They fell off the wagon because their body was craving or needing carbohydrates. And then they wonder, am I addicted to carbs? The answer is, YES! You are. And for the record, I am referring to your starchy carbs such as breads, rice and pasta. I would never tell you to cut out things like vegetables and fruits. Especially vegetables, but you can definitely go overboard with fruit, so I would recommend sticking to low GI fruits such as berries and stone fruits. Your body actually releases the good feeling hormones such as serotonin when you eat those carbs. Makes you feel all good inside. So does that mean you need to eat them all the time. No, most people do not tolerate starchy or processed carbs well when dealing with weight loss. However, there are some people who tolerate them just fine, those people are in the minority. So how can you tell if you are addicted to carbs? Here are a few. 1. You can't seem to get going in the morning until you have something sugar based 2. You have a headache for a few days after cutting out your carbs. 3. You have extreme high energy levels followed by extreme lows. 4. You have to have some carbs after your cardio based workout. 5. You have to have some rice, pasta or bread at the end of the day. There are a few others. But all these indicate you are struggling to cut the carbs out. There are times in your day or week when carbs can be added in to increase your results and speed things up. For instance, after a strength training workout is a great time to eat carbs, and can be very beneficial. But for most people, it's a good idea to limit our sugars and processed carbohydrates. The headache you get after limiting carbs is due to water loss and goes away after a day or two, so be sure to drink enough water. And many of the other side effects can be driven away by either learning how to manipulate your carbohydrate intake or increasing your vegetables. I realize this makes it sound easier than it is, but those cravings and side effects go away after a short while. So don't feel as if you are alone when you struggle. Sugar actually releases chemicals to make you crave them even more and feel better, but its short lived.
