日本でプロになったマンガ家のオーサさんです！

So we're going to talk to her a little bit today

なので今日はオーサさんに話を聞いて、

And give you some advice, for those of you that are thinking of becoming a mangaka in Japan

日本でマンガ家になりたいと思っている人に アドバイスを伝えたいと思います。

and yeah, I'm really excited to talk to her!

So if you could tell us a little about yourself, your background and how you ended up here

じゃあ、まず自分自身のこと、日本に来ることになった 経緯から話してもらえる？

I came to Japan about 4 years ago

はい、日本には 4年ほど前に来ました。

By then I had been working in Sweden as a freelance manga artist for 7 years

それまでにスウェーデンでフリーのマンガ家として 7年かな？働いてたのね。

And then I studied Japanese in Japan

それから日本で日本語を勉強して、

and then I studied graphic design to get a diploma

それからグラフィックデザインを勉強して学位を得て。

and then after that I got published

それから出版したの。

I was published with a book called "The Scandinavian Girl Asa's Mysterious Adventures in Japan"

出版した本のタイトルは「北欧女子が見つけた…

I know what the Japanese title is so I'm picturing you translating it

日本語のタイトルは知ってる。いま頭の中で翻訳してる？ :-)

Mysterious Adventures in Japan

「北欧女子が見つけた日本の不思議」だよね。

So I did that, and that was a 4-koma manga

そう。出版したのは、四コマ漫画形式。

Which is like 4 panels, like strip comics

これはコマが四つあって、新聞掲載マンガみたいなものなのね。

And just finished the 2nd one which will be out in like 2 weeks

で、最近 2冊目を仕上げて、発売が2週間後。

Ooo I'm looking forward to reading it!

それ早く読みたい！

I read the first one and it's adorable

1冊目は読みました。すっごく良かったです！

and I can relate to so many of the stories in it so it was really fun for me to read

How can you get started as a manga artist in Japan?

日本でマンガ家として活動するにはどうしたら良いんですか？

Well I think there are a lot of different paths you can take

えっと、色々な方法があると思う。

I only know what I did

わかるのは自分のやったことだけだけど…

If you write manga, you don't necessarily have to go to Japan

マンガを描いているなら、日本に行く必要はないわよね。

That would obviously be the easiest

これができればもちろん一番簡単だけど。

But you can also write manga in your own country, get it translated to Japanese

自分の国でマンガを描いて、その日本語翻訳版を作って、

and send it

日本に送れば簡単。

Ahh and get it published here as well?

ああ、そして日本で出版してもらうのね？

Well I have one Swedish colleague, she's like a super talented mangaka

えっと、スウェーデンに同業の仲間がいるんだけど、 超才能のあるマンガ家で、

She won a prize in Ribon, which is a really famous shojo manga magazine here

「りぼん」っていうすごく有名な少女マンガ誌で賞を取ったの。

So it's possible to do it from outside Japan as well

日本国外でもできるっていうことね。

But there is the thing with the Japanese I suppose

でも日本語特有のこともあると思うので、

You have to write in Japanese...

日本語で描くべきかなと…

It will be a lot easier if you can speak it yourself

日本語が話せるなら、誰かに全部翻訳してもらうより、

Instead of having someone to translate everything

最初から自分で描いた方がずっと簡単だし。

So the first step would be learning Japanese guys

聞きました？ 最初にすべきなのは日本語学習です。

So get on that first!

まずはそこから！

And that of course is much easier to do in Japan

もちろん日本語を習うなら日本で習う方がずっと簡単だから、

So if you have a chance to do that

機会があったら。

Schools in Japan, they are a little pricey

日本の学校はちょっと高いけど、

But it will also get you a visa, which is awesome

ビザがもらえるし、それって素敵なことだし。

So if you come to Japan on a student visa and study Japanese

学生ビザで日本に来て日本語を勉強するなら、

You can do manga "katsudou"....

マンガ家「活動」ができるし。

You can work as a manga artist...

マンガ家として働けるってことね。

You can start showing your stuff to different magazines and editors and stuff

そう、色んな雑誌、編集者なんかに自分の作品を見せることができるようになるの。

So it's actually a really good thing to do at the same time

両方できるってすごくいいことよ。

What do you think of manga school in Japan?

