I also did a short exchange for 2 weeks when I was in high school

私も、2週間だけですが高校生の時に、 交換留学に来たことがあります。

Do you have to know Japanese really well to go on an exchange?

交換留学するには、 日本語をしっかり勉強したほうが良いですか？

Well I did an exam before I came

う〜ん、私は日本へ来る前に試験がありました。

So they said you have to learn it for at least 2 years for my school

なので、最低2年間は自分の学校で 日本語を勉強する必要がありました。

And even when I came it was still quite hard

私の時は、試験がとても難しかったです。

And I studied for 2 years so it's probably better to be at least intermediate level

2年間勉強して、最低でも中級レベルになっている必要があると思います。

So they had an exam and you had to be able to pass a certain level to qualify?

つまり、試験で一定のレベルに達しているか、 調べたってことね？

Yep

うん、そうそう。

For me, I was only here on a 2 week exchange

私は2週間だけ交換留学に来たから、

and there were no requirements whatsoever

特に要件はなかったわ。

I actually spoke zero Japanese, I knew like 3 words

実は、日本語が全然できなくて、 単語も3つだけしか知らなかったの。

But I found that really fun? It was fun.

でも、本当に楽しかったよ。

Because everything was new to me, I picked up lots of Japanese while I was here

全てが新しかったからね。 日本にいる間に、たくさんの日本語を吸収しました。

So if you're just going on a short exchange and they don't require a certain level of Japanese

短期留学に来るだけなら、 要件はないと思う。

Don't worry at all if you don't speak Japanese

日本語ができなくても、全然大丈夫。

I thought it made the experience more exciting

日本語ができないことで、むしろよりワクワクする経験ができたと思う。

But in their case they're here for a year and they required it, so

でも彼女たちは一年間の留学だから、試験が必要だったのかな。

It looks like every case is different, but you may be all right not knowing Japanese

だから場合によって違う。日本語ができなくても大丈夫な場合もある。

So check with your school

自分の学校はどうなのか、調べてみて。

Are exchange students expected to learn the same curriculum as Japanese students?

交換留学生は、日本人の学生と同じカリキュラムで学ばないといけないの？

I'm on a slightly different program to Emily

私のプログラムはエミリーのと少し違うんだよね。

Because I'm a proper foreign exchange student, I have tests but they're in English

私は正式な海外からの交換留学生だから、テストは英語で受ける。

So they're aimed at someone who's not native in Japanese

日本語が母語じゃない人向けのテストね。

Whereas Emily's are pretty much the same

でもエミリーは、日本人とほとんど同じ。

Yeah the same I think

うん、そう思う。

Oh really, you're taking the same ones as the Japanese students?

そうなんだ。日本人の学生と同じテストを受けるってこと？

Are the teachers kind of slack?

先生はちょっと大目に見てくれたりする？

If you don't get a score as high as all the Japanese students, they're okay with it?

日本人の学生よりテストの点が低くても大丈夫？

They're okay with it

大丈夫だよ。

They don't expect you to be perfect

先生は、私たちが完璧にこなせることは期待してない。

We have teachers that will write the furigana on kanji for us

私たちのためにふりがなをつけてくれる先生もいる。

Because he knows we can't read it

漢字が読めないのをわかってるから。

Aw that's nice

優しい先生だね。

Again, it looks like it's different for everyone and you'll probably have choices about what you wanna do

これも人によって違うし、どうしたいか選べることもあるかも。

When I was here I didn't do any tests

私の場合、テストは受けなかった。

I did some schoolwork in class and they gave me some homework

授業中に課題をこなすだけ。宿題もあったけど。

But it was just a really short program

すごく短いプログラムだったからね。

How much did it cost? Did your school pay for it?

お金はどれくらいかかる？ 学校が代わりに負担してくれた？

I had to pay all of it because I'm like a normal student

私は全額負担した。普通の生徒と一緒の扱いだから。

And private school here in Japan is pretty expensive

それと、日本の私立高校はすごく高い。

Pretty expensive

すごく高いね。

Our school is the most expensive in Tokyo

私たちが行ってる学校は、東京で一番高いの。

Does the price differ for foreign students?

海外の学生は値段が違う？

Do you pay a different price than Japanese students do?

日本の学生とは違う金額を払ってる？

I didn't

私は同じ。

I think mine cost a bit more because I had to do homestay

私はより高いお金を払ってるかな、ホームステイしなきゃいけないから。

Right, so it includes the homestay cost

ホームステイの分のお金が含まれるのね。

It's pretty expensive

それがすごく高い。

And you have to pay for your uniform, and a fee to get into the school

あと制服を買わなきゃいけないし、入学金もある。

Because I don't take tests, so I have to pay to get in

入試を受けなかったから、その分の入学金が必要なの。

And textbooks, they never give you the textbooks

それから教科書。教科書はタダでくれるわけじゃない。

As a student, are you allowed to work part time?

