I am here in Adelaide, [アデレード ゴール地点] where the World Solar Challenge 2019 will end. It has been quite the journey. [番組ホスト デレク・ミューラー] And some of the most harsh, deadliest landscape on Earth. 地球上で最も過酷な地帯を駆け抜けたよ 300 kilometers up the road ゴールまで 300キロの地点から― at the final control stop, 上位3チームが 前日のタイムに基づき発進します the top three teams are starting 1位スタートはバッテンフォール based on their arrival times yesterday. アデレードまで全力で疾走する [COUNTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE] 負ける気はないわ DEREK: Defending champions Vattenfall アゴリアは1位と わずか2分差です are first out of the gate. We're just gonna go. We're planning 落ち着いて挑めば勝てるチャンスはあると思う not to be overtaken. 東海大学は2位のアゴリアと19分差 DEREK: Team Agoria from Belgium 優勝圏内にいます is only two minutes behind Vattenfall. 彼らは粘り強く 7位から3位へ 追い上げてきました DEREK: Team Tokai is starting 19 minutes behind Agoria, エネルギーは十分ある but can't be counted out of the running. They've been gaining relentlessly ゴールまで全力で飛ばすつもりだ over the last two days, moving from seventh to third. We have enough energy for the car to make it in. In fact, we have too much energy [暫定4位 ミシガン] because of the speed restrictions yesterday. So we'll be going at full speed こちらも優勝圏内です all the way into the finish line. The Japanese... They just keep increasing the speed every day, 先頭集団はポート・オーガスタ付近にいる and I think they're making some of these European guys nervous. [ミシガン ザック・ゴールドスミス] DEREK: In fourth position, the American team, Michigan, そこで過剰に競り合ってくれたら― is still within striking distance. They're about 90 kilometers back. [暫定1位 バッテンフォール] We don't know exactly where all the vehicles are. [暫定2位 アゴリア] Um, but we did hear that they're pretty packed together 東海大学が早くも追い上げます near Port Augusta. [暫定3位 東海大学] Um, we're hoping that means they over-race a little bit, でも上位者を侮ることはできません and they try to, um, do lots of passes today, バッテンフォールは過去に何度も優勝しています and hopefully, maybe we can close some ground. DEREK: Back up front, Tokai is already making up time. [バッテンフォール ウィレム・イェル・ベリンガ] But you can never underestimate the reigning champions. Vattenfall has won seven of the last nine races here. バッテンフォールは前にいるけど― WILLEM: Our car's looking really good. But there are, right now, a lot of good cars. Also, the Belgium team. It's also a very good car. DEREK: In the final leg of a solar car race, ただバッテリー残量が少ない場合は危険です teams use as much battery as they can マシンの限界に挑戦するんだ to sprint into the finish. [ミシガン ベネット・マクグレード] But if a battery's charge gets too low, 電池が残り少なくなると― this can be dangerous. So everyone's pushing the limits of their cars and their packs, バッテリーが熱を持つ and so, if you start getting towards the low-end of the pack バッテリーは熱を持つと危険です where you're running out of energy and, kind of, 無事でよかった pushing it a bit further, スタンフォードが経験しました your battery can start getting a bit hot. DEREK: When batteries heat up, 安全のため スピードには要注意です they can become unstable... [SOBBING] I'm so glad you're okay. 僕らの優勝は彼らのバッテリーにかかってる ...as the Stanford team found out 右側から偵察しよう on the first day of the race. 了解 Move back! Everyone... DEREK: To stay safe, teams with low battery レース終了間近ですが 首位を奪えるでしょうか must watch their speed. バッテンフォールを抜くのは緊張する [JASPER SPEAKING] [アゴリア セドリック・ロバート] MAN: Yeah, I'll just sneak out to the right side. DEREK: With nearly a full battery, [アゴリア スパイ車両] Agoria is slowly gaining on Vattenfall. But with only a few hours left in the race, [アゴリア マイケル・フィーズ] it's not clear they'll have enough time どうもマシンを側道に寄せたらしい to catch the leader. We heard over the comms of Delft that something happened. [暫定1位 バッテンフォール] Had to go to the side of the road, マシンを側道へ寄せた理由は明白です but I don't... I'm not sure why. Uh, so we'll be merging behind their convoy, - 止めて - 了解 and then monitor their speeds. DEREK: Up ahead, the reason Vattenfall たぶんね is pulling over becomes painfully clear, 大変だ as their cabin fills with smoke. ウソだろ -MAN 1: Stand by. -MAN 2: We have stopped. DEREK: In a matter of seconds, みんな 落ち込んでるけど Team Vattenfall's dreams are fully ablaze... 