and this morning I'm at Himeji station.

今朝は姫路駅の方に来ています。

I've just arrived at Himeji station.

ちょうど今着いたところです。

And for the next two nights, three days,

私はこれから２泊３日で

I'm going to be exploring the Setouchi region,

姫路から徳島、そして香川の方まで広がる、

extending from Himeji, to Tokushima, to Kagawa.

瀬戸内地方の方を探索していきます。

And I'm so excited because this is an area

ここは普段は福岡市からは

that I don't actually get to visit very easily

あまり簡単に訪れることができない場所だから

from Fukuoka City.

とても楽しみです。

It's a little bit far.

距離としてはちょっと遠いです。

the second largest city in Hyogo Prefecture.

兵庫県で２番目に大きな都市です。

It is home of what is said to be

日本全国において

one of the most beautiful and picturesque castles

最も美しく、映える城である

in all of Japan.

姫路城で有名な場所です。

All right, so right behind me, is Himeji Castle,

はい、今私の後ろに見えるのが姫路城です

and although it looks like it is immediately behind me

すぐそこにあるように見えますが、 それはお城自体が本当に大きいからであり、

it's still quite a ways away because this castle is huge.

実際にはまだここから結構遠くにあるんですよ。

The castle grounds are massive.

This area is now a UNESCO world heritage site.

And it's absolutely gorgeous.

The castle has since been restored.

The last time I came here, it was still under construction

but it's gorgeous.

I can't wait to see what's changed.

When you look at it like this

is all the way down at the end of this street.

It's crazy to think that Himeji Castle

姫路城が

used to encompass all of this area

この二つの駅の間全体を

in between the station here.

包囲していたと考えるとびっくりです。

That's a large amount of land.

相当な広さですよ。

Because of its elegant white towering presence in the city,

この市において白くエレガントの聳え立つその様子から

Himeji Castle is also affectionately referred to

姫路城は「白鷺城」や「ホワイトヘロン城」

as Shirasagijo or White Heron Castle.

という名前でも親しまれています。

If you come on a bright and sunny day

明るく、晴れた日に訪れると、その白い壁が

the white walls seem to illuminate the entire city.

市全体を明るく照らしているようにも見えます。

And while the main attraction is the castle itself,

So now we're heading towards the Island of Shikoku

次に、淡路島という島を通って、

through an Island called Awajishima.

四国に向かっていきます。

So on our way, we make a brief stop at Honpukuji Temple,

そしてその途中にまず本福寺に寄り道していきます。

a gorgeously designed temple

こちらの華麗にデザインされたお寺は

by the famous architect Ando Tadao,

有名建築家の安藤忠雄さんによって デザインされました。

who decided it should be located underground,

彼はこのお寺を、本物の蓮の池の下、

underneath a fully functioning lotus pond.

地下の方に建てたのです。

You come down the stairs and then from here

この階段を下に降りていくと、

it's like an underground regular shrine.

なんとこうして普通にお寺が現れてきます。

Unfortunately,

残念ながら、

photography is not permitted inside the temple

こちらの境内では撮影が許されていませんが、

but let me just say, it's impressive underground too.

言わせていただくと、地下自体も非常に見事です。

So this morning, we started in Hyogo Prefecture

今朝、兵庫県を出発したわけですが、

and now we're crossing over to Tokushima Prefecture

これから淡路島を越えて

through Awajishima.

徳島県に入っていきます。

Awaji Island, which is a little island

淡路島は小さな島であり、

that connects, I guess, Kobe, Osaka, Hyogo, Himeji

神戸や大阪、兵庫、姫路などと

with Shikoku, the Islands of Shikoku.

四国を結びます。

Awajishima is apparently famous for its onions

どうやら淡路島は玉ねぎが有名なようで、

which I had never heard of until today, but I believe them.

私も今日初めて聞いたのですが、私は本当だと信じますよ。

And this onion burger

そしてこちらのオニオンバーガーが

is supposed to be one of the best burgers in Japan.

どうやら日本で有数の絶品バーガーらしいので、

So I can't wait to give it a try.

Hmm, there's nothing like

凄く美味しく、厚くて、ジューシーな

a really good, thick, juicy sweet onion

甘い玉ねぎが真ん中に入ったバーガーほど

in the middle of a burger.

美味しいものはないですね。

And the fact that it's deep fried, ugh!

その上に玉ねぎがよく揚げされてるなんて、最高！

This is so, so naughty, but it's so good.

いやこれはもはや犯罪だけど超美味しいですね。

Over a large bridge, we depart Awajishima

大きな橋を渡って淡路島を抜け、

and cross the Naruto Strait

鳴門海峡を渡って

into Tokushima Prefecture, on the Island of Shikoku.

四国の徳島県へ入っていきます。

Once you make it to the other side of this bridge

橋の反対側に着いたら、

you can park and enter a walkway underneath the bridge.