アルバイトはしてもいいの？

If you wanted to get a job here?

働きたかったら働ける？

Secretly...

内緒でなら…

So you're not allowed?

許可は出ないの？

You could, but it's gonna be like a whole big meeting

出るかもしれないけど、大掛かりな話し合いをすることになる。

Ahh to discuss if it's okay to do it or not

バイトしていいかどうか話し合うのね。

So it's possible, but a pain in the ass

だから可能だけど、面倒くさいわけだ。

They say sometimes for foreign students they can make exceptions

外国人には、例外にすることもできるって言ってくれることもある。

because you might have run out of money, before you finish school

留学期間を終える前に、お金がなくなっちゃうかもしれないし。

So in that case it's ok

そういう場合はokなんだ。

It also depends on your visa

ビザにもよるかな。

Yeah you have to apply for special permission

そう、特別な許可を申請しなきゃいけないんだよね。

So it looks like it's pretty pricey guys

というわけで、お金はかなりかかるみたい。

I've never heard of any year long exchange programs that are free

年単位の長いプログラムで、タダっていうのは聞いたことない。

If you're planning on doing one maybe get a part time job

もし交換留学するつもりなら、バイトした方がいいかも。

And start saving up now

いまのうちに貯金してね。

So you can help pay for it, maybe your parents will pay the rest

費用の足しになるように。残りは親が払ってくれるかも。

If you don't know Japanese can you still make Japanese friends?

日本語ができなくても、日本人の友達はできる？

Yes!

できるよ！

I think so

できると思う。

For me it was really easy to make friends

私はすぐに友達できたよ。

Everyone's interested in you because you're like the cool foreign person

みんな興味を持ってくれる。「クールな外国人」って扱われるから。

So everyone wants to talk to you I found

みんなあなたと話したがるよ。

Did you have the same experience?

There's lots of people interested in foreign music as well

外国の音楽に興味ある人がたくさんいる。

So they'll be the first to come up to you and be like "Do you know Beyonce?"

そういう子たちがまず来てくれて、「ビヨンセって知ってる？」みたいなw

Yeah yeah yeah

そうそう。

I don't think language is really a factor in making friends

友達づくりに、言語はあんまり関係ない。

You'll get around that

言葉の壁は乗り越えられる。

If you don't speak Japanese and you're trying to make Japanese friends

今日本語が喋れなくて、日本人の友達が欲しい人は、

It's a great incentive to learn Japanese

それが日本語を勉強する動機になるよ。

and I feel that that will really benefit your language study

こういう動機は、言語学習にすごく役立つと思う。

That's how I improved mine really fast

私の日本語の上達が早かったのも、それが要因。

Because I wanted to talk to these people but I couldn't

日本人と喋りたかったけど、喋れなくて、

So I would try to find phrases that I could use with them and study a bit

それで使えるフレーズを勉強したんだよね。

How did you hear about the program?

プログラムをどうやって見つけた？

I already graduated my school

私の場合、高校をすでに卒業してた。

So I finished school and then I decided to take a year off and go to Japan

高校を卒業してから、一年日本にいくことにしたの。

Because I wanted to get better at Japanese before university

大学に入る前に日本語を上達させたかったから。

Mine's not actually through my school

実際私のプログラムは、高校を通じたものじゃないんだよね。

When I was looking online, all the programs were for America and Canada

ネット上で探したんだけど、アメリカとカナダ向けのものばかりだった。

They didn't have anything for England

イギリス向けはなかったんだ。

Somehow I ended up on the Japanese embassy sites

なぜか日本大使館のサイトにたどりついて、

The New Zealand embassy or something

ニュージーランドかどこかの大使館だったかな、

And I found a link to the school

そこで、今行ってる学校のサイトへのリンクを見つけた。

So I actually applied to the school directly all by myself

だから私の場合、自分で日本の学校に直接応募したの。

Wow that's cool!

それはすごいね！

So if your school doesn't offer anything, you can just apply directly

だから、自分の高校にプログラムがなくても、直接応募できるんだ。

And she's not even a high school student, she graduated

彼女は、既に高校を卒業してたわけだし。

A couple of you guys were like "Aww I graduated high school... dammit..."

