If you find yourself saying any of these words, stop and think again.

もしこれらの言葉を使っていることに気付いたら、ストップ！少し考えてみてください。

They're not actually English.

これらは実際には英語ではありません。

They're Japanese.

日本語なんです。

Of course, the main reason for this confusion is that there are actually many words written in Katakana that are English.

もちろん、この間違いの主な原因はカタカナで書かれた英単語が実際にたくさんあることです。

Tomato, camera, orange, yoghurt...

トマト、カメラ、オレンジ、ヨーグルト…

but the Japanese words I'm going to show you today are almost completely different to the English word.

しかし、今日扱う日本語は英語とは全然違います。

Let's look at some.

いくつか見てみましょう。

We'll start with this tool.

それではこの道具から始めましょう。

In Japanese it's called pench

日本語ではペンチと呼ばれますが

but in English, it's called pliers.

英語では pliers と呼ばれます。

Pench sounds a little like the English word pinch, which is what these do when they come together.

ペンチは pinch に少し似ていてこれは何かを挟んだり、つまむ動作を意味します。

They pinch the material this action.

ペンチはこの挟む動きで何かものを掴みますよね。こんな感じです。

You can also pinch your brother or sister when they're being annoying.

もしくは兄弟の誰かがうるさいときに、彼らををつまむかもしれません。

Pinch.

こんな風に。

So perhaps that's where the confusion comes from.

おそらくそれが間違いの原因です。

As a side note, pliers is also plural so it has an s on the end.

ちなみに pliers は常に複数形の単語なので末尾に必ずsを付けます。

This is similar to trousers, scissors...

これはズボン、はさみ...

pants.

パンツと同じです。

Now, you may think that a scarf is a  kind of light material like this maybe.

スカーフはこのような軽い素材のものだと思われるかもしれません。

In fact, this and this one are both scarf.

でも実際は、これとこれは両方ともスカーフです。

The one you're wearing around your neck right now, that's a scarf. 100%.

今あなたが首に巻いているのは

We don't say muffler in England.

スカーフです。 間違いなく。

In fact, I've never heard it.

イギリスではマフラーとは言いません。

I did a little research online and found out that muffler is actually just an old-fashioned word that we don't use anymore.

実際、私は聞いたことがありません。ネット で 少し調べてみたら マフラーっていうのは

So it's best to refer to both things as scarf.

今は使っていない古い言葉のようです。

This might be a little surprising.

つまり、両方をスカーフと呼ぶのがベストです。

Of course, this is bottle in English but we don't call it a PET bottle.

これは少し意外かもしれません。もちろん、これは英語で bottle ですが

In fact, the first time I heard PET bottle, I thought we were talking about a bottle for a pet like a dog or a cat.

ペットボトルとは呼ばないです。実際初めてペットボトルと聞いたとき 、ペット用のボトルの話だと思いました。

You know, a pet's bottle.

犬とか猫用のね。

But I soon realized that PET stands for what it's made from.

つまり、ペット（用）ボトル？

Polyethylene terephthalate.

だけどすぐに、PET がその素材を意味していることに気づきました。

We also named the bottle after the material but we chose the much simpler word, plastic.

ポリエチレンテレフタレート。英語でもこの素材にちなんだ名前を使うこともありますが

Plastic bottle.

もっと簡単な単語を使います。プラスチック。

So, while they're terrible for the environment, if you do need to talk about this you should use the word plastic bottle.

プラスチックボトル。プラスチックは環境に有害なものですが これについて英語で話す必要があれば

Surely this one is English.

プラスチックボトルという言葉を使う　必要があります。

Actually, no.

これは間違いなく英語...?

Sha-pen sounds like two English words put together

実はこれも違います。

sharp and pen.

シャーペンは、 ２つの単語を組み合わせたものに聞こえます。

Sharp makes sense because these kind of pencils are always kept sharp.

sharp と pen。sharp は意味が分かります

You don't need to use a sharpener.

なぜなら、先が常に鋭く（シャープに）保たれているからです。

But pen has a totally different meaning in English.

鉛筆削り機が必要ないくらいに。

しかし、pen というのは英語では全く異なる意味を持っています。

They're very different.

ペンと鉛筆

So, in primary school we'll use a pencil from about ages 6 to 12 and then in secondary school from 12 years old onwards we switch to pens.

これらは全然違います。小学校では鉛筆を使います。大体6歳から12歳くらいの間です。

So, ballpoint or ink pens.

そして中学校、つまり 12 歳頃からペンに切り替えます。

So, actually we don't use mechanical pencils often.

ボールペンやインクペンのことです。

People usually just use an ordinary pencil.

だから実際にシャーペンはあまり使いません。

The word manto comes from the English word mantle.

普通の鉛筆を使うことが多いです。

So, it is English.

マントという言葉は英語のマントルに由来します。

Not exactly.

だから、これは英語...

Mantle is a very old-fashioned word that nobody uses anymore and actually I'd never heard of it.

そうでもないかな。マントルはとても古い言葉で、もう誰も使っていません。

It may come up in old literature or old novels but in daily life and conversation, I think not many people would know what you meant if you called this mantle.

実際、聞いたことがありません。もしかしたら古い文書や小説に出てくるかもしれませんが 日常生活や会話では使いません。

Instead, we use the widely known cape as in for the short ones or cloak for the much longer ones.

マントルと言って分かる人はあまりいないと思います。代わりに、cape が広く使われています。これは短いマントのことです。
