 lbs).

  • Yeah, it's kind of unfortunate.

  • We are more or less the hope of North America apparently,

  • so there is a lot of people jumping on our bandwagon

  • basically now, becoming our fans, because they

  • want North America to do well at Worlds, and they

  • think that we are their best hope to do that. We

  • are the underdogs at this tournament, actually,

  • relative to Europe, China, and Korea at least,

  • so we are seen as the weaker region. Going from

  • being no one and being a nothing team to making

  • it in was definitely the hardest part for us. My

  • favorite moment was probably when we qualified

  • for LCS, because it was the second time we tried.

  • The first time we failed pretty horribly and that

  • was really depressing, so we came into it again

  • with a better mindset and we made it that time.

  • Ever since then we weren't really known for anything

  • until we came into this split, which is the summer

  • split of 2013. We took first place in it. It was

  • just basically getting more popular, and more popular, our numbers

  • on social media sites had just gone

  • up and up. We've been winning everything, we went

  • 25-3 and we won Regionals. We were like, destroying

  • the whole scene. It feels weird, but cool at the

  • same time to have fans. Since we first entered

  • the LCS, everyone has always had high expectations

  • for us, no matter what. I definitely never thought

  • that I was going to be a professional gamer when

  • I was younger, and since I started playing League

  • of Legends professionally I never thought I would

  • be playing at Worlds for North America. I don't

  • think Europe is much better than us, I don't think

  • China is much better than us, but I do think the

  • Koreans are better. They just breed talent over

  • there, because that's what they've been doing for

  • the past ten years, whereas most of the people

  • in North America haven't been able to do that.

  • Playing against SKT would be really sweet, because

  • I would get to play against Faker, but I would

  • prefer to have easier routes to the Finals if that's

  • possible. It would be great if my team won Worlds.

  • Like if a North American team just wins and, like,

  • no one can bash North America anymore, so that

  • would be like... that would be amazing.

  • My family was ordinary, neither rich nor poor.

  • My parents were migrant workers outside my hometown.

  • I was raised by my grandparents.

  • I was a bad student in school. I just didn't like to study.

  • At that time I was so little that I didn't know much, but I felt something missing.

  • I felt happier and didn't worry so much once I started playing games.

  • He'd only go to school when someone took him there.

  • If no one took him to school, he would skip it.

  • I would tell him not to play. He would say I won't

  • go to the cafe, I'll go to school.

  • Even if you hit him and yell at him, he'll say ok.

  • But after two days, it's useless.

  • The Internet cafe owner would say, he doesn't need much money,

  • with one yuan he plays the whole morning or afternoon.

  • My parents saw me playing games everyday, they started to ask me questions

  • like who did I want to be? What did I want to do when I grew up?

  • Everyday you're out playing, sleeping, eating all at the Internet cafe. That's not acceptable.

  • They sent me to a boarding school and I barely came home.

  • I learned to climb over the school walls to the Internet cafes,

  • but I was often caught.

  • I could never forget,

  • one time I ran away from school.

  • My dad found out and very seriously told me not to return home - ever.

  • I felt the dearest person in the world to me...

  • wanted to abandon me.

  • I really felt my life was nothing but misery.

  • Sometimes I wondered: why was I born into this world?

  • A professional team invited me to join them,

  • because I was known to be an outstanding gamer.

  • My attitude towards life was reversed suddenly.

  • I realized life was good.

  • Come eat!

  • I didn't want him to leave, I told him it's very chaotic outside.

  • You don't understand it, you're too naive. I felt protective of him.

  • Before I wanted him to just work in our business.

  • He told me he doesn't want to do it.

  • He said he could play this game and compete internationally.

  • I didn't believe him. How could there be such things?

  • May 9. 2012 he left home.

  • I was so sad.

  • He said I have to go. I want to go to America to compete.

  • I told him you must be dreaming, going to America to compete.

  • He said it's true, there's prize money too.

  • I told him stop dreaming.

  • Now we're fully supportive of him.

  • We cheer him on, and wish him to be a star.

  • I do have the fortunate

  • pleasure of knowing all the big names in League

  • of Legends Esports and it's been really cool to

  • watch them grow. These are gamers who love playing

  • games and really do what they do primarily for

  • passion. They feel like they are living the dream,

  • because they are living the dream.