みんな「もう高校卒業しちゃった…くそっ…」とか思ってるかもしれないけど。

I think it was okay up until 20 years old

20歳くらいまでなら大丈夫だと思う。

Oh really? Cool

そうなんだ、いいね。

It doesn't matter about your age as much

多少年が上でも大丈夫。

I'm 18 but I'm in with the first years (Grade 10)

私は18歳だけど、高校一年だし。

They just put you in a class based on your level and where is most appropriate

レベルに合った学年に入れてくれるんだね。

I think many high school have them but they don't advertise them

交換留学制度のある高校はいっぱいあるけど、大々的に宣伝してるわけじゃない。

So if you're in high school at the moment

いま高校生の人は、

I would go talk to your counsellor or just go to the office if you have an international office

事務の人とかに相談してみて。

and ask them for opportunities for exchange

交換留学の機会があるか訊ねてみるの。

because you might have something and you just don't know about it

制度はあるけど自分が知らないだけかもしれないから。

And if your school doesn't have one, maybe look into the option like that

もしそういう制度がなかったら、

Maybe graduate first and then go there after

（彼女みたいに）卒業してから行く手もある。

There seem to be lots of different ways to do it

方法はいろいろあるよ。

I've heard some exchange horror stories, have you or your friends had any bad experiences?

交換留学の嫌な話を聞いたことがあるのですが、あなたやあなたの友達は、嫌な経験をした？

Not really

私たちはない。

But our friend... there's this boy exchange student

でも私たちの友達…交換留学生の男の子で、

This guy that came to our school

私達の高校にいるんだけど、

His homestay he couldn't go in unless he had a key

ホームステイ先の家に、鍵がないと入れないでしょ。

And they only had one key

でも鍵はひとつしかなくて、

So he just had to wait outside the house

だから彼は、家の外でずっと待たなきゃいけなかったの。

And just wait for them to come home?

ホストファミリーの人たちが帰ってくるのを？

Ok that's really bad

それは災難だね。

My homestay's really nice

私のホームステイ先は、すごくよくしてくれる。

They're really flexible and stuff

すごく融通を利かせてくれる。

After the bunkasai (school festival) we had an after party

文化祭のあとに打ち上げがあったんだけど、

And she was just like "Make sure you come home late! Go have fun!"

「遅く帰ってこないとダメよ！ 楽しんでね！」みたいに言ってくれた。

She's really sweet

凄く優しい人なの。

How about school wise, have you had any problems at school?

学校の方はどう、何か困ったことある？

A lot of gossip

噂話が絶えない。

Typical high school problems

それはどこの高校もそうだねw

Not really like an exchange problem I guess

交換留学に特有の問題じゃないかな。

What if you have a problem with something?

困ったことがあったらどうする？

Is it easy to find someone to talk to?

誰か相談できる人はいる？

If you had an issue with your homestay would there be someone available to talk to?

ホームステイ先のことで悩みがあったら、誰かに相談できる？

Yeah

できるよ。

When I was doing my program, I didn't have any problems with my homestay - they were great

私のホームステイ先も、何の問題もなかった。みんな優しかった。

But we did have a counsellor in the school that we could talk to if we had any problems

学校には、困ったときに相談できる係の人がいたけどね。

I never really heard anything too bad during my exchange

私の交換留学の時は、そんなにひどい話は聞いたことない。

There were a couple people who had really strict homestays

ホームステイ先が凄く厳しい子たちもいたけど。

So they wouldn't let them go out late

夜遅くに出かけさせてくれなかったり。

Lots of the other students would go out partying and drinking

他の子たちは、パーティーに行ったりしてたんだけど、

and a couple of the students, their homestays wouldn't let them go

その子たちは、ホームステイ先の人が出かけさせてくれないの。

So they were kinda upset about that

だから、その子たちはちょっと不満だったみたい。

But they just had stricter rules for their children

だけどそういうホストファミリーは、自分の子供にも厳しいんだよね。

So they apply those to their exchange student as well

そのルールを、交換留学生の子にも当てはめてるだけで。

So it really depends on the family

だから家族によるかな。

I didn't really hear of anything bad

そんなにひどい話は聞いたことない。

When you're going through YouTube lots of things pop up like "HORRIBLE EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE"

YouTubeには、「最悪の交換留学」みたいな動画がたくさんあるけど。

There's so many videos about horrible exchanges in Japan

日本の交換留学でのひどい話の動画がたくさんある。

I hope this will give you an opportunity to hear about some good stories

この動画で、いい話もあるって伝えられたら嬉しいな。

I'm also gonna make a video talking about my total homestay experience

私のホームステイの経験について、もっとちゃんと話す動画も作るつもり。

I myself didn't have any problems at all

私の場合は、全然問題なかった。

My homestay Mom, she's not fluent but she understands English

私のホームステイ先のママは、英語通じるんだよね、流暢には喋れないけど。

If you aren't that strong in Japanese, make sure you have someone who knows a little bit of English

