I got a question the other day from a student who said, 'How do I use the word "having"?'

先日、ある生徒さんから質問を受けました―「"having"って、どうやって使うんですか？」

And this is a really good question because most people know how to use the word 'have'.

これは、すごく良い質問です。大半の人は、'have' という単語の使い方を知っていますよね。

For example, 'I have a jumper" or 'I have a phone.'

例えば、「パーカーを着ています。」とか、「電話を持っています。」

But we don't really say 'I'm having a phone' or 'I'm having a jumper'.

でも、 'I'm having a phone' とか、'I'm having a jumper' とは言いませんね。

So, how do we use 'having'?

では、'having' はどうやって使うのでしょう？

One of the main uses of 'having' is when we make something happen or cause something to happen.

'having' を主に使うのは、何かを起こそうとしている時、発生させようとしている時です。

For example, 'I'm having my house painted.'

例えば、'I'm having my house painted.'（家のペンキ塗りをしてもらう。）

Who's painting the house? Me or someone else?

誰がペンキ塗りをするのでしょう？僕か他の人か？

Someone else.

他の人ですね。

What if I say 'I'm having my brother go and pick up the parcel from the post office'?

'I'm having my brother go and pick up the parcel from the post office'（兄に、郵便局で荷物を引き取ってきてもらうんだ。）と言ったら？

Who's doing it? Me or my brother?

誰がするのでしょう？僕か兄か？

My brother.

兄ですね。

Another use of 'having' is to experience something.

'having' の別の用法は、何かを経験することです。

So, for example, 'I'm having a great time at the beach right now.'

例えば、 'I'm having a great time at the beach right now.'（今ビーチで、すごく良い時間を過ごしている。）

What am I talking about? Past, present or future?

何について話していますか？過去、現在、未来？

The present.

現在ですね。

Or another example could be, 'He wasn't having much luck at the casino.'

別の例としては、'He wasn't having much luck at the casino.'（彼はカジノで、あまり運が良くなかった。）

We are talking about his experience at the casino.

彼の、カジノでの経験について話しています。

Another use of 'having' is to talk about certain things.

'having' の別の用法は、ある事柄について話すことです。

For example, if I say, 'What are you doing?', and you are eating dinner, you could say, 'I'm having dinner.'

例えば、'What are you doing?'（何してるの？）と僕が聞いたとして、あなたが夕食を食べているなら、'I'm having dinner.' と言えます。

This just means I'm eating dinner right now.

今、夕食を食べている、という意味です。

And another use of 'having' is to talk about parties.

また、パーティーについて話すときも、'having' を使えます。

For example, I could say, 'I'm having a party this weekend.'

例えば、'I'm having a party this weekend.'（今週末、パーティーをするよ）と言えます。

What am I talking about? Past, present or future?

何について話していますか？過去、現在、未来？

I'm talking about the future.

未来についてですね。

Who organised the party?

誰がパーティーを計画したのか？

Me or someone else?

僕か、他の人か？

Probably me because I said 'I'm having a party.'

おそらく僕ですね、'I'm having a party' と言いましたから。

So, these are some of the main uses of 'having'.

これが、'having' の主な用法です。

They are not all of the uses of 'having', but they are the main ones.
