We're on our way to our flight to Japan,

and we've done as much prep as possible to be able to enter the country, including our negative COVID tests.

But will it be enough to get back home to Japan with no issues?

There's a lot of things you need to have in hand before you can even get on that plane.

OK, to come back to Japan it's quite the complicated process.

So once you get your COVID tests, not only do they have to be negative,

The place where you get your COVID test has to fill out a form for the Japanese government

証明書は日本政府の様式を満たす必要があります

Stating what type of test it was, when it was done and that it was negative with the signature of the doctor.

検査の方式や実施時期等 項目があります

We have our negative COVID tests!

The first leg of the journey may be done, but the trip has only begun.

ダラスで東京行きに乗り換えます

Next will be a transfer in the hub city of Dallas before we board our plane headed for Tokyo.

OK, our trams here.

事前準備が沢山必要です

Before you even get on a plane for Japan, you must have a way to get into the country.

コロナ前は米国人は ビザ無しで日本に入国出来ました

In pre-COVID days an American could just show up in Japan and get a tourist visa.

Anna... Getting ready to board.

現在日本には 長期滞在の外国人しか入国出来ません

Now, about the only way a foreigner can get into Japan is if they are a returning resident, and even then it is strict!

全部私の席！

I get the whole row to myself!

You got the whole row to yourself? Yeah!

そっちも？いいね！

You too?! Oh that's so cool! This is my dream.

旅行者はゼロ 出張も激減 搭乗客は40人だけです

You can tell there are no tourists going to Japan and very limited business travel — our huge plane had only around 40 people on it!

行くよ！

Here we go! Look - oh so cool, huh?

日本入国は厳格です

Just how strict is Japan, you ask?

入国出来ない場合もあります

Well there are a couple countries from which you can't even get in.

出発地に応じて 3日間 隔離用ホテルで過ごす場合もあります

Then there is a long list of places where a returning resident must quarantine in a government hotel for at least 3 days

その後 自宅で14日間 隔離します

before finishing their 14 day quarantine at home.

私達は自宅隔離のみで済みます

Fortunately for us, we're on a short list of places

2週間は家で隔離です

where we should only have to quarantine at home for 2 weeks before returning to normal life.

太陽を追いかけて5時間

Well we've been following the sun for over 5 hours

まだ続きます

We just keep tracking along with it

窓を閉めないと 暗くなりません

And so it never actually gets dark outside

着陸まで明るいはずです

Just the windows get dark

By the time we touch down it will have been day the whole time.

11時間経過しました

And our time keeps ticking on

It's been over 11 hours since we left the house

Well girls, did you hear? It's 4 1/2 hours to go.

About an hour before landing, they open up the windows to let light in again.

成田での手続きは 最大6時間かかります

We've been on this flight for 12 hours now,

再度のコロナ検査

but the new COVID immigration process may take us up to 6 hours,

隔離中に使うアプリの設定

and includes a second batch of COVID tests

もうすぐ着陸！

and the installation of a couple of apps that will track our position inside Japan.

We're going to bump, it's close to the ground!

予め 家族全員の パスポートの情報を印刷しておきました

There it is! Well, was that loud?!

空港で書類に記入する時 スムーズです

What I did that really helped me was I printed out a piece of paper with all our passport names, numbers and expiration dates,

必要書類を一人ずつ ファイルに分けておきました

So I don't have to go through all the passports at the airport trying to find it. It's just all on one sheet of paper.

空港では30か所位 窓口がありますが

And if you have all this stuff already beforehand, in your hand, in a file folder,

ファイルを渡せば 窓口毎に必要な書類を確認してくれます

Then when you go to each station, which there's like 30 stations you have to go to,

スムーズに進めます

You can just hand them the file and they will look through and pull out what they need and what they want to look at.

- 手続きで2時間半かかったね - アプリも設定したよ

And it really makes things go so much smoother.

Oh, so it took us 2.5 hours just to get through the tests, installing the apps,

I did not like it.

2時間半かかりました やっと入国手続きです

The apps. Yeah, no joke. You didn't like it. Maybe the nose one was maybe better.

空港を出れるまで 更に1時間かかりました

2.5 hours. Now we get to do immigration which is everything you normally do when you get off an international flight.

大変だ！

It took us another hour of walking and immigration before we finally exited the airport and went to our car.

何とか積めました

Oh my goodness.

我が家の車だよ！ 後ろに誰か座ってる？

That is a finally packed car right there if I do say so myself.

アナ！

We are back in our car. Is there somebody back there? Who's back there? Oh!

- 大変だ！ - すごく暑い！

日本に帰って来たので 右ハンドルで左側通行です

My goodness, sweetie! It's so nice right here, it's so hot!

すぐ慣れるでしょう

We're back in Japan which means I'm driving on the other side of the car and on the other side of the road.

家まであと1時間半

So if I just keep following traffic I should be just fine.

- どれ位 経ったかな？ - 6時間？

We've got an hour and half until we get home.

- ママはどう？ - 24時間？

How much time, do you think, has passed? 6 hours?

近所の橋！ 家は目と鼻の先です！

Mommy's going to have a good guess. I'm going to say 24 hours.

- 着いたわ - 確認しよう

Oh, our bridge! You can practically see to our house, oh!

We made it. We made it, alright, let's see.

Twenty three hours and forty-three minutes.

Our tree is large and in charge, my goodness!
