So today, I'm going to talk about pets.

This is a fun topic, because many people have pets and like animals.

ペットを飼っている人や動物が好きな人は多いから、これは楽しい話題だ。

Let's start with dogs, since dogs are the most common pets.

犬は最も一般的なペットなので、まず犬から始めよう。

In the US, so many people have dogs.

アメリカでは多くの人が犬を飼っている。

You can see and hear dogs everywhere.

いたるところで犬を見聞きすることができる。

When I was younger, my family had many dogs.

若い頃、私の家族はたくさんの犬を飼っていた。

Some of them were big, and some of them were small.

大きいものもあれば、小さいものもあった。

They were all different kinds of dogs.

みんな違う種類の犬だった。

I always liked our big dogs more.

私はいつも大型犬の方が好きだった。

They were smart and fun.

Our small dogs were cute, but they weren't very smart.

All of our dogs loved to play.

I liked dogs, but now I don't want to have dogs.

If you have dogs, you need to spend a lot of time with them.

They need a lot of attention.

In the US, people treat their dogs very well.

They give them a lot of attention, and they play with them a lot.

Okay, now let's talk about cats.

さて、次は猫の話をしよう。

Some people like cats more than dogs, but I don't.

犬より猫が好きな人もいるが、私は違う。

I don't like cats at all.

Actually, I'm allergic to cats, so I stay away from them.

実は私は猫アレルギーなので、猫には近づかないようにしている。

Many people like cats because they're independent.

多くの人が猫を好きなのは、猫が自立しているからだ。

They don't need a lot of attention like dogs do.

犬のように多くの注意を払う必要はない。

So, if you have a cat, it's easy.

だから、猫を飼っている人なら簡単だ。

Also, cats are funny animals.

また、猫はおかしな動物だ。

There are many videos of cats doing very funny things.

猫がとても面白いことをしている動画はたくさんある。

My family never had cats, though.

私の家族は猫を飼っていなかった。

Okay, now let's talk about other types of pets.

In the US, some people like to have small pets, like hamsters or guinea pigs.

These animals live in cages, so they're easy pets to have.

これらの動物は檻の中で暮らしているので、飼いやすいペットだ。

You just need to feed them and clean their cage.

餌をやり、ケージを掃除するだけでいい。

I don't think these pets are very fun.

こういうペットはあまり楽しいとは思わない。

They're a little boring, in my opinion.

私の意見では、彼らは少し退屈だ。

But many people prefer these types of pets.

しかし、多くの人はこうしたペットを好む。

I've never had a hamster or guinea pig before, but I ate a guinea pig when I was in Peru.

ハムスターもモルモットも飼ったことはないけど、ペルーにいたときにモルモットを食べたよ。

In some countries, guinea pigs are food, not pets.

ある国では、モルモットはペットではなく食べ物である。

Other types of pets include birds, bunny rabbits, fish, and reptiles.

その他、鳥、ウサギ、魚、爬虫類などのペットもいる。

I had three fish when I was younger.

若い頃は3匹飼っていた。

Two of these fish died pretty fast, but one of the fish lived for several years.

そのうち2匹はすぐに死んでしまったが、1匹は数年生きた。

Fish are boring pets, though.

魚は退屈なペットだけどね。

When I was very young, my family had a gecko.

私が幼い頃、実家ではヤモリを飼っていた。

I liked to watch this gecko eat.

私はこのヤモリが食べるのを見るのが好きだった。

It ate live crickets and worms.

生きたコオロギやミミズを食べていた。

That was a cool pet.

クールなペットだった。

In the US, there are many animal shelters.

アメリカには多くの動物保護施設がある。

An animal shelter is a place that takes care of animals that don't have owners.

アニマルシェルターとは、飼い主のいない動物を保護する場所である。

Most of these animals are dogs, of course.

もちろん、そのほとんどは犬である。

If you go to an animal shelter, you can adopt these animals if you want.

動物保護施設に行けば、これらの動物を飼うことができる。

My family adopted several dogs from these animal shelters.

私の家族はこれらの動物保護施設から何匹かの犬を迎えた。

Some of these dogs were nice and fun, and some of these dogs were not very nice.

いい子で楽しい犬もいれば、あまりいい子じゃない犬もいる。

My favorite pet was our first dog.

一番好きなペットは最初の犬だった。

She was very smart, and she was beautiful.

彼女はとても賢く、美しかった。

I played with her, and I pet her every day.

私は彼女と遊び、毎日彼女を撫でた。

She lived with us for over 10 years.

彼女は10年以上も私たちと一緒に暮らした。

I miss that dog.

あの犬が懐かしい。

If I get a pet in the future, it will be a dog, but I don't think I want a pet.

将来ペットを飼うとしたら犬になるだろうけど、ペットを飼いたいとは思わない。