  • I see a future for my son.

  • I tell him, there's the next one, S3 Worlds in America, you need to push hard.

  • He said, I'm not afraid. I will try hard. I won't fail.

  • I felt very proud of my son.

  • Once you start killing some minions, once you start

  • trading with your enemy laner, you kind of forget

  • about the fact that you are in front of so many people.

  • If we can understand what the other regions

  • are doing just so we understand their meta, their

  • Champion picks and their banning and drafting

  • phase and instead of doing the same things we are

  • doing better things, then I think we have a good

  • chance of doing well at Worlds.

  • We just talk to each other before the game starts, we will start

  • singing random songs, try our best to laugh and

  • calm each other's nerves. I want to win and I hope

  • we can win and I think we can. For the first Quarter

  • Final of the World Championship is going to be

  • Cloud9 up against Fnatic. Now Cloud9 is the first

  • seed coming out of America and Fnatic is the first

  • seed coming out of Europe. Fnatic swept the group

  • stage, it's the first time we are going to see

  • Cloud 9 on the stage. It's also a huge battle between

  • North America and Europe. A lot of people kind

  • of feel that this will establish who is the stronger

  • region. Cloud9 splitting up once again, this is

  • not a base race. They're not done here, because

  • they still see two members backing off of the top

  • lane, they could go straight for the inhibitor

  • turret. They will, they are going to go right for

  • this. There is still an Ashe and a Sona in the

  • lane, they just got back to base, but the turret

  • goes down, now Cloud9 engages. They go for Peke

  • and he not really the right target, because the

  • Stranglethorn is going to bounce Meteos. That's

  • going to be Hai going down. Massive kill for Fnatic

  • here. See Sneaky, he's going to get dropped as

  • well. Crescendo simply saves their lives and takes

  • Cyanide down while four members of Fnatic are still

  • alive at the base and three members of Cloud9

  • are already dead. Cloud9 was so indecisive...

  • Fnatic had just swept the first game, it was close,

  • but at the end they were very convincing in closing

  • it out. Cloud9 really had some thinking to do

  • when they first picked Fizz and xPeke counter-picked

  • with Twisted Fate. Didn't turn out very well, I

  • kind of wonder if they feel bad about that pick.

  • But it is going to be Hai going aggressive. Urchin

  • Strike is available on Peke, you can see he has

  • already used that ignite it's going to take an

  • ability though. Got him! First blood. Yes! Oh he

  • got Peke! Cloud 9 will close this game out shortly,

  • there is nothing Fnatic can do. We are going to

  • game three ladies and gentlemen. North America

  • Strikes back. So Cloud9 takes the second game

  • and we are on to game three. It's going to be an

  • even trade in turrets but Fnatic keep going on

  • the inner here. Fnatic has endless aggression it

  • is consistently catching Cloud9 off guard. Fnatic

  • is everywhere. Fnatic only invades red... only

  • when they are on red side. The ultimate comes up,

  • Yellowstar catches them all down... Peke's full.

  • Peke comes back in there he gets LemonNation...

  • Peke goes around, he gets himself a triple and

  • Fnatic keep driving on home the victory. 21 kills

  • to 1 right now, Fnatic continuing this push with

  • inhibitor number two and maybe the game... We lost

  • very badly. I think we got maybe one kill in that

  • entire game. We got a kill? We got like 2? We got

  • two kills, good. We were ill prepared. We weren't

  • ready for everything that they did. In the end

  • it was our fault.

  • Come out here to watch us get destroyed. Did you hear the chants of Cloud9?

  • Yes. For me, losing sucks, not just because I didn't

  • win, but because the way we lost was kind of sad.

  • And while I'm not a sore loser or I get very upset

  • from losing, it's just not that great compared

  • to winning. I'm rooting for the team that beat

  • us so we can say we lost to the Champions.

  • Two very big rivals coming out of China and we

  • are going to find out who is better. China's number

  • one seed Royal Club versus the second seed from

  • China, OMG. 63% of you believe it's going to be OMG.

  • When playing, my greatest fear is probably being indecisive.

  • Being overconfident, or intimidated.

  • Considering the opponent very strong and losing myself.

  • Due to the immense pressure, it is a daily occurrence to lose yourself.

