Like a rainwork.

Rainworkもそのうちの一つです。

Rainworks are pieces of street art that only appear when they're wet

Rainworkっていうのはストリートアートの一種で、路面が濡れている時だけ見ることができて、

and they're messages or images designed to make people's rainy day a little bit better.

それはメッセージだったりイラストだったりするんですけど、みんなに憂鬱な雨の日をちょっとだけ楽しく過ごしてもらえたら、というものなんです。

Seattle is associated with rain it's fair to say

シアトルと言えば雨、といっても過言じゃないですよね。

and rainworks all it needs to be is wet so

それに、Rainworkのためには路面が濡れなくちゃいけないんで

it's sort of the ideal Seattle art.

シアトルにピッタリのアートです。

So the stuff that makes rainworks is biodegradable, environmentally-friendly

Rainworkに使われる液体は生物分解性で環境に優しくて

and completely non-toxic.

毒性は全くありません。

The essential ingredient when making rainworks

Rainworkをする上で必要不可欠な材料は

is a super hydrophobic coating.

超撥水性コート剤です。

Ok, let's see how it works on the "NeverWetted" pants and shirt.

さぁ、まだ濡れたことのないシャツとズボンで実験してみましょう。

So you want me to start on the shirt, alright?

えっと、まずはシャツからだったっけ？

That is a chemical that when you put it on a surface will prevent that surface from getting wet.

これは物体の表面に塗ると水をはじいて濡れることがない化学物質です。

What! Woah! What!

えー！うわー！何だコレ！

I was just browsing the internet one day and stumbled across

ある日何気なくネットサーフィンしてたら、たまたま目にしたのが

a viral video, and the video showed

その時流行っていた動画で、その動画には

these really vivid images of red wine pouring off a white shirt

真っ白なシャツに赤ワインをかけたり

and chocolate syrup pouring off white shoes

白い靴にチョコレートシロップを垂らしたりとか

and people getting buckets of water thrown on them

バケツに入った色水を人にかけているのがはっきりと映っていて、

and they're like totally fine and I'm like "woah, that's super cool!"

でもどれも全然濡れることが無くて、「うわ、これスゲーな！」と思って

What can I do with this?

これを何かに使えないかなと思ったのがきっかけですね。

It's a spray-on substance so it made sense.

そして、これはスプレーして使う液体だから、

What if you sprayed it through a stencil?

ステンシルの上からスプレーしたらどうだろうか、と考えたわけです。

So if you put it on concrete well ideally it'd be invisible

コンクリートの路面でそれをやったら、多分目には見えないわけで

instead of the concrete getting dark the water would just roll right off it

水をかけたらコンクリートに染み込んで色が濃くなる代わりに、水はそのままはじかれていって

And it will stay light-colored.

その場所は明るい色のままになるんじゃないだろうかと。

The contrast can be used to create an image

そうやってできたコントラストを使って絵も描けるわけで。

The very first one I did said "Stay Dry Out There"

最初に描いたのは「皆さん濡れないようにね」という文字と

and had a bunch a rain drops falling on it.

その文字から雨粒がたくさん降っているものでした。

It was on a bus stop.

場所はバス停で。

And now there's about 25 to 30 rainworks out there

それから今まで大体25～30種類のRainworkを作ってきて

There's a lily pad and pond

例えばバラード地区には沼に浮かんだハスの葉の上を

with frogs hopping between them in Ballard.

カエルが飛び跳ねているアートがあります。

There's "I Heart Rain" in UW.

ワシントン大学には「アイラブレイン」のロゴがあるし、

At 4th and Bell it says "Worry is a Misuse of the Imagination".

4th and Bellには「心配というのは想像力の取り扱いを間違えた結果である」というフレーズがあって、

There's "Today's Weather: Rain" in Fremont.

フリーモントのアートは「本日の天気：雨」というものです。

There's "Proud To Be Rainy" in Capitol Hill

あと、キャピトル・ヒルには「雨の日サイコー」という文字があって、

There's hopscotch at the junction in West Seattle

ウエスト・シアトルの交差点には「けんけんぱ」の図が描いてあります。

And we want to make way more.

これからももっとたくさん増やしていきたいですね。

I mean it's gonna rain no matter what so why not do something cool with it!

だって、どうしたって雨は必ず降るわけだから、どうせならそれを利用して何か楽しい事を考えた方が良いじゃないですか！