支え合って 前向きに乗り越えようとしてる and the finality is inescapable. MAUD: This morning, we thought we were gonna finish first, 他のチームを抜く時に― and now we have no car to cross the finish line with. Uh, the whole team's quite devastated about it. So we try to push each other [アゴリア ヤンテ・ファン・ハム] through this experience and try and stay positive, 彼らが本当に気の毒だった but it's very, uh, difficult to, あんなこと誰の身にも起きてほしくない with everything you've worked for is, sort of, gone. [アゴリア 先導車] DEREK: As the Vattenfall car is reduced to nothing but ash, 指令車の先を走る“スパイ車両”では Agoria passes by and into the lead. The moment you pass another car 煙が見える being broken or facing something very difficult, ウソだろ the first thought is always, "Is the pilot okay?" And then, it hits you like, "Oh, it's their work." And it... You started... I felt sick. I felt sick and, like, "Oh, it's terrible for them." And... Yeah, it's such a weird... Yeah. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. DEREK: Up ahead of the leaders, [アゴリア フィリップ・ゲプツ] Agoria's "eyes" car or scout vehicle [バッテンフォール 脱落] reacts to Vattenfall's fate on social media. アゴリアが首位に躍り出て 東海大学は2位に -You see the smoke? -What? [1位 アゴリア 2位 東海大学] CEDRIC: What? [BLEEP] [暫定2位 東海大学] [YANTE SPEAKING] 幸運に恵まれたベルギーチームに― So we are in first position right now. DEREK: With Agoria taking over the lead, 向こうはパワー全開だけど こっちは安全走行だ Tokai moves into second place. 1時間遅れで― While the Belgians have had a remarkable stroke of luck, ミシガンが ポート・オーガスタへ they're now being hunted down by the team from Japan. DEREK: An hour back from the leaders, [暫定3位 ミシガン] Michigan is arriving at the final control stop, 今朝は4位で今は3位だ Port Augusta. With Vattenfall out of the race, 2日前 彼らの先導車が 東海大学の進路を妨害 they've moved into the top three. ANDREW: We started this morning in fourth place. We're now in third. DEREK: But there's one major factor 判断はまだ下っていません that could still keep Michigan from a podium finish. Two days ago, their lead car blocked Tokai from passing, [ミシガン アンドリュー・ディキンソン] a possible violation of race rules. DEREK: Tokai lodged a complaint with race officials, 規定の罰則はレースからの一時退場です but the jury is still out. 大会側の判断によっては 後続のトップダッチと― ANDREW: We didn't know if there was a penalty [暫定4位 トップダッチ] related to the driving conduct of some vehicles. Uh, and that was... It was pretty frustrating. DEREK: In the World Solar Challenge, おい 何なんだよ penalties are levied as forced time-outs from the race. If officials decide to rule against Michigan, 首位のアゴリアと東海大学の時間差は わずか15分ほどです it could allow the car behind them, Top Dutch, 工事現場で足止めされると 追いつかれてしまうので― to catch up and knock them out of third place. ANDREW: Our strategy will not change as a result of this. ソーラーカーの集団が来るんだけど 待たせずに― And the best way to win is to just focus on your own car - 通してくれる? MAN: Holy... [BLEEP] What's down here? ありがとう [SPEAKING GERMAN] [暫定3位 ミシガン] DEREK: Agoria's lead on Tokai is very slim. 上位に入るには― Now just 15 minutes separates the front two cars, [ミシガン バッセル・ヤシン] and roadwork is just the kind of complication 限界を超えなきゃ that could bring Tokai right behind them. So they look for a little help from the crew. [暫定1位 アゴリア] Okay, cool. -Thanks a lot. If we are gonna end up catching, [暫定2位 東海大学] um, some of the teams in front of us, 東海大学が通る頃には重機がどかされ we're gonna have to push our car to the limit. Who knew that the competition 首位に迫ります was gonna be the hardest we've ever faced. [ゴールまで16キロ] But you never know what's gonna happen on this last day. 交通量の多い街に入ると 一般車両と走ることになる [INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER RADIO] [東海大学 シッド・ビッカナーバー] DEREK: Despite talking to the flagman, リスクが高くなるね Agoria still has to slow down すごいストレスだよ to safely pass through the construction, アデレードは交通量が多いので難所になる losing valuable time. DEREK: But by the time Tokai reaches the block, 街の中心へ向かうアゴリア the heavy equipment has cleared... 