日本語に自信がない人は、英語が多少わかる人を見つけたほうがいい。

Otherwise it's gonna be really difficult

そうしないと苦労すると思う。

I did get a book beforehand from the homestay company

それから、ホームステイを紹介する会社が出してる本があって、

And it said things to be careful of, like cultural differences

文化の違いとか、気をつけなきゃいけないことが書いてある。

So in Japan you have to eat all of your food

たとえば日本では、出された料理は残さず食べなきゃいけない。

Right right

そうだね。

And if you don't they might think you hate their cooking or something

ご飯を残すと、不味かったのかなとかおもわれちゃうかも。

So it said make sure you explain that first

だから、（残す場合は）ちゃんと説明しろって書いてあった。

That's nice that they gave you a book

そういう本をもらえたのはいいね。

When you leave it's so sad, everyone cries

帰るときは凄く悲しいよ、みんな泣く。

Yeah

そうそう。

I still talk to my homestay! It's been like 12 years and I still talk to them

私はホームステイ先の人とまだ連絡とってるよ。12年も経つけどね。

Yeah they're really nice

凄くいい人たち。

What does your school uniform look like?

あなたの制服はどんな感じ？

You can either wear a ribbon or a tie

リボンとネクタイ選べるんだ。

Oh you can choose! That's neat

選べるんだ、いいね。

But for special occasions you have to wear a bow

でも特別な日は、リボンつけなきゃいけない。

So the bow is more formal?

リボンの方が正式なんだ。

The boys have different colours... red, green, white, blue

それから男子は色が違う。赤、緑、白、青。

And the boys are just a tie right?

男子はネクタイだけ？

Just a tie, yeah

そう、ネクタイだけ。

You have to wear a blazer on formal occasions

正式な場では、ブレザーを着なきゃいけない。

That's really cute

凄くかわいいね。

And everyone has their little name written inside

内側に名前が小さく書いてあるの。

The name's embroidered on the inside

名前が内側に縫い付けられてるんだ。

And then the school logo on the front

校章もついてるよ。

We have our PE wear

これはジャージ。

For sports classes

体育のだね。

PE is fun

体育楽しいよ。

Our summer uniform

これが夏服。

So the uniform changes throughout the seasons

季節によって制服が変わるんだね。

Cute little sweater vest, and then you wear a collared shirt underneath it

かわいいベスト。この下にシャツを着るのかな。

Show them the skirt, the skirt is so cute

スカート見せて、スカート凄くかわいい。

The colours are so nice

Do you wear it this length? Or do you roll yours up?

この長さのまま履いてる？ それとも、丸めて短くしてる？

二回巻いてる。

Yeah I roll it twice too

私も二回。

If you wanna make your skirt shorter you can roll it up a little bit

スカートを短くしたかったら、腰のところで少し巻いて履くんだよね。

Some girls will do it long on purpose, because that can also be cool

わざと長いまま履く子もいる。それはそれでオシャレなの。

And what do the socks look like?

靴下はどんな感じ？

They're grey knee highs

グレーのニーソックス。

No one wears them knee high

でも、「ニー（膝）」まで上げて履く子は誰もいないw

Apparently currently the style is to not wear your socks really high

今の流行りだと、靴下は上まであげないらしいの。

So they'll roll them down

少し巻いて履くんだ。

When I was in... god this makes me sound so old

私ものときはね…これを言うと凄い歳とった気分になるけどw、

When I was doing my exchange, the slouch socks were popular

私が交換留学で来た頃は、ルーズソックスが流行ってたの。

The white slouchy socks

白いルーズソックス。

Everyone would have the really baggy socks and they'd slouch them up

みんなだぶだぶの靴下を巻いて履いてた。

Nowadays I guess you don't really see that

最近は全然見かけないと思う。

When I first started I was like, Oh it's Japanese high school!

私は最初の頃、日本の高校だし、

So I had them like, up to here!

靴下を膝まで上げて履かなきゃって思ってたの。

Like I had seen on anime and stuff

アニメとかでよく見るでしょ。

And my friend was like, no that's really uncool you gotta stop

そしたら友達は、ダサいからやめた方がいいって。

ダサいからやめて〜、みたいなw

What are the rules for appearance?

容姿に関するルールはある？

Are you allowed to colour your hair and wear makeup?

髪を染めたり、メークしたりしてもいい？

Nope.

ダメだね。

So do they think this is your natural hair?

ってことは、みんなそれが地毛だと思ってるの？

Yeah and then the brown starts showing