  • And I think a lot

  • of the importance of Renekton in these interactions

  • is... actually they are going right in. They are

  • going straight in and onto Tabe he is going to

  • have to flash, puts down the stone as well. Lovelin

  • flashes in now, he is going to get Tabe very low,

  • finishes off there... Now this is very interesting.

  • OMG is sacrificing turret pressure for farm on

  • Jax. Gogoing has been freezing the bottom lane

  • for the past minute or so while Royal is mercilessly

  • pushing this middle lane. Here comes GoGoing, there's

  • another kill, the double coming down for Cool.

  • It's not over yet either as Lovelin picks one up.

  • He is being a massive factor in these team fights

  • as Royal just brute forces their way in as OMG

  • is completely contained within their base. This

  • could be an attempt to end by Royal. There it is

  • a flash Tibbers coming in not really doing what

  • they would have hoped from it and Royal back away

  • to the steps. There is the Strangelthorns going

  • down as Wh1t3zZ gets into the base, there is the

  • Ace in the Hole Uzi going to pick that one up,

  • that's already one man down, can they finish the

  • tower? This is bad news. This is going to be game

  • number 1 going over to Royal Club.

  • When I started to play games, my parents were seldom by my side.

  • They hardly cared for me then.

  • They worried I'd get cheated and didn't trust this career.

  • We watch every one of his games, over and over again.

  • We don't even watch TV, we only watch his games.

  • Down goes GoGoing, he is getting obliterated,

  • there is a crescendo coming in as well, Tabe picks

  • up a kill, but they are only going one way right

  • now... Lovelin, can he get away from this one,

  • Tumble comes down and that's a triple kill for

  • the Vayne. Wow, 5 for 0. a clean ace, even though

  • that initiation seemed forced by Royal, that's

  • how confident they are. Uzi is coming in from the

  • backside, surprise, here comes a Vayne, kill for

  • Wh1t3zZ. San's not going to escapes this one, they

  • focus down Uzi. Look at him, he is still alive,

  • he is still surviving, he stays alive! Ace for

  • Royal Club, what an amazing fight. Oh my god, right

  • there Royal just aced OMG, they beat them four

  • times in a row, they are going for five. They have

  • Minions in the mid lane, Super Minions in fact.

  • They are going for the win. This is going to be

  • a win for Royal Club, they are going to take down

  • their Chinese rivals 2 to 0. Yeah!

  • We don't want to be tourists, you know. We don't want to come

  • to LA for the first round to play the game and

  • just go back. Goodbye. I love every team in this

  • S3 Tournament, because I always thought Koreans

  • are the best and the second place is China, but

  • to be honest I think every team in the world is super strong.

  • I think S3 was half success, half failure.

  • During the second game, we were maybe a bit rattled,

  • and did not calm down. Our minds were messy.

  • Once were in that important moment,

  • we lacked a little experience.

  • And we did not play to our normal level.

  • I also made some mistakes as a leader. I was not decisive.

  • How do you feel about the sand?

  • Not sure. Pretty nice...

  • I think that failure makes us face ourselves.

  • The greatest achievement is these experiences.

  • I think I made a lot of progress.

  • In order to be happy all the time

  • I would have to win all the time. There's no other way.

  • In the top part of the bracket it is the number

  • one seed from the Southeast Asia and Taiwan region,

  • the Gama Bears. They will be taking on Korea's

  • SK Telecom T1.

  • Even if our team wins the game,

  • I don't feel like a winner if the other bot lane played better.

  • Now NL, way out of position, that's

  • the third kill of the fight for little Piglet,

  • now dead to rights, now Steak will be the next

  • one to fall. Who gets the kill credit? It's Faker.

  • SK Telecom T1 will advance to face Najin Black

  • Sword in the semifinals.

  • When the League of Legends Championship started

  • there were kids who showed up wearing Pooh and Piglet ears.

  • That's when I thought, Oh wow. Is Piglet that well known in another country?

  • Yeah, right. No way!

  • But when Piglet gives me a little allowance here and there

  • that's when I realize.

  • Come on please show it to us.

  • So coming into this, SK Telecom versus Najin Sword,

  • a lot of people thought that SK Telecom was the

  • big favorite.

  • NBS Coach: It's best 3 out of 5. and it would feel good to win 3 to 0.

  • but obviously, SK isn't going to be that easy.

  • He kept going back to the Nexus to buy items.

