  • They are all academy of fine arts

  • public academy

  • but I got the permit of the academy in Toulouse first

  • and then Marseille

  • I applied for five and got two permits

  • You all applied for the same major?

  • This system doesn't seperate the majors

  • You passed the entrance exam

  • then select courses in 2nd grade

  • We study the general courses in 1st grade

  • Some academy

  • they have design major

  • or fine arts

  • only seperate out at 2nd grade

  • Have you already selected it?

  • Yes

  • In our school, there are design and fine arts majors

  • So you're in...

  • I'm now in fine arts

  • But in our major, they have options for the workshop

  • I'm in photography and installation art workshops

  • Photography and installation art

  • It means you have to work outside of the school?

  • For me,the school is only provide a place to study

  • where you have chances to exchange the notions with the profs

  • For your own art work

  • Whatever you do

  • they won't interfer you

  • they provide some materials and resources

  • you finished your work and discuss with your prof

  • so you're doing projects

  • in the workshops you mentioned?

  • Right

  • You have to work on a project in the workshop

  • and do it your own

  • You have complete freedom on the project

  • You can do whatever you want

  • same as your own creation

  • The prof won't interfer too much

  • The pricnipal is

  • propose your ideas

  • profs will give some advices

  • You can take them as references

  • During the process,

  • you can discuss with them and come out with new stuffs

  • You asked strangers on the road to shoot them

  • Yes in London

  • There're some people get pissed off?

  • That was in London

  • and I popped up with an idea

  • I felt London is a difference place

  • compare in France

  • Maybe tha's because I live in southern france

  • French are more warmth

  • London is a big city

  • People are more indifferent

  • They don't pay much attention on politeness

  • The day after my arrival is Xmas

  • so I have an idea to say I LOVE U

  • to show my warmth

  • I walk along the street

  • They don't have trasportation on Xmas

  • I went to a party of a friend

  • I have to walk about 2hrs

  • so I said I LOVE U to everyone on the street

  • While I'm talking,I took a pic of them too

  • in a close distance,about 1m

  • some people were nice

  • It won't cause a problem to them

  • some get angry

  • 'Cause you didn't ask for their permission

  • Did someone wanna punch you?

  • Not really,but angry indeed

  • They didn't ask you to take out the roll?

  • I don't care,I left right away after shooting

  • Actually after I said Merry Xmas

  • I left immediately

  • some people will not be happy

  • if you take the photo then say (Merry Xmas)

  • They won't feel offended 'cause of Xmas

  • Westerners will be gentle (in Xmas)

  • How do you think about the photos after developing

  • I used an instamatic

  • I couldn't use a expensive one

  • Afraid of being smashed

  • That instamatic costs 10 pounds for one time

  • The definition is alright

  • Street snap doesn't concern about the definition

  • Anyway,it's fine

  • It captured the emotion I want

  • like astonishing

  • Some pics were taken at night

  • I walked along from afternoon to night

  • I used flash too

  • It catched some surprised facial expression

  • Not bad

  • How long have you been a photophile

  • one yr,two yrs?

  • Basically I use negatives

  • if we calculate from the time I use negatives

  • It's about 1 and half yr

  • 1 and half

  • And you started to work on projects while you used negatives

  • Well for projects

  • it's a blurred line

  • In the beginning,I was messing around

  • It's about...

  • If we talk about the projects

  • maybe less than 1 yr

  • After (I used negatives for) 8 months

  • I started to have a concept about a series of projects

  • And for the first one?

  • The first one is still ongoing

  • still trying sth new

  • it's about portraits

  • Portraits on the street

  • I'm into street snap

  • and in the same time

  • I observe people in this process

  • for exemple,some clerks

  • or normal people

  • I'm interested in their outfits or anything elses

  • I will ask them (to do the photoshoot)

  • and write down their contacts

  • or send them the photos

  • sth like this

  • But your street snap is not like

  • I got a friend who is doing the street fashion snaps

  • with stylish people

  • but you are not

  • My street snap have a theme

  • Les gens moyennes

  • (it means)normal people

  • I'm not shooting the poors or riches

  • 'Cause mostly it's the normal people who are supporting the society

  • Middle level

  • I want to present a feeling of normal people

  • It's just a feeling when I walk by them

  • or I sense sth which attract me to take the pics

  • You don't have to be stylish

  • or weird or sth elses

  • I depend on feelings or facial expression

  • I don't have a fix form,just to feel

  • You are not the one who are into wacks

  • instead the reality of daily life

  • My photos are like a dairy

  • Yours?