車を駐めて、橋の下の通路へ入ることができます。

Keeping an eye on the turbulent waters below,

ここでは目下の乱流を見ることができ、

you might even catch a glimpse

もしかすると、タイミングさえ合えば

of one of the famous Naruto Whirlpools

かの有名な鳴門の渦潮を

if you arrive at the right time of day.

目にすることができるかもしれません。

Unfortunately we were just a little bit too late

残念ながら私たちは若干訪れるのが遅く、

to see them ourselves.

Okay, so now we are in Tokushima in Naruto City,

はい、今私たちは鳴門市の

and we are at Monzen Ichibangai

門前一番街に来ています。

which is the first stop on the pilgrimage around Shikoku.

こちらは四国八十八か所の 第一番の巡礼地です。

The history of this pilgrimage dates back over 1,200 years.

この巡礼の起源は１２００年前にまで 遡り、

And to this day,

今日まで大勢の人々が

many people come to Shikoku to challenge it.

巡礼に挑戦しにやってきて、

Offering prayers to the gods along the way.

神様へのお祈りを唱えながら回っていきます。

So people who normally embark on this pilgrimage,

通常、この巡礼に乗り出す人々は

they're gonna go to 88 different locations across Shikoku

四国中にある計八十八箇所のお寺を回り、

and it usually takes about 40 days.

全て回り終えるまで４０日ほどかかるそうです。

That's incredible.

本当にビックリですよね。

It would take incredible willpower, which I do not have.

相当な意志が必要しょうね、私にはありませんがね

So we are just gonna go to one or two spots today

なので日が暮れる前に今日は １、２箇所ほど回って

before the sun goes down and just see what it's like,

巡礼することがどんな感じなのかを

get a little taste of the pilgrimage before it gets dark.

All right, we've made it to the second stop

はーい、２箇所に渡った体験版巡礼地の

along our two stop pilgrimage.

２箇所目着きました。

This is location number two, if you're going all the way

こちらが８８箇所ある中で

to the 88 different shrines, this would be the second one.

たった２箇所目のお寺になるということですね。

There are actually no rules

実際、巡礼をどのようにして行うかに関しては

to how you complete a pilgrimage.

特に決まりはないそうです。

Whether you do it on foot by bicycle or by car is up to you.

徒歩で回るか、自転車や車で回るかは あなた次第です。

This might be a fun way to spend an early summer in Shikoku.

これは初夏の四国を楽しむのに 良いかもしれませんね。

As you know, traveling in recent times

皆さんもご存知の通り、最近は

has been really hard.

旅行をすることが非常に困難ですが、

But hotels are doing everything they can

そんな時期においても

to stay afloat and accommodate guests,

So something interesting that I learned last night

ところで、昨晩初めて知った興味深いことは

was that Tokushima-ken,

徳島県というのは

the prefecture of Tokushima

実は以前は阿波とも

is actually also formerly called Awa.

呼ばれてたということです。

The traditional name is Awa.

伝統的な地名は「阿波」だそうです。

And Awa Odori is this traditional dance

そして阿波踊りというのは

that's usually performed at festivals

この徳島県において、お祭りなどで 見られる

here in the Tokushima area.

伝統的な踊りです。

But if you come to Tokushima during a non festival time

しかし、祭りが行われていない時期に

when there's not much going on

こちらを訪れた場合でも

you can still catch the dancers here

こちらの阿波踊り会館にて

at the Awaodori Kaikan

その様子を見ることができるみたいなので

which is what we're gonna do right now.

今から見に行こうと思います。

After checking out the Awaodori Museum,

阿波踊り博物館に寄った後で

we headed up to the theater

私たちは劇場の方へと向かい、

and watched a 40 minute Awaodori show.

４０分間の阿波踊りショーを見ました。

With nonstop energy and vibrant costumes,

そのノンストップなエネルギーと鮮やかな衣装は

this was a great way to take a break before a very busy day.

忙しい日の前の息抜きにピッタリでした。

There are four daytime performances

このショーは日中に４回、

and one night type performance.

夜に１回行われています。

So if you're in the city and it fits into your schedule,

definitely drop by.

From the fifth floor of the Awaodori Kaikan,

阿波踊り会館の５階からは

you can take a cable car

なんと徳島市にある

all the way up to the top of Mount Bizan,

小さな山である眉山の頂上まで

a small mountain in Tokushima City

ケーブルカーで上ることができ、

that offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the entire area.

頂上からはとても美しい 辺り一帯景色を見渡すことができます。

On a clear sunny day,

空気の澄んだ晴れた日には

you can see back towards Awaji Island

淡路島どころか

and the main Island Honshu.

本州まで目にすることができます。

It's a great way to get some fresh air

新鮮な空気を味わって

and recalibrate your bearings.

気分転換をするのに最適です。

Now, today we're leaving Tokushima City

今日はこれから徳島市を出て

and we're heading towards Kagawa Prefecture.

香川県へ向かっていきます。

But first we have to stop for some lunch.