日本のマンガ学校をどう思いますか？

There are several schools that you can do to here to study how to draw manga

日本にはマンガの描き方を教える学校がいくつもあります。

Do you have experience with those? Did you go to one of those?

そういうところでの経験はある？ マンガ学校に行った？

I did... but I kind of lost my nerve

うん。でも、無理かな、って思っちゃって…

Really?

そうなの？

Yeah... so I really wanted to study manga

うん、ほんとにマンガを勉強したかったんだけど、

But I ended up studying graphic design instead

そうじゃなくグラフィックデザインを勉強することになっちゃって。

I was like "Oh you can't become a manga artist in Japan..."

「ああ、日本でマンガ家になるなんて無理だ」っていう感じで。

But you can!

なったじゃない！

So you really wanted to be a manga artist, but you kinda felt like it was too difficult?

すごくマンガ家になりたかったけど、だめだ、できそうにないって思っちゃったとか？

I was just obsessed with somehow working in Japan

そう、とにかく日本で働くことしか考えてなくって…

But anyway, there are manga schools. They're called "senmongakkou"

何にせよ、はい、マンガ学校はあります。「専門学校」と呼ばれる学校ね。

Which is like a college

「カレッジ」みたいなもの。

And they have animation courses, and manga courses and stuff

アニメーション講座、マンガ講座などがあって。

Anyone can get in, as long as you clear the school's requirements

入学は、条件を満たせば誰でもできる。

Japanese is always one of those I think

日本語、も必ず条件に入ってるよね。

Are there any schools that will accept only English speakers?

英語話者だけを受け入れてる学校はあるかしら？

Not that I know of...

私の知る限り、ない…

You need Japanese, probably N2 level

日本語は必須、多分 N2 レベルですね。

That's a pretty common requirement

だいたいそこが求められるレベルです。

So get on studying for your JLPT!

日本語能力試験の勉強をしましょう！

Which is a pain in the butt, I know because I did it!

やったことあるんで、とてもキツイ試験だって知ってますが、

But if you clear that, you're kinda eligible for lots of different things in Japan

でもクリアすると、日本の色んなことに対して 資格みたいなものができます。

It'll be easier to get a visa probably, easier to join a school and get a job

ビザを取るのも多分簡単になるし、学校に入るのも仕事につくのも。

Clear your N2

まずは、N2。

How can you get your art seen by publishing companies?

どうやったら作品を出版社に見てもらえますか？

Do you just contact a company randomly and say

出版社に見てもらう時、ねー、マンガ描いたから

Hey I draw manga, check it out!

見てくださいねー、って言って手当たり次第に

and just send it to them?

送るの？

Yeah there are a lot of different ways to do it

うん、いろんな方法がある。

So I studied graphic design, but I also had a lot of electives

私はグラフィックデザインを勉強したけど 他の選択科目も沢山あって、

Where everything was manga related

みんなマンガに関連してたの。

So those teachers were always telling us, you have to do mochikomi!

だから先生方もみんな「持ち込みしなさい」って！

Which is basically, you bring your stuff to a publisher

「持ち込み」って、出版社とか編集者に自分の作品を見せて

or an editor, and show it and you get feedback

感想を言ってもらうの。

and I think anyone can do this

誰でもできると思う。

They're willing to sit down with you and look over your stuff

それって時間を取って作品を見てくれるってこと？

Yeah! If they think your stuff is interesting

そう、もし作品が面白そうだと思ってくれたらね。

But I didn't do it that way, you can go to manga markets

でも私はそうはしないで… マンガのマーケットに持ってったの。

I think the most famous one is Comiket

一番有名なのはコミケットだと思うけど…

Have you been?

行ったことある？

Yeah, and set up a little table and sell your stuff

うん、小さなテーブルに作品を置いて売るんでしょ？

And then publishers will come and look around at stuff, so you can get recognised there?

そこに出版社が来て、いろいろ見て回って、 見出してもらえたりするの？

And build connections that way

そしてツテができたり？

I'm more fond of one called Comitia actually

私はコミティアっていうマーケットの方が好きなの。

Comiket is like so huge, it's massive!

