As you know, water is a very important resource that all living things depend on.

ご存知のように、水はすべての生物が依存する非常に重要な資源である。

When we talk about clean water and sanitation,

清潔な水と衛生について話すとき、

we're referring to the technical and social efforts that make safe and accessible water available to everyone in the world.

安全で利用しやすい水を、世界中の誰もが利用できるようにするための技術的・社会的努力のことである。

According to the United Nations,

国連によれば

one in three people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water.

世界では3人に1人が安全な飲料水にアクセスできていない。

And two out of five do not have a place to wash their hands.

また、5人に2人は手を洗う場所がない。

Millions of people do not even have access to a toilet.

何百万人もの人々がトイレにさえ行けない。

All this means that hygiene conditions in many places are quite limited.

こうしたことから、多くの場所の衛生状態はかなり限られている。

For these and other reasons, clean water and sanitation is one of the United Nations sustainable development goals.

こうした理由やその他の理由から、清潔な水と衛生設備は国連の持続可能な開発目標のひとつとなっている。

To solve these problems, it's necessary to do two things.

これらの問題を解決するためには、2つのことが必要だ。

Have clean water systems that improve the living conditions of all people,

and reduce water pollution.

そして水質汚染を減らす。

The United Nations wants to make safe drinking water universally accessible in the next few years.

国連は今後数年で、安全な飲料水を普遍的に利用できるようにしたいと考えている。

Wouldn't it be great if everyone in the world had safe drinking water in their homes?

In addition, the UN has given governments numerous tips and recommendations for improving water quality and restoring marine ecosystems.

To achieve this, it's essential to reduce pollution

and make clean water sources available in every part of the world.

Achieving clean water and sanitation requires effort from local, national, and international authorities and from all of us as a global community.

When we take care of water, we're taking care of the planet.

水を大切にすることは、地球を大切にすることでもある。