  • kind of

  • my own database

  • where I went to etc.

  • I'm lazy in writing

  • so photography is another expression of mine

  • not only use the negatives

  • I use my mobile a lot to record things

  • For your projects, mostly they don't district in a region?

  • You have a theme so wherever you go you shoot

  • Yes

  • Start from your first project

  • to the one you told me about the immigrants

  • It's the third or fifth?

  • Actually all of my projects are still ongoing

  • They only have the starts

  • but when will they end

  • I can't give you the answer,'cause it's continued

  • I'm doing them in the same time

  • I shoot the portraits continually

  • even I'm in Paris now,I continue

  • The immigrants one is just started

  • since the week before last week

  • What are the themes you have worked on?

  • which is interesting

  • My stuff is generally in experimental exploring

  • one of my project is human's back

  • from my classmates or students

  • They are not mature works

  • I'm still trying to break through this year

  • And for the immigrants

  • 'Cause my best foreign friend in France is a turk

  • he treats me like his bro

  • Through his relations,we go out

  • and I also lived with him for a long time

  • We pray together

  • so I can understand a bit of his culture

  • And knowing some turks from him

  • or turkish immigrants born in France

  • I'm interested in their culture

  • so I began with turks

  • to make this project

  • Many photographers have the same theme in their time

  • In our time, there are more 2nd generation of immigrants

  • so that will be an issue for now

  • We're in a global village

  • the marriage (of different countries) or elses are nomal

  • The issue of 2nd or 3rd generation of the immigrants is important

  • so I want to discuss some problems in this project

  • through photography

  • For the answers,I won't tell

  • people can have explanations in the photos

  • I concern about how to present

  • the difference of culture/nation in a foreignland

  • or their 2nd generation born in another country

  • how to merge or exchange their culture and life style

  • In this project, you will focus on the turks

  • you won't explore the others?

  • Mainly turks now,'cause I got relations there

  • What I wanna do is

  • the observation between people from two different country as an outsider

  • For me,turkey is a different country

  • France is also different

  • I'm wondering how these two merge together

  • If I work on Taiwanese

  • then I'm not an outsider

  • I will block my vision without notice

  • so if I stand in a position of third party

  • I may easily find out sth they didn't notice before

  • It will be a better explanation for me

  • The audiences are also outsiders

  • Another perspective

  • Maybe this issue could be eaiser to express through photography

  • Not only the eastern element

  • The westerners might be interested in it

  • but too many people work on these

  • It just a...

