Today we're going to look at the different types of English in the world.

今日は、世界中の様々な英語の種類について見ていきましょう。

You may think that they're all the same.

英語は全て同じだと思われる人もいるかもしれません。

After all, it's the same language.

結局、同じ言語ですからね。

But actually, there are quite a few differences.

しかし実際、大きな違いがあるんです。

The most obvious one is pronunciation.

一番明らかなのは、発音ですね。

For example, can you tell where these characters are from?

例えば、これらのキャラクターはどこ出身かわかりますか？

The United States, Britain, or Australia.

アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリアのどれかです。

Hi, how ya doing?

どーも、元気ですか？

Hi, how are you?

どーも、元気ですか？

Good day, how are you going?

いい日ですね。元気ですか？

It isn't just pronunciation that's different, it's also spelling.

異なるのは発音に限りません。スペルもです。

British English sometimes uses extra letters.

イギリス英語は、アルファベットが少し多い場合があります。

Here are a few examples.

いくつか例をあげましょう。

British: Favourite

British: Favourite

U.S.: Favorite

U.S.: Favorite

British: colour

British: colour

U.S.: color

U.S.: color

Sometimes the British use different letter order, too.

時どき、イギリス英語では異なるアルファベット順を使うこともあります。

British: centre

British: centre

U.S.: center

U.S.: center

But the major difference is vocabulary.

しかしながら、主な違いは単語ですね。

Sometimes, even though people from the United States, Britain, and Australia all speak English, they can still get very confused when talking to each other.

アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリアの人々が同じ英語を話していても、お互い話すとき、混乱してしまうことがあります。

Because they use different word for the same thing.

なぜなら同じものに違う単語を使っているからです。

Listen to these.

これを聞いてみてください。

If you walk down the foot path, past the server, my units on the left.

歩行者道路を歩いて行って、ガソリンスタンドを通過したところで、左側に私のアパートがあります。

If you walk down the pavement, past the petrol station, my flats on the left.

（意味は同じ）歩行者道路を歩いて行って、ガソリンスタンドを通過したところで、左側に私のアパートがあります。

If you walk down the sidewalk, past the gas station, my apartments on the left.

（意味は同じ）歩行者道路を歩いて行って、ガソリンスタンドを通過したところで、左側に私のアパートがあります。

You probably prefer one type of English to another, depending on what you have been taught or what you're used to listening to.

教えられたり、聴き慣れた英語によって、どの英語が好ましいか分かれると思います。

That's perfectly okay.

それは全然大丈夫です。

There's no right or wrong type of English.

正しい英語や間違った英語というのはありません。

One is not better than any other.

どちらが良いというわけではありません。

Next time you listen to telly, TV, or watching a film, movie, try to listen out for the different accents and the vocabulary they use to see if you can guess where the people come from.

次回、テレビや映画を聞いた際、異なるアクセントや単語を聞いてみて、どこの出身か当ててみてください。

As far as Cambridge English writing and speaking exams are concerned, you can use the standard English you prefer.

ケンブリッジ英語ライティング、スピーキング試験に関して言いますと、どの標準英語を使っても構いません。

Cambridge English Exams are international, so it doesn't matter which English accent you have or what vocabulary you use.

ケンブリッジ英語試験は国際試験ですので、どの英語アクセントや単語を使っても問題ありません。

Just remember to be consistent.

ただ統一してくださいね。

Stick to one type, and don't mix them up.
