Today we're at Tashirojima, aka CAT ISLAND!

田代島（通称・猫島）に行ってきました。

Tashirojima is a small fishing island off the coast of Sendai—only 1.2 square miles in area.

田代島は仙台湾内にあり、漁業が中心の島(3.14 km²)です。

And… it is inhabited by an extraordinary number of cats.

島には沢山の猫が住んでいます。

This island smells very strongly of dead fish.

魚の臭いがします。

This is the best day of my life.

They're all coming.

うわ、いっぱい来た。

This place is heaven. Never going home.

幸せ。もう帰りたくない。

By the way, fun fact: this isn't the only cat island in Japan.

There's another cat island called Aoshima in Ehime Prefecture.

青島がそれにあたります。

This however, is the main cat island.

And then there's this guy.

ああ、あとこの男も。

Cat island takes a 2600 yen (about $21), 50 minute ferry ride to get to.

フェリーで往復2600円。片道50分です。

The ferry only runs a couple of times per day,

1日に数便しかないので、

which means if you miss it or it gets canceled, you get stuck on cat island.

乗り遅れると翌日まで島に残る事になります。

Not exactly the worst thing in the world.

それはそれで楽しそうですが。

We made it to the cat shrine and this cat is so happy to see us.

猫神社に着いたら、出迎えが来ました。

We brought food.

ご飯もってきたよ。

There's one more over here.

It's basically a cat person's paradise…

愛猫家にはたまりません。

You see, cat island was never meant to be a tourist destination.

が、もともと田代島は観光場所ではありませんでした。

The cats were originally introduced to keep down mice populations,

元々、ネズミを減らすために島に連れてこられました。

and both superstition and a fondness for the cats led to an explosion in their population.

それから島民に大切にされ、猫人口が急増しました。

More than 100 stray cats now live on this island,

現在では100匹以上の野良猫が住んでいます。

and while some small measures have been taken to provide for tourism,

観光客用の施設もいくつかありますが、

it seems quite empty…

島はひっそりとしています。

It seemed like we were alone until we slowly started spotting people just sitting quietly in the shadows.

あそこの木陰で休んでいる人に気付くまで、ずっと私達だけしかいないと思っていました。

The population has halved in the last 20 years.

人口は過去20年で半減し

Now there are only 85 residents, 70 of which are elderly.

島民は現在85人です。うち70人が高齢者です。

I'm getting dumb today. I'm so excited about the cats.

今日はアホみたいだわ。猫にすごく興奮してる。

I can't think about anything else.

猫のことで頭がいっぱいになってる。笑

The island's village is actually classified as terminal,

国税調査では限界集落とされています。

which means it's on the verge of disappearing completely.

つまり、完全に消滅してしまう危険があります。

The economy isn't exactly booming.

経済も危ぶまれています。

Cat Island is less like a fantastical Japan wonderland from your dreams,

ファンタジックな場所だと思ってる人が海外には多いですが、

like Fox Village,

キツネ村のように。

and more like… a real place.

田代島は現実味のある島です。

It's just a place, with real world problems.

問題もあります。

The cats are strays, which means beyond being fed by villagers and visitors,

島民や旅行者以外からの施しはあまりなく、

they don't seem to be getting much care.

世話も行き届いてはいないので

A large portion of the cats we saw were sick or injured.

怪我や病気の猫も少なくありません。

Yeah, the baby doesn't look so good.

さっきからぐったりしてる。

And it felt very sad knowing that there really wasn't anything we could do for them,

何も出来なかったのは辛かったです。

other than buy them food.

It isn't all bad news, though.

ただ、救いはありました。

Cat Island was directly in the path of the 2011 Tohoku tsunami,

島は2011年の東北大震災の津波に直撃されましたが、

and while there was some damage the island managed to survive,

島は被害から生き延びることが出来ました。

along with the cats.

猫たちもです。

The water is all the way down there, and came up to here during 311.

津波はこの線まで来たそうです。

From here on out, we can only hope that someone else with a giant love of cats will find a way to

愛猫家の方々の力で、猫たちの問題が解決されることを祈るばかりです。

manage the situation so that the cats can get proper care and food, or at least get fixed.

猫たちがちゃんとしたケアや食べ物が与えられるよう願っています、最低でも解決して欲しいです。

All in all it's a beautiful island, with a priceless experience,

島はとても綺麗で、忘れられない経験ができました。

and I wouldn't trade my day with those cats for anything.

猫たちと触れ合えた日は何物にも変えがたいものになりました。

I also still recommend people visit.

1度は行ってみることをオススメします。

You can at the least still bring them food and attention, or toys to play with.

行くときは、キャットフードやおもちゃを忘れずに。

So if you have a chance to go to Miyagi Prefecture, try to make it up to Ishinomaki port and check out cat island!