  • Ok,What is eastern elements

  • It's hard to define

  • only if you show your own culture

  • maybe not culture,it's yourself

  • Human are the same

  • but everyone got different experiences

  • It's your own elements

  • only if you show this in your works

  • you will success once they accept this

  • to show a real status

  • to show yourself

  • but in the same time,it has to be interesting

  • it has some topics

  • Recent yrs in France

  • when I started to work on photography

  • Taiwan also has the trend of negatives

  • Many people into it

  • including China

  • The new generation of photographer

  • including Kechun Zhang

  • who won the discovery award of Arles this year

  • He also used negatives

  • Many photographers use negatives now

  • The mainly reason to use negatives is

  • in the very beginning of my digital experience

  • The camera on mobile is not very good

  • The definition is low

  • Photography is still a professional stuff for me

  • I could take pics which are very different to public with SLR

  • But now,the mobile can even achieve the level of SLR

  • It can be compared to digital camera

  • so it's important to find out the joy of photography

  • or we can just use the mobiles

  • I found negatives bring more photographic joy

  • or to express the meaning of photography

  • I found this out through negatives

  • When I'm doing the developping or press the button

  • It's a joy and also my expression of photography

  • My collection

  • I don't feel like a collector

  • Mostly of my collection is for pratical use

  • I treat myself as photophile not a photographer

  • 'Cause I still have equipement enthusiasm

  • like many photophiles do

  • In the beginning,I used a camera from east germany which is not so good

  • I wanna change for a better one when working for a while

  • It's nice to have many flea markets in france

  • or photographic exhibitions you can find some cameras there

  • a cheap price with a nice camera

  • I buy sth good but actually I don't mind

  • if it has to be a good equipement

  • You can find the one you like

  • Find a camera which fits you after used many

  • For photo shooting, comfortable for you is all mattered

  • You don't have to own sth expensive

  • You use 120 and 135?

  • 120 is more expensive

  • Only 12 negatives in a roll

  • For portraits,I use 120

  • Street snap,I use 135 for easily capture

  • You use flash or other equipement?

  • I don't really use flash and only use one lens

  • with 135,I have 40mm lens

  • That lens is cheap

  • 'Cause mine is LEICA

  • I got a M6 and M3

  • M6 is great with photometry

  • I'm just begnning to use M3

  • try not to use the photometry

  • use my eye to mesure the light

  • try to expose in my own observation

  • I only have one lens right now

  • Two cameras can use it

  • so the lens of vintage camera can be used in common?

  • Yes if you bought in the same mark

  • depend on the types

  • The reason why I use RF

  • Photophiles knows RF is better for street snaps

  • 'Cause I got shortsightedness but don't like to wear glasses

  • It's hard for me to focusing

  • For the focus of RF,just overlapping two shadows together

  • It's better for me to focusing

  • It has a skill of hyperfocal

  • You can manipulate the focus first

  • and just to catch a distance and shoot

  • so it's nice in street snaps

  • I won't do retouching on most of my pics

  • I will clean the dust on the negatives before scanning

  • I don't care even the dust has been scanned into the pics

  • I'll try not to use retouching

  • I don't like it

  • but many people use retouching now?

  • I have no objection on retouching

  • it depends

  • if you wanna present a photo prefectly

  • the retouching might be important

  • like the color tone in stuff

  • indeed it's necessary

  • But I want my pics present their original

  • Why I use negatives

  • and why I don't like retouching

  • only through negatives developping ,you can see how exposure principle works in photography

  • If you do retouching, that's like a digital pic for me

  • so I try to show the original of negatives

  • In competition, there are some people will use this?

  • They won't district on retouching in France

  • Maybe some of the competition will

  • but for those I knew,they won't

  • Developping is a process

  • After shooting, the photography is not ended

  • Retouching,no,developping

  • This kind of process and you print out

  • They are all in photography

  • Only if you print out your negatives,it's the end

  • If sth wrong in the process, the whole pic is ruined

  • That's a joy for me to get through the process of negative developping

  • Did you try any effect when developping or just normal print out?

  • I use normal way

  • I don't like the effects either

  • I tried to add some effect of bubbles before

  • I'm not into it after I've tried

  • Maybe in the future I will try again

  • but now,I just shoot and print out

  • more traditional

  • You can accept on the spend of the negatives in France?

  • so far so good

  • so you'll work on this budget continually

  • I didn't spend too much actually

  • It depends if I go out or not

  • If I travel for a long time,it might spend a little on photo shooting

  • Basically I'm in Marseille to live

  • not whole time for my works

  • Not too much

  • In school

  • they have developping water for BW

  • I'm ok with the spend of negatives

  • but it will be a problem if I leave my school

  • I might keep some camera of mine to shoot BW

  • I'll do the developping myself

  • The color pics will stop probably

  • I spend my 70% time of photography

  • 30% on installation art

  • I wanna try installation art

  • I don't wanna learn photography at first

  • yet still got interest

  • so I chose the workshop of photography

  • Installation art is a new stuff for me ,still have to keep working

They are all academy of fine arts