コミケットはそれはそれは大きくて！

But Comitia is smaller, and it's only for original manga

でもコミティアはもっと小さくて、 それに一次創作のマンガだけなの。

So not doujinshi, which is like Naruto

だから「ナルト」の同人誌みたいのはなくて。

So I really recommend that!

だからすごくお薦め！

And there they had an editor area where you can just fill out a paper

編集者のコーナーもあって、書類に記入すれば…

Of course, Japan, there's always gonna be a paper to fill out

日本なので、必ず書類記入があるんだけど…

Lot's of papers, learn your kanji!

書類だらけ。漢字を覚えましょう！

So I just did that, and then you can go and show your stuff

…記入して、そこで作品を見せたの。

That was how I got in touch with my publishing company

そうやって今の出版社とつながりができた。

That sounds a lot less stressful than having to go to a company by yourself

そっちの方が、自分で出版社に行くよりずっと気が楽そう。

I think an event like that might be a good way to start out guys

そういうイベントが、マンガ家になるための 良い場になるかもしれませんね。

Are the deadlines as stressful as shown in anime?

〆切はアニメで見るようにキツイものですか？

Yes.

はい。

Yes? Haha that's really life guys! It's actually like that!

「はい」？ (^_^) 皆さん、本当だそうです、実際にキツイそうです！

Well it really depends

場合によるんだけど…

I read a manga called Bakuman

「バクマン」っていうマンガを読んだの。

Yeah I've heard of it

うん、聞いたことある。

So I thought it was gonna be like that, just like dying

そんな風になるんだろうな、死にそうになるんだろうなって思った。

But it's not that hard

けどそれほどじゃなかった。

And it really depends on what you're doing

やっていることによるのよね。

I'm only working part time actually, because my manga doesn't run in a magazine

私の場合、雑誌に連載している訳じゃないので、 実際はパートタイム仕事なの。

It just gets published on my blog actually

自分のブログに掲載しているだけなので、

So that gets collected as manga books

それを集めて一冊のマンガ本にしただけだし。

But if you have a weekly section

でももし毎週掲載しなきゃならないとしたら…

Then you're pretty tight for your schedule

そしたらスケジュールはかなりきついと思う。

That's just insane

ひどいことになるよね。

It's amazing though! It's amazing :D

すごいことだけど。すごいことなんだけど！

So do you enjoy it? You're enjoying working as a mangaka?

それで、楽しんでる？ マンガ家として働くのは楽しい？

Yeah, oh it's amazing

うん、すごく！

You're glad that you chose this path?

この道を選んで良かった？

I'm so happy that I got this chance to be published in Japan as well

日本でも出版する機会がもらえてとっても嬉しい！

Like I never thought it would happen actually, but it did!

こんなことができるなんて、思ってもみなかったもの。 でもできた！

You can do it!

できるのよ！

I think that's really cool, that you're an example that it can happen

クールだよね、できるっていう例を示したんだから。

I see lots of you guys commenting on my videos asking if it's possible to be a mangaka here

多くの皆さんが、日本でマンガ家になることができるかって、 私のビデオへのコメントで聞いてましたよね。

And I've seen people reply to you and be like "Pfft NO. Too much Japanese competition, you don't have a chance"

そして、「いやあ、無理だろう、日本では競争が激しすぎて、 可能性はない」って返事する人たちがいました。

But Asa is proof that it can happen! So don't give up!

でもオーサさんが、できるって証明しました！ だから諦めないで！

If you're passionate about becoming a manga artist

マンガ家になりたいという強い想いがあるのなら、

Then go for it! Why not?

突き進みましょうよ！

If you fail, you fail. But you might as well give it a shot!

うまく行かないかもしれません。でもやってみては？

I should probably say that I'm not the only one either

私だけじゃないというのは、多分、言っておいた方が良いよね。

There are others, there's a German girl called Caroline Eckhardt

他の人、例えばカロリン・エックハルトっていう ドイツ女性もいるし。

She's published 2 tankobons

単行本 2冊出してる。

And I have another friend called Benjamin Boas who writes manga scripts

他にもベンジャミン・ボアズっていう友達がいて、 マンガの原作を書いてる。

He doesn't draw it himself, which is actually quite common

描くのは他の人がやるんだけど、 それって実はよくあるケースだから。

So that's another option too, if you suck at art!

