a school of particularly big and tasty fish.

特に大きくて美味しい魚の群れ。

When the rains came and the water rose, the fish appeared,

雨が降って水が上がると、魚が現れました。

swimming away as the waters fell again.

再び水が落ちてくると泳ぎ去っていきました。

The villagers along the river reveled in this occasional bounty—

川沿いの村人たちは、この時折の恵みを楽しんでいた。

and wanted more.

ともっと欲しがっていました。

They followed them upriver deep into the jungle

彼らはジャングルの奥深くまで彼らを追いかけた

to a lagoon that thundered with the sound of flapping fish.

バタバタと音を立てて鳴くラグーンへ。

The whole village set up camp by the lagoon,

村中がラグーンのそばにキャンプを張った。

bringing barbasco, a poison they would put in the water to stun the fish.

魚を気絶させるために水に毒を入れるバルバスコを持ってきていた。

Meanwhile, their young shaman took a walk.

その間、彼らの若いシャーマンは散歩をしていた。

He sensed he might not be completely alone.

彼は完全に一人ではないかもしれないと感じていた。

Then, he came to a monse tree humming so loudly

そして、彼は大声で鼻歌を歌うモンスの木に来ました。

he could hear it even above the thunder of the fish.

魚の雷の上にも聞こえたそうです。

With that, he was sure: spirits lived here.

霊はここに住んでいた。

Back at camp, he warned his people these fish had an owner.

キャンプに戻って、彼は仲間に警告した。この魚には飼い主がいると。

He would find the owner.

彼は所有者を見つけるだろう

Until he returned, no one should fish.

彼が帰ってくるまで、誰も釣りをしてはいけない。

He went to the humming tree.

彼は鼻歌の木に行った。

Inside was a hollow as big as a house, full of busy weavers.

中には家ほどの大きさの空洞があり、忙しそうに織る人たちでいっぱいでした。

Their chief invited him in,

署長が彼を中に招き入れた。

explaining that the juicy little siripia fruits were ripening,

ジューシーで小さなシリピアの実が熟していたことを説明してくれました。

and they were weaving baskets to collect them.

と言って籠を編んで回収していました。

Though they looked and acted like people,

見た目も行動も人並みだったけど。

the shaman knew they were juri, or air goblins,

シャーマンは彼らがジュリかエアゴブリンだと知っていた

who could fly and control the winds.

飛ぶことができ、風を操ることができる人。

They taught him how to weave.

織り方を教えてくれました。

Before the shaman left,

シャーマンが出て行く前に

the goblin chief whispered some cryptic instructions in his ear.

ゴブリンの長は、耳元で何か隠語のような指示を囁いた。

Finally, he told him to tie a pineapple shoot outside a hollow log

最後に、彼は中空の丸太の外で松ぼっくりのシュートを結ぶように言った

and sleep inside that night.

と言って、その夜は中で寝る。

Back at camp, the villagers were fishing with barbasco poison, cooking, and eating.

キャンプに戻ると、村人たちはバルバスコの毒で釣りをしたり、料理をしたり、食べたりしていました。

Only the shaman's little sister refrained.

巫女の妹だけが自粛した。

Then, everyone else fell into a deep sleep.

すると、みんな深い眠りに落ちた。

The shaman and his sister yelled and shook them,

シャーマンと妹が怒鳴って揺さぶりをかけた。

but they wouldn't wake.

でも目を覚まさなかった

It was getting dark, so the shaman and his sister

暗くなってきたので、シャーマンとお姉さんが

tied the pineapple sprout outside the hollow log and crawled inside.

パイナップルの新芽を中空丸太の外側に縛り付け、中に這わせた。

A strong wind rose— the mark of the air goblins.

強風が吹き荒れた......空気のゴブリンの印。

It broke branches and brought down trees.

枝を折ったり、木を倒したりしていました。

Caymans, boas and jaguars roared.

ケイマン、ボア、ジャガーが唸った。

The water began to rise.

水が上がり始めた。

The fish flopped off the drying racks and swam away.

魚は物干し棚からペタペタと泳ぎ去っていきました。

The pineapple sprout turned into a dog.

パイナップルの新芽が犬になった。

All night it barked, keeping the jungle creatures away from the fallen tree.

一晩中吠えて、倒れた木からジャングルの生き物を遠ざけた。

When dawn broke, the flood receded.

夜が明けると、洪水が引いた。

The fish were gone, and most of the people were, too:

魚はいなくなり、ほとんどの人もいなくなっていました。

the jungle animals had devoured them.

ジャングルの動物に食べられてしまった。

Only the shaman's relatives survived.

生き残ったのはシャーマンの親戚だけ。

When his family turned toward him,

家族が彼の方を向いた時

the shaman realized what the goblins meant when they said the fruits were ripening:

シャーマンはゴブリンが果物が熟していると言った時の意味を理解した。

they weren't really collecting siripia fruits at all,

シリピアの実を集めていたわけではありませんでした。

but human eyes.

しかし、人間の目は

The shaman's older sister called him over,

シャーマンのお姉さんに呼ばれた。

trying to touch his face with her long, sharp nails.

長い鋭い爪で彼の顔に触れようとしていた

He backed away and, remembering the goblin chief's instructions,

彼は身を引いて、ゴブリンの酋長の指示を思い出した。

threw palm seeds at her face.

彼女の顔に手のひらの種を投げつけた。

The seeds became eyes.

種が目になった。

But then she transformed into a white-lipped peccary and ran away—

しかし、彼女は白リップのペッカリーに変身して逃げ出してしまった......。

still alive, but no longer human.

まだ生きているが、もはや人間ではない

The shaman and his little sister's whole community was gone.

シャーマンと妹の共同体が全部なくなってしまった。

They went to live with another village,

彼らは別の村に住みに行った。

where he taught everyone to weave baskets, as the air goblins had taught him.

そこで彼は、空気のゴブリンが教えてくれたように、皆に籠を編むことを教えた。

But he couldn't forget the last of the goblin chief's words,

しかし、彼はゴブリンの長の最後の言葉を忘れることができなかった。

which told him how to get revenge.

復讐の方法を教えてくれた

He returned to the air goblins' home carrying chili peppers wrapped in leaves.

葉っぱに包まれた唐辛子を持ってエアゴブリンの家に戻ってきた。

As the goblins watched through their peepholes,

ゴブリンが覗き穴から見ていたように

the shaman made a fire and put the chili peppers on it.

シャーマンが火を起こして唐辛子をかけた。

The fire began to smoke the tree out.

火は木を燻し始めた。

The goblins who had eaten people's eyes died.

人の目を食べたゴブリンは死んだ。

Those who hadn't were light enough to fly away.

持っていなかった人たちは、飛び立つほどに軽かった。

So the goblins, like the humans, paid a steep price.

だからゴブリンは、人間と同じように、急な代償を払った。

But they also lived to tell the tale, like the shaman.

しかし、彼らはまた、シャーマンのように、物語を語るために生きていた。

In Siekopai legend, where the spirit and human worlds meet,

シエコパイ伝説では、霊界と人間界が出会う場所。

there are no clear victors,

明確な勝利者はいない。

and even death is an opportunity for renewal.

そして、死さえも再生の機会である。