東海大学は すぐ後ろに迫っています -and they sail right through... -[MAN SPEAKING JAPANESE] 果たして 残り2キロで首位を奪えるでしょうか ...closing in on the leader. アゴリアが信号に捕まらない限り 東海大学が勝つ見込みはなさそうです [MAN SPEAKING JAPANESE] [ゴール地点] SIDD: As we get into these more dense areas of the city, ゴール手前の最後の交差点です we'll be sharing the road with all the normal traffic. That, to me, is a lot riskier. It's really stressful for us. [KOUHEI SPEAKING] [アデレード ゴール地点] DEREK: As both teams battle their way to the city center, [1位 アゴリア] Tokai is closing in, just minutes behind. So, the question is, can they catch them 言葉が出ないよ with only two kilometers to go? As the final minutes of the race tick away, Tokai's only chance of catching up ここまでの3,021キロを走りきるため is if Agoria gets snagged in the traffic lights. But at the last intersection before the finish line at Bragg Park... Okay. What just happened? We became World Champion! It's like... I have no words for it. What is the event to you? The event's a challenge. [2位 東海大学 合計タイム 35:04:00] It's a challenge to get here, 3,021 kilometers, ものすごくハイレベルな戦いだった and if you get it, you already win, 最後まで走りきれて よかった and then, the second thing is getting first. 表彰台は最高だ -And that's what we saw today. After crossing the official finish line in Bragg Park... 大会スタッフです both teams move to the red carpet celebrations here, 停車させるよう指示があった in Victoria Square. It feels amazing. We worked so hard for this, ミシガンの罰則が決まったようです and now we've made it, and we're in first place. So much time and effort put into this car. So much friendships that were put on the line. But it was all... Every single second of it was worth it. The level of the competition was so high, 続いてトップダッチ with all the high-performing machines, 工学院!工学院! and a lot of top cars didn't survive the event. So we're happy to finish, ゾネンバーグンは― and we're even happier to be on the podium. DEREK: Back at Bragg Park, Team Michigan is arriving. DEREK: But inches before the finish line... まるでアクション映画のスターだ [MAN SPEAKING] すばらしい冒険でした ...they're stopped by race officials. “チャレンジャークラス優勝” [MAN SPEAKING] “アゴリア” DEREK: The final judgement on Michigan's penalty has come down. DEREK: They'll need to sit out an hour ここで表彰されるのが夢だった before they can finish the race. We had to serve some penalties. Uh, and that was, uh... It was pretty frustrating, マシンだけの戦いじゃない especially on the... We questioned the basis of some of the penalties, 仲間の努力や献身もあった and in the end, they didn't affect the placement, but, uh... That actually... You know, I'm not gonna talk about it. DEREK: Michigan is followed by Top Dutch... レースは終わりですが― ...and then Sonnenwagen, マシンの最先端技術は この先もずっと磨かれていきます who, despite their terrible crash, どの技術が市場に導入されるのか楽しみです were still able to finish in an astonishing sixth place. CEDRIC: So before joining the Solar team, 私は みんなの力で地球温暖化問題を 解決できると信じてる uh, every one of us was just, uh, - ありがとう - おめでとう a normal engineering student. Some kinds of nerds. And now, when you see this challenge, 2019年の勝者はアゴリアでした um, it's crazy to see that we have become きっといつか我々も レースの恩恵にあずかれるでしょう like action movie stars. WILLEM-JAN: What an incredible journey has it been? I think we learnt why the organization called it a challenge and not a race. Every team kept their head up, and that is something everybody should be proud of. [APPLAUSE] I'm also very proud of my team. We always dreamed of this trophy, and now people will say, "You have to beat the Belgians "to get that trophy," and it's not, "You have to beat the Dutch." [AUDIENCE APPLAUDING] YANTE: There's so much more to this race than just a car. There's a whole game of strategy and sacrifices and hard-work and dedication of so many different people. It's... It's... It's special. Everyone's so dedicated and just going for it with every single fiber in their bodies just pointed towards that first place. DEREK: The race has come to a close. But the cutting-edge tech that went into the cars will be analyzed and perfected for years to come. Time will tell which of these innovations will be adopted by the market. But technology from past events has been game-changing. -Yeah. Thank you. -Congratulations. Yes. DEREK: Agoria might have won the race, but all of us might, one day, reap the rewards of this year's World Solar Challenge. [CHEERING AND APPLAUDING]