  • We just need to keep pressuring them.

  • SKT Coach: Why were you intercepted so much?

  • Why did you die so many times when you didn't have to?

  • Poohmandu: Well we didn't have vision...

  • Coach: It wasn't just one or two times. It was way too many.

  • In the blind state you were fighting minions one by one.

  • So it could only be a 4v5 at that point.

  • What's the point of Shen's strength?

  • You couldn't do anything but even if you died you have to go in. That way you could get vision.

  • It's a momentum battle. We've given over the momentum a little bit.

  • You're trying to do exactly what you practiced, and it's too rigid.

  • A lot of people thought that it would just go on

  • and on that momentum and take the entire series,

  • but Najin Sword fought back, Najin Sword only needs

  • one more victory, it would be an incredible upset.

  • Shen is not so good during team fights so he's risky.

  • Expession: I can get Shen! I can get Shen!

  • Nagne: We could possibly finish the game here.

  • Expession: He doesn't have a way out! Kill him!

  • Impact: Attack.

  • NBS Coach: It's okay. We got sucked into their pace.

  • They had Vayne and Thresh, so we're not able to push them in the lane.

  • Cain: We can't?

  • Expession: It's difficult when they have Thresh.

  • Coach: Just go in with the thought that we're starting from scratch.

  • This is a team game so if one person messes up you can cover.

  • You guys can't lose. Let's do a final fighting!

  • Fighting!

  • Impact: We have to push together. This is the victory,

  • this is the finals for SK Telecom T1. They will

  • be representing Korea at the Staples Center in

  • the World Final..

  • We're in the finals!

  • Piglet: I thought we were going to lose.

  • My teammates are so good.

  • Bengi: [shaking with fear]

  • Piglet: I feel like throwing up.

  • Bengi: You can throw up.

  • Impact: Go ahead and throw up.

  • Interviewer: Please give a round of applause to SKT T1

  • who have advanced to the finals in the Season 3 World Championship Finals.

  • Fnatic and Royal Club take to the Rift to decide

  • who will be facing off against SKT for the Season

  • 3 World Championship. Fnatic's mid player, xPeke,

  • is very, very good. I think he is really, really

  • good, but I am very confident that Wh1t3zZ can

  • beat him in mid lane.

  • ...Cyanide and sOAZ to do what they can. In a last

  • ditch effort they fly onto Wh1t3zZ, they take down

  • Wh1t3zZ, if they can get Uzi they may get the damage

  • out with the DPS is still there D-man, they're

  • moving on to the Nexus. That was the big if and

  • they could not do it. Uzi is alive, Uzi is doing

  • damage. It's Royal Club going through to the Grand Finals.

  • SKT is a really great team. Piglet, one of the

  • best AD's in team fights. I only know that we are

  • facing a huge, huge, huge, huge enemy.

  • I always try to imagine how the stage is going to be.

  • I heard that only real famous people

  • are allowed to perform in the Staples Center.

  • If we were to go, I would feel just as famous.

  • Now I'm happy to get you guys clapping, but I'm

  • not sure you're loud enough for this one.

  • My mom used to be my biggest opposition,

  • but now she is my biggest fan.

  • I found that I can't really control how people love me.

  • I don't want to disappoint my family.

  • Especially her.

  • Four, three, two, one! League of Legends! SK Telecom

  • T1. versus, Royal Club.

  • It is time for the players to take to the Rift

  • for round 1 of tonight's World Final. And while

  • many picked SKT as the pre-tournament favorite

  • to be in tonight's Final, Royal Club has taken

  • out two heavily favored teams to make it here,

  • to the Staples Center, and impress their experts

  • along the way. They're the best team in China with

  • the chance of becoming the best team in the world.

  • This is where it gets interesting, Faker is absolutely

  • level 6 and Bengi is going to try to combo with

  • a gank. He goes in, does he manage to knock him

  • up? Yes he does! The Shockwave comes in, but it

  • does not matter, First Blood Faker! Just execution

  • right down the middle... But immediately he is

  • going to go down. And now Uzi is in trouble, he

  • cannot get one kill, no! He can't... They do come

  • in with the Crescendo, but they haven't got him

  • down yet! He's going to run away from this one,

  • will Wh1t3zZ get caught out? They are just dropping

  • like flies. Game 1 of the World Finals going to

  • SK Telecom T1. Full control for the Korean team.

