so i'm  excited whenever i get a tour a traditional japanese home in kyoto

京都の伝統的な日本家屋を見学するたびにワクワクします。

known as machiya

町屋と呼ばれる

and  that's what we're doing today

and she can point out something very  specifically cool about these that we're exploring

so the owner of these properties loves Murakami Haruki

which is a famous Japanese author

and while we're doing a tour you will see the  connection between the properties and that author

to give a little background on Haruki Murakami-san  he was born january 12, 1949

sold millions of  copies

and writes with a kind of surrealistic style

と、ある種のシュールレアリスティックなスタイルで書いています。

the first time i heard about him was in  high school

初めて彼のことを知ったのは、高校生の時でした。

when a friend had told me he really enjoyed reading "Hard-boiled Wonderland"

友人が "ハードボイルド・ワンダーランド "を読んで面白かったと言っていたとき。

and "the  End of the world"

そして "世界の終わり"

it's so interesting to see that in the renovation of a home you could have the  crossroads with an author

welcome to the first room of the house guys

this is the meeting room

now some interesting details with naming

ネーミングの詳細が気になります。

there's a compound of three houses here

ここには3つの家の複合体がある

and they're called  1891

そして、1891と呼ばれています。

and that refers back to when they were first registered

そして、それは最初に登録された時にさかのぼります。

they were built before this

この前に作られた

but first  registered in the Meiji restoration

が、明治維新で初めて登録された

so that's the collective name but they actually have individual  names as well

yes so the house we're in right now is called SANAGI,

そう、今いる家は「SANAGI」という名前なんです。

and there are two properties at  the back

one is called two moons

一つは2つの月と呼ばれる

another is called AOMAME.

もう一つは「AOMAME」と呼ばれるものです。

if you notice these are three elements  from the book "1q84" which is written by Murakami Haruki

これは、村上春樹氏の著書「1q84」に出てくる3つの要素です。

let's move on from the meeting room

so cost of the  building

The compound is going for 288 million yen which converts to roughly 2.6 million us dollars

化合物の価格は2億8800万円で、約260万米ドルに相当します。

so if you got that under your mattress come get this place

and it has some really really nice features in here

so the first thing that  you would notice making it unique as to a western experience is the tatami floor

we have an antique cabinet ,we have some art  on the walls

now for me, possibly my favorite room in  a house like this

and it has some  really really cool features in here

one of the details that YEE shared with me  is that this owner really really likes art  

YEEが私に教えてくれたことは、このオーナーは本当にアートが好きなんだなということでした。

and he particularly likes art from Denmark

特にデンマークのアートが好きだとか

so  you can come into the reading room enjoy a book

読書室に入って本を楽しむことができます。

be surrounded by art from Denmark

and also enjoy a pleasant view of the adjacent garden

また、隣接する庭園の心地よい眺めも楽しめます

that is with this huge  rectangular window next to us

so this is bathroom

これがバスルーム

where you have the bath

お風呂のあるところ

you can enjoy the peak from the garden

庭園から山頂が見える

and what i like a lot is this rain shower

it's kind of rare  in MACHIYA

MACHIYAでは珍しいですよね。

and that's because the owner loves it

それは、オーナーが気に入っているからです。

the cocoon room

that is where we're going to  take you to next

and avoid bumping my head so

we have retained the original structure here

ここではオリジナルの構造を維持しています

this  is a KYO-MACHIYA that not much has been altered to make overly modern

この京町家は、あまり手を加えずに現代風にしたものです。

but this room  is a complete departure from that

が、この部屋はそれとは全くの別物

and also where we're seeing that illusion  again to the author that we mentioned

また、先ほど述べた作者の錯覚が見られるところでもあります。

so this cocoon bedroom which features the  beautiful wallpaper

美しい壁紙を使ったコクーン・ベッドルームでは

also has the characteristic of curved surfaces all over the place

いたるところに曲面があるのも特徴です。

mimicking  a cocoon

まゆをまねる

you come in here it's cozy. It feels nice

ここに来ると、居心地がいい。気持ちいいですね

that is not traditional in any  way whatsoever

いかなる方法でも伝統的ではないもの

that is where, while retaining the original structure of the building

そこには、建物のオリジナル構造を維持しながら

the designers have come in and really tried to make it its own unique space

デザイナーが入って、独自の空間を作ろうとしています。

and  one that i would feel really cozy sleeping in

そして、私が寝るときにとても快適に感じられるもの。

much like if you had gone to a bath house in  japan

日本のお風呂屋さんに行ったように

in the second floor bathroom, if you sit down there are water jets which provide  you with a back massage

2階のバスルームには、座ると背中をマッサージしてくれるジェット水流があります。

how cool is that?

かっこいいですよね

once again we find ourselves sitting in a  wonderful comfy reading chair

またしても、私たちは素晴らしい快適な読書用の椅子に座っています。

The owner really does love to read, thus the connection with the book and so on, so you can chill here next to the  cocoon bed

オーナーは本当に読書好きなので、本とのつながりなどもあり、ここではコクーンベッドの横でくつろぐことができます。

and enjoy a nice book while you're  reading

を読みながら、素敵な本を楽しむことができます。

and then over in the other direction there is some of this art from Denmark

そして、反対側にはデンマークのアートがあります。

a cool  suspension and the the colors are really neat

かっこいいサスペンションと色がとてもきれいです。

i like the fact that it actually like changes where you two sit here

私が好きなのは、お二人の居場所が実際に変わることです。

It's kind of slowly moving around

なんだかゆっくりとした動きになってしまいましたが

but definitely a peaceful room whether you're  wrapped up in the cocoon or enjoying a book

しかし、繭に包まれても、本を読んでいても、間違いなく平和な部屋です。

this is the master bedroom

これが主寝室

we have two single baths comfortably sitting here

一人用のお風呂を2つ用意しています。

and that's another reading chair

そして、それは別のリーディングチェア

and you can see beautiful garden from the window

窓からは美しい庭が見えます。

and here is what i like the most

don't make a mistake this is not sculpture

these pieces are actually from a roof

which is repurposed into the art feature

i will never get  tired of seeing the inside of these

they're always so varied

and interesting and unique

but  before we sign off

there's an interesting fact which you may not actually know about  Machiya

町屋について、意外と知られていない面白い事実があります。

Machiya can no longer be built again

町家はもう二度と建てられない

if they're torn down they're torn down forever

壊されてしまうと永遠に壊されてしまう

therefore if you stay in one or purchase one

そのため、宿泊したり購入したりすると

you actually directly contribute to retaining this  beautiful Japanese culture

この美しい日本の文化を残すことに直接貢献しているのです。

and it's actually something i would like to do one day

いつかはやってみたいと思っていたことなので

if i could  purchase and renovate one that would be a dream come true

これを購入してリフォームできたら、夢のようです。