絵が下手でも、そういう道もあります！

One of the other questions was is it more important to be a good artist, or good at coming up with stories

質問として、絵が上手い方が大事か、 ストーリーを思いつける方が大事かっていうのがありました。

So you could just do one or the other, if you're only good at one of them

どっちか一方だけが得意だったとしても、それで行けるってことよね？

Yeah you can, it's actually quite common

うん、行けるし、実際にかなり普通にある。

There's quite a lot of people who want to tell their own stories or something

自分のストーリーだかを語りたい人はかなり沢山いて、

And then they get a Japanese mangaka to draw it for them

そういう人たちは日本のマンガ家に絵を描いてもらうの。

But the thing about being a foreigner as a mangaka in Japan

でも、日本にいる外国人のマンガ家だというのは、

That is your strongest point, and your weakest point at the same time

最大の強みであり、同時に最大の弱点でもあるの。

Is there a lot of competition?

競争は激しいですか？

It's just monstrous

そりゃもうもの凄くて。

Of course it's insane, yeah

そうだよねキツイよね。

But as a foreigner, that's your weapon! That's the thing you can do that Japanese people can't do

でも外国人っていうのが武器なの。日本人にはできないこと。

The thing I've been told constantly from my teachers and publishers

先生や出版社にずっと言われてきたことは、

is to use your foreign perspective when you write stories

自分の外国人としての視点を使って ストーリーを書きなさいってこと。

It's a bit limiting, really

それだとね、ほんとは限られちゃうんだけど。

Because you basically just draw mangas about being a foreigner in Japan

というのは、マンガに描くのは基本的に 日本にいる外国人としてとか、

Or about your own country, or international marriage love stories

自分の国についてとか、 国際結婚のラブストーリーに関してとかになっちゃうから。

But it's so true though

でもほんと、そうなのよね。

Yeah that's what you can do, and other people can't

そうね、それが、他の人にできなくて自分にできることだものね。

Yeah kinda like your secret weapon kinda thing

そう、何ていうか、自分の秘密兵器っていうか。

I read your first 4-koma manga series

最初の本は四コママンガのシリーズだったよね。

And the art is so different to that, it was neat to see the contrast

でも今回のマンガは全然違っていて、 そのコントラストがなかなか良くて。

And these are published in Japanese, Swedish and English

これは日本語、スウェーデン語、英語で出版されてます。

It's called "Sayonara September"

「さよならセプテンバー」というタイトルです。

So what's the main idea of the story?

どんなあらすじ？

It's during one year, and the main character, is a girl who wants to become a manga artist

主人公はマンガ家になりたい女子で、その子に一年の間に

and the process

起きる話。

Yeah so that might be kinda interesting for you guys too

なので、皆さんにとっても面白いかも。

Is it based a lot off of your own personal experiences?

自分自身の体験に基づいた部分が多いのかな？

Yeah some of it is, but it's actually quite dark

そうね、一部は。でも実際かなり暗いわよ。

And very dramatic

でもって浮き沈みが激しくて。

I think that is actually very interesting

結構おもしろいと思うけど。

When foreigners draw manga, when they've been reading Japanese manga and stuff

外国人がマンガを描くと、日本のマンガとかをずっと読んでいて、

Like what you get inspired by, what you use in your own books as well

刺激を受けたものとか、自分の本の中でも使ったりして、

There's a lot of like Sailor Moon, Shojo Kakumei Utena, kind of dark stories

「セーラームーン」とか「少女革命ウテナ」とか、 暗いストーリーっぽいのが多くて、

I like that, because it's such a contrast to your first work that I read

そういうの好き、私が最初に読んだオーサの作品と 趣きが全然違っていて。

Yeah it's so different from my strip comics!

そうね、私の四コママンガとはかなり違う！

People read it and they're like Oh my gosh! Are you ok!?

読んだ人がね、えっ！オーサ大丈夫!? なんて言うの。

But no, I think that's really cool that you have such flexibility to make both types

でもどっちのタイプのマンガも書ける柔軟性があって、すごく素敵。
