At the recent opening of Costco's first mainland China outlet

We just had to see for ourselves.

So we flew to the Shanghai store to check it out on day three.

Things were quite different.

Eventually, we got in after a two-hour wait.

Being inside a massive Costco

巨大なコストコの中にいること

without much of a crowd feels surreal.

Most of the items here are supersized

ここのアイテムはほとんどが超サイズ

and in bulk,

pretty much what you'd get in most Costco outlets in the States.

アメリカではコストコのアウトレットで買えるものがほとんどです。

But the luxury bags and expensive Moutai liquor

しかし、豪華なバッグと高価なモウタイリカー

that appeared on social media accounts

ソーシャルメディアのアカウントに登場した

are conspicuously missing.

The membership in China is 299 yuan a year,

which is $42, cheaper than it is in the States.

It also comes with a pretty lenient return policy.

また、かなり甘めの返品規定が付いています。

And if you are up for a $1 hot dog,

they sell it here, too.

Costco itself isn't entirely new to China in the first place.

It's been available to Chinese buyers since 2014,

But it seems although you could get to Costco's goods online,

Our Costco visit...

Our Costco visit was absolutely hectic.

It took an hour and a half to get there,

1時間半ほどで到着しました。

and we waited in line for two hours to get in.

と、2時間ほど並んで待っていました。

It was crazy.

狂気の沙汰でした。

And then when we got in, we're stopped by security

中に入ったら、警備員に止められた。

because we're not allowed to film in there.

撮影禁止だからな

So we got like two minutes of footage on the camera.

カメラには2分間の映像が映っていた

So we just took out our phones

and then just went all over the place with it.

とか言って、それで一通りのことをやった。
