Couple of months ago a friend told me,

数ヶ月前に友人が私に教えてくれました

something really special happens here in Aomori

ここ青森では特別なことが起きているそうです

and I came here for this report

それを探しにここに来ました

Behind me a bunch of professionals clean the runway

後ろでは多くのプロが滑走路をキレイにしてます

like no other place in the world

他の国では見られない方法です

They even have a name

そして名前まであります

White Impulse

ホワイト・インパルス

It starts early in the morning as the division leader

朝早く総括班長が

gets a runway report

滑走路の報告と

and orders from the airport

空港から指示を受けます

35 plows attack the runway with a clear mission

明確な使命をもって３５台の重機が滑走路に向かいます

remove the snow so a flight can land

飛行機が着陸できるように雪を除去するのです

Aomori Airport's runway is 3000 meters long

青森空港の滑走路は３０００ｍ

but they also need to plow the apron and the taxi way

しかしながら誘導路とエプロン部分も除雪する必要があります

The cleanup seems like a choreographed like ballet of machines

まるで機械のバレーの演技を見ているかのようです

Each plow or truck has its specific purpose

それぞれの重機には役割があります

Together as a team,

チーム一丸となって

they can clear the runway in 40 minutes

滑走路を約４０分でキレイにできます

Meanwhile, in the air is JAL flight 141

一方でＪＡＬ１４１便が３０分で

a Boeing 737 from Tokyo inbound for Aomori in 30 minutes

青森空港に到着する用意をしていました

White Impulse is on it

ホワイトインパルスは奮闘中です

despite heavy snow and near white out conditions,

深雪とホワイトアウトに近い状況下ですが

The runway is in plain sight again

滑走路は着陸体制に着々となっています

Believe it or not, Aomori Airport has never had a cancelled flight

信じられないかもしれませんが青森空港は雪を理由に

due to snow

着陸を断ったことはありません

Any cancellation happens on the other end of the flight

雪でのキャンセルは離陸側の空港では起きるかもしれませんが

not here in Aomori

青森ではありません

It's easy to be inspired watching the machines working together

重機が連携して動く様子を見るだけでワクワクします

something each member is proud of

各隊員が誇りをもってやっています

The flight is just 15 minutes out now

後１５分で着陸です

Aomori Prefecture is entirely covered in snow

青森県は雪で覆われています

Everywhere except the airport

滑走路だけは別です

JAL flight 141 is on approach now

ＪＡＬ１４１便が着率体制に入りました

Has White Impulse completed the mission?

