Hi, I am Jyothi Chabria. We will be discussing poly cystic ovaries and thyroid in this segment.
Poly Cystic Ovaries is a condition which is so rampant today amongst youngsters. Symptoms
of poly cystic ovaries is unexplained weight gain, facial hair, acne, hair fall, infertility
in later part of life when you are trying for pregnancy, it causes delay in pregnancy,
it causes pigmentation in some patients. These are all due to hormonal imbalance. Likewise
thyroid is also a insufficiency of the thyroxine hormone in thyroid gland. There are two types
of thyroid actually, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is where 90% of the segment
belongs to where people tend to gain weight. Again in this you have irregular periods with
young girls, weight gain. Hyperthyroidism is a condition which is seen much, in lesser
section of the society, where people tend to lose weight in hyper hyperthyroidism. Now
basically this is because of hormonal imbalance of the hormones. In fact poly cystic ovaries,
thyroid and diabetes are like three ends to a triangle. One hormonal imbalance can lead
to the other. Well if you do ask me how to correct this? the line of treatment for hypothyroid
patient or poly cystic ovaries patient is nothing but weight loss. In fact there is
a very small segment of patients who are lean and yet still have poly cystic ovaries, but
despite that what we do is we put them on weight, not necessarily a weight loss program
but we try to curb their weight so that, its all about improving circulation. So, in terms
of weight loss what we do is we put them on a low calorie diet, more frequent smaller
meals that goes through the day and we encourage exercise because exercise plays a very major
role in poly cystic and thyroid patients which helps them to improve circulation. In a poly
cystic ovary patient or a thyroid patient who is over weight we would definitely recommend
them to have a low carb diet with a medium protein, of course based on their age, height,
weight all that is taken in to account. But things like lemon grass which are again having
anti oxidants properties, flax seed are encouraged. So, in poly cystic ovaries patients what we
would definitely recommend is a low carbohydrate diet with medium protein. We help them to
use protein as a source of energy and whats important is it is all about improving circulation,
so exercise is really encouraged in PCOD patients. Now, we have seen that as patients start losing
weight all these symptoms that they have been experiencing over the past 2 - 3 months start
corrected as they start losing weight. And, foods which are encouraged are things like
you know green tea, probably which has anti oxidants, flax seed, you have lemon grass,
wheat grass juice which again helps to cover the anti oxidant quotient that is required in their diet.
