One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small village, himself and two other young boys to compete.

ある日この男の子は、自身と他の男の子 2 人が参加する小さな村の徒競走大会に向けて準備をしていました。

A large crowd had gathered to witness the sporting spectacle and a wise old man, upon hearing of the little boy had traveled far to bear witness also.

当日はたくさんの観衆がこの一大イベントを見るべく集まってきましたが、この男の子のウワサを聞きつけた1人の賢い老人もはるか遠くから足を運んできました。

The race commenced, looking like a level heat at the finishing line, but sure enough the boy dug deep and called on his determination, strength and power.

レースが始まり、ゴール手前まで激しいデッドヒートを繰り返していましたが、予想通りこの男の子が最後の力・強力な意志を振り絞り、

He took the winning line and was first.

1 位でゴールテープを切りました。

The crowd was ecstatic and cheered and waved at the boy.

観衆は熱狂して、この男の子に向けて称賛の声を上げながら手を振りました。

The wise man remained still and calm, expressing no sentiment.

賢い老人はじっと落ち着いたまま、何も感情を表には出しませんでした。

The little boy, however, felt proud and important.

しかし、男の子は達成感に満ちて誇らしい気持ちで一杯でした。

A second race was called, and two new young, fit, challengers came forward, to run with a little boy.

さて、第2レースが近づいてきましたが、今度は新しく 2 人の若くて健康な選手が参加することになりました。

The race was started and sure enough the little boy came through and finished first once again.

レースが始まり、今回もやはりこの男の子が 1 着になりました。

The crowd was ecstatic again and cheered and waved at the boy.

またまた観衆は熱狂して、この男の子に向けて称賛の声を上げながら手を振りました。

The wise man remained still and calm, again expressing no sentiment.

賢い老人はじっと落ち着いたまま、今回も何も感情を表には出しませんでした。

The little boy, however, felt proud and important.

しかし、男の子は達成感に満ちて誇らしい気持ちで一杯でした。

"Another race, another race!" pleaded the little boy.

「もう一回、別のレースをしよう！」、その男の子は頼みました。

The wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers, an elderly frail lady and a blind man.

賢い老人はここで前に歩み出て、2 人の挑戦者を紹介しましたが、1 人は歳を取った体の弱いおばあさんで、もう 1 人は盲目の男性でした。

"What is this?", quizzed the little boy.

「何なのこれ？」と男の子は訊きました。

"This is no race" he exclaimed.

「こんなのレースにならないじゃないか！」と叫び散らしたのです。

"Race!", said the wise man.

「いいから走りなさい！」と賢い老人は言いました。

The race was started and the boy was the only finisher, the other two challengers left standing at the starting line.

レースが始まりましたが、ゴールに到達したのはその男の子だけで、他の 2 人はスタートラインに立ったままでした。

The little boy was ecstatic, he raised his arms in delight.

男の子は大喜びで、歓喜の中腕を振り上げました。

The crowd, however, were silent, showing no sentiment toward the little boy.

ところが、観衆は静まり返ったまま、この男の子に対して何も感情を表しませんでした。

"What has happened? Why not do the people join in my success?" he asked the wise old man.

「どうしたのコレ？何でみんなボクの勝利を喜んでくれないんだ？」と男の子は賢い老人に尋ねました。

"Race again," replied the wise man, "…this time finished together, all three of you, finished together" continued the wise man.

「もう 1 回走りなさい」と賢い老人は言い、さらに「…今回は 3 人一緒にゴールに入るんだ」と続けました。

The little boy thought a little, stood in the middle of the blind man and the frail old lady, and then took the two challengers by the hand.

男の子は少しの間考えて、盲目の男性と弱ったおばあさんの間に立ち、2 人の手を取りました。

The race began and the little boy walked slowly, ever so slowly, to the finishing line and crossed it.

レースが始まり、男の子は今までに無い程ゆっくりと歩き、ゴールラインを超えました。

The crowd were ecstatic and cheered and waved at the boy.

観衆は熱狂して、この男の子に向けて称賛の声を上げながら手を振りました。

The wise man smiled, gently nodding his head.

賢い老人は笑顔を浮かべ、ゆっくりとうなずきました。

The little boy felt proud and important.

男の子は達成感に満ちて誇らしい気持ちで一杯でした。

"Old man, I understand not! Who are the crowd cheering for? Which one of us three?", asked the little boy.

「おしいさん、どうなってんの?　みんな誰に歓声を送ってるの？3 人のうち誰に？」と男の子は尋ねました。

The wise old man looked into the little boy's eyes, placing his hands on the boy's shoulders, and replied softly…

賢い老人は男の子目をじっと見て、肩に手を置いて優しい声で答えました。

"Little boy, for this race you have won much more than in any race you have ever ran before, and for this race the crowd cheer not for any winner!"

「いいかい坊や、このレースではキミがこれまで勝ってきたどのレースよりも多くのものを勝ち取ったんだよ。そして、観衆は勝者に対して歓声を送っているのではないんだ！」

You see in life… in your life, what are you running for?

皆さんは、人生で何に向かって走り続けていますか？

Are you hungry for success?

成功したいという思いに駆られて？

Is winning the only measurement for you in your life?

自分が勝つかどうかが、人生で唯一の判断基準になっていませんか？

Who are you running against?

誰に対して競争を仕掛けているんですか？

And if you always win against everybody, and soon the people will stop cheering for you.

もし、いつも周りの人全員に勝つような人生を送っていると、そのうち誰からも称賛の声が送られなくなってしまいます。

At the end of your life if you look back…

人生の終わりに差し掛かる時、これまでを振り返りながら…

The question is: "Who was running next to you, in this race?"

「このレースを誰に対抗して走り続けてきたんだ？」と自問することになるのです。

"If they were weaker and old, did you help them to get across the line?"

「自分よりも弱くて歳のいった人だったら、その人がゴールに入れるよう手を差し伸べただろうか？」

"Did you all finish together?"

「一緒にゴールテープを切っただろうか？」といった具合に。

Because that is the best race you can ever run…

これが人生で一番のレースです。

So run!

さあ、走りましょう！

Run this race called "life"!

「人生」という名のレースを！

But don't forget, it is not important if you win.

でも、勝つことが大事なのではありません。

It is important how you run this race.

どのようにレースをするかが重要なのです。