  • Coach: Okay let's just move one. There were obvious mistakes,

  • bad positioning for some. There's no reason to pick it apart since we won.

  • The most important thing here is first pick is Jax.

  • Jax or Orianna.

  • Impact: Jax.

  • Piglet: Well if they pick Orianna it has to be Jax.

  • Coach: Yeah, they might also ban it.

  • Our strategy and champion choices are very problematic.

  • Our advantage lies in the 5 to 4. but we weren't able to play it even once.

  • You always think they're too strong, but it's our own playing that has problems.

  • We had so many Champions who could initiate a fight but you guys chickened out.

  • This time around Uzi getting focused on, Mandu

  • going to lock him up. Barrier being burned there,

  • but now he is putting pressure back on Mandu. Piglet

  • goes aggressive, a little too close on that turret,

  • but fortunately for Tabe... Oh! The snipe from

  • Piglet. Can they chase down Faker? Wh1t3zZ is going

  • to try to cut him off with a Riftwalk, Faker realizes

  • it... Barrier is available though, who will get

  • the kill? It's going to be Wh1t3zZ, Faker is going

  • to try to finish it off, but that is a lot of kills

  • for Wh1t3zZ... Piglet is there, Tabe's in trouble.

  • He is going to go down, Piglet is taking down the

  • turret, and look at... look he's just in all sorts

  • of trouble, he is like What do I do? What do I do?

  • They get a triple kill. It's a big one. And Piglet

  • is playing out of his mind this game... On the

  • red carpet, but they are all off of it already,

  • they've entered into the fight. Royal's health

  • bars are just getting demolished. Uzi on the outside

  • trying to do what he can, but it's not going to

  • be enough. Uzi is chased into the base and SKT

  • wipes up the base with the Quadra...

  • I think it's remarkable validator for the players

  • to see so many faces hanging on every thread of

  • these games that they participate in. It's really

  • a mental game. They are right in front of us, but

  • we are really watching their achievements through

  • their avatar. It's just fascinating to see.

  • ...It's one of those situations where there's people

  • waiting from SKT to rush and they killed Wh1t3zZ,

  • so I think that was a smart call for them. With

  • that pressure in the top, Tabe getting caught out,

  • but the team as their Impact trying to go very

  • deep. A very nice hit up on Godlike, he is forced

  • to flash in and they can't get the damage down.

  • Impact is somehow still running around alive...

  • And Wh1t3zZ goes in, while Caitlyn's not there!

  • They pull trickster up and down, the Crescendo

  • does stop the re-initiation, and Piglet, nobody

  • is touching Piglet, they are all running away.

  • Faker makes the fight continue, puts Godlike in

  • the fray and they are going to take down the turret.

  • Oh my god. Piglet is an assassin. SK Telecom are

  • just rolling through. The Nexus turrets are potentially

  • going to go down. This could be a 20-minute game

  • for SKT, they will be the Season 3 World Champions,

  • here at the Staples Center.

  • ...Started this best of five with a win, after

  • that there was no stopping the Korean power house.

  • SKT Telecom come into this game saying You know,

  • the Champions Cups would be lonely at home if we

  • didn't bring back another one.

  • So they find a Summoner's Cup and it will get placed

  • at the SKT house right next to their win from Korea.

  • Ladies and gentlemen the hype train is real.

  • How did it feel to lose? How did you lose?

  • We didn't do enough homework. I don't think we were lacking any skills.

  • Don't kid yourself. We lost on skills too. 3 to 0.

  • No team in the world will be able to beat SKT.

  • Koreans are truly unbeatable in this game.

  • Probably in many people's eyes they easily took

  • $1 million, but they've put in a lot of hard work.

  • They deserve it.

  • This is your last game?

  • Yes.

  • Piglet: This is ours now!

  • Those words: World Champions.

  • It felt unreal.

  • It's only been a year and a half that I have been a pro-gamer.

  • I think I'm at the beginning.

  • Coach: 1-2-3.

  • Everyone: T1 T1 Fighting!

  • Winning the championship is a kind of affirmation to ourselves.

  • I desperately want to win the S4 championship together with my team.

  • Five people, side by side.

  • The major motivation is the bond between players.

  • Which means treasuring each other truly.
