The Search for the Eternal Lover

永遠なる恋人を求めて

You are all in search of a secret love.

あなた方はみな神秘の愛を探している

And you are all

そしてあなたがたはみな

trying to find it in somebody

それを誰かに見いだそうとしている

Hence the frustration

ゆえに欲求不満だ

all lovers

会うことを決して

except those

許されなかった

who are never allowed to meet.

恋人たちは例外だ

Only those who are never allowed to meet are remembered,

会うことを決して許されない者たちだけが

for centuries, for their great love.

何世紀にもわたって　偉大なる愛として思い起こされる

In the East we know

東洋で私たちが知っているのは

Shiri and Farhad,

シーリーンとファルハード

Laila and Majnu.

ライラとマジュヌ

Because they were never allowed to meet

なぜなら彼らは両親や社会によって

by their parents and society

決して会うことを許されなかったので

they have become symbolic of great lovers.

偉大な恋人の象徴となった

But it is strange:

しかし　おかしなことだ

they were never allowed

彼らはお互い会うことさえ

even to meet with each other,

決して許されなかったのに

and they have become the symbols of great love.

偉大な愛の象徴になった

And what has happened to

そして何百万という

millions of lovers

許された恋人たちには

who have been allowed?

何が起こったのだろうか？

Not a single one of them

彼らの誰一人として

has proved to be a great lover.

偉大な恋人とは認められなかった

All are simply lousy.

彼らはみな実にお粗末だ

Every love affair is a failure,

すべての恋愛は失敗だ

without exception.

例外はない

You may accept it, you may not.

あなたがそれを認めるかどうかは関係ない

One tries to hide the fact

できる限り長く事実を

as long as possible,

隠そうと試みるだろうが

but everybody knows what everybody is doing.

誰しも皆が何をしているか知っている

The reason is that Your frustration

欲求不満が避けられない

is bound to happen.

そのわけは

Your real love

あなたの本当の愛は

is for the eternal self,

永遠なる自分自身のためであり

hidden behind

カーテンの後ろに

the curtain,

隠れているからだ

and you never look

そしてあなたは一度も

behind the curtain.

カーテンの後ろを見たことがない

You are just playing on the stage

あなたはただ舞台の上で遊んで

and befooling.

お茶を濁している

Everybody’s

すべての人にとって

great love is to know the secret

偉大な愛とは　永遠で不死の生の

of the eternal and immortal life.

秘密を知ることだ

Because you cannot find it in another person.

なぜならそれを他の誰かの中に見つけることは できないからだ

When you meet on the sea beach

あなたがビーチで出会うと

it seems that

それはどうやら

to everyone

誰にとっても

it is the same story

同じ物語のようだ

That “this woman

「この女性は

or this man

あるいは　この男性は

is made for me.”

自分のためにつくられた」

And Nobody is made for anybody;

他の誰かのために作られた人はいない

everybody is made for himself.

誰もがその人自身のために作られた

You are not some

あなたは何か

kind of manufactured parts,

作られた機械の部品のように

that you are made to fit with each other.

お互いに適合するように作られたのではない

So when you don’t fit,

だから合わないときに

then the tragedy begins.

悲劇が始まる

Before that all is goody-goody.

それまではすべてがいい子ぶりっ子だ

The real test is after the honeymoon.

本当の試験はハネムーンが終わってからだ

After the honeymoon the lovers are finished,

ハネムーンのあと恋人は終わりだ

they don’t look at each other eye to eye.

互いの目と目を合わせない

The husband goes on reading the same newspaper

夫は同じ新聞を読み続ける

to avoid the wife….

妻を避けるために……

A man in the pub

男がパブで

was saying to his

友達に

friend

話しかけた

That, “Why do you always remain silent?

「なぜいつもだまっているんだい？

You don’t say anything.”

君は一言も話さない」

He said,

彼はこう言った

“The whole credit goes to my wife.

「すべては妻のおかげだよ

She talks and I listen.

彼女が話し　私は聞く

She does not like any interruption.

彼女は割って入られることを好まない

So after years of listening without interrupting,

さえぎることなく長年聞き続けたので

it has become a habit.

それは習慣になってしまった

Wherever I am,

どこにいても

even though my wife is not there,

妻がそこにいなくても

I sit silently.”

私は静かに座る」

The failure of love in the world

世間で愛が失敗していることからわかる

shows a significant fact:

明らかな事実とは

that our love is searching for something else,

私たちの愛は何か見当違いのものを 求めているということだ

and because we don’t find it

それをいわゆる恋人の

in our so-called lovers,

なかに見つけられないので

the frustration arises.

欲求不満が生じる

Nobody is responsible,it is just that our direction is wrong.

誰にも責任はない　それはただ私たちの 方向が間違っているということだ

The real lover is within you.

本当の恋人はあなたの内に在る

The eternal lover is within you.

永遠の恋人はあなたの内に在る

Once you have found it,

ひとたびそれを見つけたら

you are

あなたは

absolutely content

自分に完全に

with yourself.

満足する

There is no need

誰かを

for anyone

必要としない

because you are no longer incomplete.

あなたはもはや未完結ではないからだ

Only a buddha

ブッダだけが

is fulfilled.

満たされている
