If you were given the choice to sign up for that kind of existence, would you?

そんなものにサインアップできるとしたら、皆さんはしますか？

That's the question philosopher Robert Nozick posed through a thought experiment he called the Experience Machine.

哲学者のロバート・ノージックは、自身が「Experience Machine」と名付けた思考実験でこの事を問いました。

The experiment asks us to consider a world in which scientists have developed a machine that would simulate real life, while guaranteeing experiences of only pleasure and never pain.

この実験は、科学者が作り出した機械で実際の人生で楽しい経験だけを得られて苦しみは全く無い人生を送ることができる事を考えるものです。

The catch? You have to permanently leave reality behind, but you'll hardly know the difference.

ただし、現実からは永遠に切り離されてしまいます。でも違いを認識する事もありませんが。

Your experiences will be indistinguishable from reality.

経験する内容は現実と区別がつきません。

Life's natural ups and downs will just be replaced with an endless series of ups.

山あり谷ありの人生は、山だけの幸せな人生になるのです。

Sounds great, right?

すごくいい感じですよね？

It may seem like a tempting offer, but perhaps it's not as ideal as it sounds.

なかなか拒否しがたいオファーですけど、実は思っているよりも良い物ではないかもしれません。

The experiment was actually designed to refute a philosophical notion called hedonism.

この実験は「快楽主義」と呼ばれる哲学的概念への反論として作られました。

According to hedonists, maximizing net pleasure is the most important thing in life because pleasure is the greatest good that life has to offer.

快楽主義者によると、人生で一番大切なのは楽しみを最大限にまで高めるものですが、それは楽しみこそが人生で得られる最高の物だと考えるからです。

For hedonists, the best choice that a person could make for himself is one that brings him the greatest possible amount of pleasure while bringing him no pain.

快楽主義者にとっては、人間がなしうる最高の選択は、自身に苦しみを全く伴うことなく可能な限りの楽しみをもたらすことだというわけです。

Limitless pleasure minus zero pain equals maximum net pleasure, or in other words, the exact scenario the Experience Machine offers.

限界の無い楽しみに苦しみが全く無いとなれば、楽しみをそのまま受け取ることができるわけで、別の言い方をすればそれが「Experience Machine」がもたらすものなのです。

Therefore, if hedonism is your philosophy of choice, plugging in would be a no-brainer.

ですから、快楽主義を選ぶのであれば、この機械につながりたいと思うのは考えるまでもないことです。

But what if there's more to life than just pleasure?

でも、人生とは楽しむだけではないとしたらどうでしょうか？

That's what Nozick believed he was demonstrating through his Experience Machine thought experiment.

ノージックは「Experience Machine」の実験を通して、このことを実際に示してみたかったわけです。

Despite the machine's promise of maximum net pleasure, he still found reason not to plug in, as do many other experimenters who consider the proposition.

機械は最大の楽しみを与えてくれるにもかかわらず、彼はつながりたくないという理由がたくさんありましたし、この実験に参加した多くの人たちも同じような意見でした。

But what could possibly dissuade us from choosing a future of ultimate pleasure?

でも、何が私たちを未来の究極な楽しみに満ちた人生を選ぶことを思いとどまらせるのでしょうか？

Consider this scenario: Betsy and Xander are in a loving, committed relationship.

このシナリオを考えてみて下さい。ベッツィーとザンダーは愛に満ちた素晴らしい関係を築き上げています。

Betsy is head over heels and has never felt happier.

ベッツィーはドップリはまって、こんなに幸せに感じた事はありません。

However, unbeknownst to Betsy, Xander has been romancing her sister, Angelica, with love letters and secret rendezvous for the duration of their relationship.

ところが、ベッツィーの知らない所でザンダーは彼女の妹のアンジェリカと浮気をしていて、交際中にラブレター交換や秘密に会ったりしていました。

If Betsy found out, it would destroy her relationships with both Xander and Angelica, and the experience would be so traumatic she would never love again.

もしベッツィーが見つければ、自分とザンダー、アンジェリカ両者との関係は崩れてしまい、心にトラウマが深く残るでしょうし二度と恋愛をすることもないかも知れません。

Since Betsy is in blissful ignorance about Xander's infidelity, hedonists would say she's better off remaining in the dark and maintaining her high level of net pleasure.

ここではベッツィーはザンダーの不貞行為に気付いていないので、快楽主義者は彼女は事実を知らないままで自分が感じている最大限の楽しみを受け続ければいい、と言うでしょう。

As long as Betsy never finds out about the relationship, her life is guaranteed to go on as happily as it is right now.

ベッツィーが浮気に気付かなければ、人生は今後も今のように幸せが続くわけです。

So, is there value in Besty knowing the truth of her situation?

では、ベッツィーが真実を知り事に価値はあるのでしょうか？

Imagine if you were Betsy: Would you prefer to know the truth?

自分がベッツィーだと想像してみて下さい。真実を知りたいですか？

If the answer is "Yes", you'd be choosing an option that sharply decreases your net pleasure.

答えがイエスの場合は、皆さんは幸せレベルが大きく下がる選択をしているわけです。

Perhaps, then, you believe that there are things in life with greater intrinsic value than pleasure.

ではそういう場合は、おそらく人生には楽しみよりもより内的な価値があるものがあると信じているのでしょう。

Truth, knowledge, authentic connection with other human beings.

真実や、知識、別の人間との本物のつながり、などです。

These are all things that might make the list.

こういったものがあてはまるでしょう。

By never learning the truth, Betsy is essentially living life in her own personal Experience Machine, a world of happiness that's not based in reality.

真実を消して知らないことで、ベッツィーは基本的には自分の Experience Machine の中で生きている事になるのです。現実に基づくのではない幸せに満ちた世界です。

This love triangle is an extreme example, but it mirrors many of the decisions we make in day-to-day life.

この三角関係は極端な例ですけど、私たちが人生で直面する意志決定の多くを反映させたものです。

So whether you're making a choice for Betsy or for yourself, why might you feel reality should be a factor?

ですから、ベッツィーに代わってもしくは自身の意思決定をする際には、なぜ現実が重要になるのでしょうか？

Is there inherent value in real experiences, whether pleasurable or painful?

楽しみであっても苦しみであっても、実際の経験に内的な価値があるのでしょうか？

Do you yourself have more value when you're experiencing real life's pleasures and pains?

現実における楽しみや苦しみを経験する時に、そこにより価値を見出すでしょうか？

Nozick's experiment may not provide all the answers, but it forces us to consider whether real life⏤though imperfect⏤holds some intrinsic value beyond the pleasure of plugging in.

ノージックの実験は答えをくれるものではないかもしれませんが、完全ではないとしても現実の人生を生きることで、ただ楽しみだけを得られる機会につながる以上の内的価値を得られるのかどうかという点について考えさせられます。