ホワイト・インパルスは任務を完了したでしょうか？

A final inspection requires ground crew

最後の点検にはグラウンドのクルーが必要です

Any ice or debris that could threaten a landing

着陸に支障の出る氷や障害物が取り除かれます

is shoveled and removed

シャベルで取り除かれます

and there they are for the last sweep and plow

そして最後の除雪が行われます

Mission Complete

The team returns to home base

チームが基地に戻ります

as another flight readies for departure,

そして別の便が用意します

now with a clear runway to the sky

除雪された滑走路が用意できています

The final truck has safely returned

The airplane has the go ahead to land

飛行機に着陸の許可が下ります

It's another perfect landing

完璧な着陸です

thanks to the team

The fleet of machines standing tall and proud

連隊が誇り高く並んでいます

saluting the pilots and passengers as the plane taxis by

飛行機が誘導路に入る中でパイロットと乗客を迎え入れます

White Impulse is standing by for the next mission

Outbound to Osaka, another perfect takeoff

大阪行が見事な離陸を魅せます

AIRPORT SNOWPLOW EQUIPTMENT OVERLOAD

連隊の様子を見る機会がありました

I got a close look at the fleet of plows

３８機すべてです

all 38 of them

すべてが稼働します

Each one is put to the test

１０月終盤から３月まで

from late October to March

青森の雪シーズン中です

during the snow season in Aomori

こちらは雪を砕いて横に掃けます

This one breaks up the snow and launches it to the side

こちらのスパゲティみたいなブラシで滑走路の掃除をします

This one sweeps the runway with bristles

今シーズンはたくさん使われたのが分かります

that look like dried spaghetti

そしてブラシは取り替える必要があります

You can see that it's been used a lot this season

この重機のカーブは雪を吹き飛ばします

and the bristles need to be replaced

各重機が連隊の一部として各々の仕事をします

The waves of steel on this plow

相当な重機です

jet out the runway snow

融雪剤散布車が連隊の中で一番幅があります

Each plow has a position in the formation and purpose

こちらの重機を見る機会がありました

Real heavy machinery

中をみてみましょう

The Antifreeze Sprayer is the longest in the fleet

中の機械を触る許可は得ていませんが

I have a chance to check out this plow and sweeper

この高い位置がとても良いですね

Let's have a look inside

見渡せる高さです

そしてこの席のスプリングが良いですね

I'm not allowed to touch anything in here

凸凹道を走るときには

I love the positioning high off the ground

除雪作業をするときには

You can just see about everything

カッコよく作業ができますね

and these seats bounce

沢山のボタンや制御装置があります

so if you're going over some rough terrain,

レバー、そしてコンピューターパネルもあり

which you will do with this sweeper and plow,

スクリーン、液晶スクリーンもあります

you're going to be doing it in style

とても複雑な構造です

Right -- there is a CB, lots of controls and buttons

各重機は運転するのが複雑そうです

joystick, there is even a computer panel,

そして各々には別のスキルが必要ですね

a screen, LCD screen

２ｍからの眺めはなかなか素晴らしい

Look really complicated

運転することはできませんでしたが

There's a lot to drive in each truck,

除雪する高揚感は感じられました

and each one requires a new skill to learn

ホワイトインパルスの本部に立ち寄って

Quite a view from 2 meters up

どのように完璧な記録を築き上げてきたのか

Although I couldn't drive one,

聞いてみることにしました

I left with that same snow plow high

チームは常に戦略をたてており

I stopped by the White Impulse headquarters

この仕事についてメンバー達に聞いてみました

This group of younger members are now veterans

すべての重機を使いこなせるということは

Some are second generation White Impulse members

すべてのメンバーの尊敬を受けるということです

When your father was a member, expectations are very high

総括班長にこの隊の経験についてきいてみました

I asked about the job and what it means to be a member

そして彼が雪の無い季節にはなにをしているか。

A feeling of accomplishment

ホワイトインパルスが立ち向かえない雪の状況はあまり無いようです

Learning to operate every machine

私はメンバーではありませんが

is an accomplishment every member respects

滑走路をキレイにできない訳ではありません

I sat down with the divisional leader

青森空港にはカレーライスチャレンジがあります

to talked to him about his experience

ホワイトカレー

and what he does when it's not snowing

シーフード入りの雪色のシチューですが

There doesn't seem to be a challenge White Impulse can't handle

スプーンも通常のスプーンではありません

I may not be a member,

そうなんです。シャベルを使うのです

but that doesn't mean I can't clear the runway

ミッションは明白です

This isn't your ordinary spoon either

and that's exactly what Aomori is during the winter

Aomori prefecture is in the very north end of Honshu Island

温泉。青森中にあります

in the Tohoku region

温泉で究極のリラックスを味わいましょう

Here's the airport and city

身体が熱くなりすぎたなら

but the prefecture straddles the Pacific ocean and Sea of Japan

そこには雪があります

loaded with mountains and nature in the middle

やはり浴槽に戻りましょう

青森には特別な雪のシーズン用汽車があります

Let's look at some of the attractions

遥か昔の経験を今ここで出来る列車です

Onsen. Natural hot springs are everywhere in Aomori

The five stage of hot spring relaxation.

And when the body gets too warm,

煙は煙突から吐き出されます

there is always the snow

かなり特殊な電車です

better stick to the bath

時間を過ごすのには炙ったスルメはいかがでしょうか

Aomori has a special winter time train

見逃せない冬の乗り物です

It's an old style train with an experience going back in time

山での重機はかなり厚い雪の壁を作ります

to stay warm

こちらは酸ヶ湯温泉

The train has stoves installed

地熱がこちらの沼をかなり熱い状態に保ちます

inside the passenger compartment

青森ではスキーも有名です

The smoke goes out the chimney

八甲田山ロープウェイで頂上まで行くことができます

As you can see, there is nothing ordinary about it

スノーモンスターの周りのハイキングも可能でう

Try some hot grilled squid to pass the time

頂上にある氷で覆われた木々です

A winter ride that shouldn't be missed

Snow Blowers in the mountains create high walls

Volcanic heat keeps this swamp thawed

and the Hakkoda Ropeway will take you to the top

You can also hike around the snow monsters

Mt. Iwaki is a stratovolcano that last erupted in 1863

and nearby is an area dedicated to art

In the summer it's a rice field,

but during the winter months

そして乗客に礼を持って見送ります

He's been teaching locals to make their own snow art

Departing Aomori Airport is also as important

青森空港に着陸するのは大きな体験です

to local staff as arriving

日本に冬に来ることがあって、

Here airline workers show their appreciation

青森に飛ぶことがあっても心配なく

and give their respect to the passengers with a bow

They see the plane off until it's out of sight

Winter adventures in Aomori are something to remember

大阪にいき、ビルの中を抜ける高速道路を見に行きます
