In this video, I'm going to tell you about countable and uncountable nouns.

It's very important to know the difference between countable and uncountable nouns in

Countable nouns are nouns that you can count.

数えることができる名詞とは、数えることができる名詞のことです。

Uncountable nouns are nouns that you cannot count.

数えられない名詞とは、数えられない名詞のことです。

They're usually a type or a group.

普通にタイプかグループなんだよね。

And they're always singular.

そして、彼らは常に単数である。

Let's look at a few examples.

いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

Countable nouns – you can say, “a dog.”

数えることができる名詞-"犬 "と言ってもいいでしょう。

You can say, “one dog,” “two dogs,” “three dogs,” and so on.

You can say, “a man.”

"男 "と言えばいい

“Idea.”

You can say, “one idea,” “two ideas,” and so on.

Again, you can say, “one computer, two computers.”

もう一度言うが、"1台のコンピュータ、2台のコンピュータ "と言ってもいい。

And, “house.”

そして、"家"。

Well, you can say, “one house, two houses, three houses,” and so on.

まあ、「一軒家、二軒家、三軒家」などと言ってもいいでしょう。

These are countable nouns.

これらは数えられる名詞です。

You can count them.

数えることができます。

But if we look at uncountable nouns.

しかし、数えきれないほどの名詞を見てみると

When you say, “water.”

"水 "と言ったら

You can't say, “One water, two waters.”

"一水二水 "とは言えないわね

It doesn't make any sense.

意味がないんだよ。

You cannot count water.

水を数えることはできません。

Same goes for air.

空気も同じ。

You can't say, “one air, two airs.”

"1つの空気、2つの空気 "とは言えません。

It's just 'air'.

ただの「空気」です。

It's uncountable.

数えられない

'traffic' 'English'

トラフィック

'Equipment' These are all uncountable nouns.

'装備' これらはすべて不計数名詞です。

You cannot count them And they're always singular.

数えることはできないし、いつも単数形だ。

Okay, guys.

Now, let's take a closer look at rules with countable nouns and uncountable nouns.

それでは、数えられる名詞と数えられない名詞のルールを詳しく見ていきましょう。

So how do we know if a word is countable or uncountable?

では、どのようにして単語が数えられるか数えられないかを知ることができるのでしょうか？

Well there are a few tricks that can help.

さて.........いくつかのトリックがあります。

Let's look at these words.

この言葉を見てみましょう。

Some groups of words are very often uncountable.

いくつかの単語のグループは、非常に多くの場合、カウントされないことがあります。

And this can help you.

For example, liquids.

Water, juice, milk, beer.

All those words are uncountable.

Powders.

Sugar, flour, salt, rice.

Uncountable words as well.

Materials.

Such as wood, plastic, metal, or paper.

And finally, abstract ideas.

Like time, information, love, and beauty.

Another trick is that most of the time, you can measure uncountable nouns.

もう一つのコツは、ほとんどの場合、数えられない名詞を測ることができるということです。

Let's look at examples.

例を見てみましょう。

For example, if we take liquids.

例えば、液体を取ると

I have two liters of milk.

牛乳を2リットル持っています。

Now, you cannot count milk.

さて、牛乳は数えることができません。

But you can measure milk.

でも、牛乳は測れます。

And you can count liters.

リットルも数えることができます。

So you can say, “I have two liters of milk.”

"２リットルの牛乳がある "と言えばいいのね

You can say, “I have a glass of water.”

"水を一杯飲んだ "と言えばいい。

Or “I have glasses of water.”

"水のグラスを持っている "とか

“Cups of coffee.”

"コーヒーを一杯"

“Bottles of water.”

"水のボトル"

So you can measure this uncountable noun.

なので、この不特定多数の名詞を測ることができます。

Same goes with powders.

パウダーも同じです。

“I have one kilogram of sugar.”

"私は砂糖を１キロ持っている"

“Two kilograms of sugar.”

"２キロの砂糖"

With materials and foods, we often use the word, 'piece'.

素材や食品では、「ピース」という言葉をよく使います。

For example, “I ate two pieces of cake.”

例えば、"ケーキを2個食べた "とか。

Or bread.

もしくはパン。

Or pizza.

ピザとか

Or meat.

肉でも。

Or cheese.

もしくはチーズ。

“I need pieces of paper.”

"紙切れが必要だ"

Wood.

ウッドだ

Plastic.

プラスチックだ

Metal.

金属製だ

Or “I have some water.”

"水がある "とか

'Some' is an article that always works with uncountable nouns.

'some'は、数えきれないほどの名詞に必ず効く冠詞です。

Ok guys, I hope you understand.

みんな、わかってくれるといいんだけど

Let's move on.

先に進みましょう。

Some words can be both countable and uncountable nouns.

単語の中には、数えられる名詞と数えられない名詞があります。

Now not all of them.

今は全員ではありません。

But some of them.

しかし、その中には

Let's take a look.

見てみましょう。

“I would like to eat some cake.”

"ケーキが食べたい"

“I would like two pieces of cake.”

"ケーキを2つ食べたい"

So in these two sentences, 'cake' is obviously and uncountable noun.

ですから、この2つの文章では、「ケーキ」は明らかに不可算名詞です。

But if I say, “I would like to eat two cakes.”

でも、"ケーキを2つ食べたい "と言ったら

Suddenly, it becomes a countable noun.

突然、数えられる名詞になります。

Why?

なぜ？

Because in the first two sentences, we are talking about pieces of one cake.

なぜなら、最初の2文では、1つのケーキのかけらの話をしているからです。

In the last sentence, we are considering the whole cake.

最後の一文では、ホールケーキを考えています。

So it becomes countable.

だからカウント可能になる。

Another example.

別の例です。

“I would like to eat some chicken.”

"チキンが食べたい"

“I would like to eat a piece of chicken.”

"チキンを食べたい"

Both sentences, uncountable noun, 'chicken'.

両文、不可算名詞「鶏肉」。

But the last sentence, “I see two chickens.”

でも最後の一文、"ニワトリが2羽見える"

Hmm, 'chicken', in this case, is a countable noun.

うーん、この場合の「鶏肉」は可算名詞ですね。

Why?

なぜ？

Because in the first two sentences, 'chicken' is food.

なぜなら、最初の二文で「鶏肉」は食べ物だからです。

But in the last sentence, 'chicken' is an animal.

しかし、最後の一文で「鶏」は動物です。

So the animal is a countable noun.

つまり、動物は数えられる名詞ということですね。

'Chicken' as food is uncountable.

食べ物としての「鶏肉」は数えるほどもありません。
