I am Canadian.

ブリティッシュコランビア州の バンクーバーで生まれて

I was born in Vancouver, B.C.

リッチモンド市に住んでいて

I lived in Richmond, B.C.

親がカムループス市に引っ越して

My family moved to Kamloops, B.C.

今はカナダのどこかの森の中に住んでいます。

And now they live in the middle of the woods somewhere.

それが、親の夢でした。

Living their dream, on their own.

And I'm here in Japan.

But, every once in a while

カナダの話もしたいんですね。

I really want to talk about Canada.

カナダもとても素敵な国ですからね。

Because Canada is beautiful too.

私はカナダから世界に出た時まで 気付かなかったことがあります。

You know, it wasn't until I started traveling abroad

隣の国であるのに、世界の人たちにとって、カナダって

that I realized just how often Canada gets overshadowed

アメリカに比べると知名度があんまりないことに気付きました。

by its big American neighbor, the United States.

初対面で日本の方と会話していると

When I'm meeting a Japanese person for the first time,

９９％の確率で、出身について聞かれます。

I would say 99% of the time they are going to ask me

そして

where I'm from.

「カナダから来ました」と答えると

When I tell them I'm from Canada I often hear some

そこからの会話によって

pretty interesting responses that kind of indicate

日本の方がカナダについてどう思っているのかが

to me that a lot of people don't really have a

結構しっかりわかってきますね。

very solid image of what Canada is like.

Sometimes I will talk to people who don't even know

簡単に説明すれば、カナダの人は 英語とフランス語を話しています

what language we speak in Canada,

そしてカナダがかなり広い国なので

or they will think that Canadian is a language of its own.

場所によってフランス語の方がペラペラ喋れる人がいたり

So to clarify, in Canada we speak English and French,

またはフランス語を少ししか話せない人もいます。

and depending on where you go in the country of Canada,

カナダの高校では、必ず英語とフランス語をの授業を 受けないといけないです。

it's a big country, I would say that French is

つまり、私もフランス語を少しわかりますよ。

much more prevalent in certain parts of Canada

しかし日本にきてから全く使ってないです。

than in others.

もう一つの、よく会話にでる話は

However, it is mandatory that we all learn French

So, I can understand a little bit of French,

although I never use it anymore.

これもまた、行く場所によって天候が違いますし

Another thing I often hear in conversations with people,

そしてぶっちゃけいうと、 ずっと外に立っていなければ

when I'm talking about Canada is:

家の中、お店の中、レストランの中などが、すごく暖かいので、そう辛くないです。

It's true that Canadian winters can be very cold

日本に比べると、実は、日本の冬の方が寒く感じます

and unpredictable and unforgiving.

これは、湿気もあるので、外にいる時は寒いけど、家の中でも寒く感じます。

But, it really depends on where you go,

その理由で、カナダの冬のほうがむしろ過ごしやすいとは、私は思いますよ。

and as long as you're not outside,

とにかく、カナダは広い国で

you're going to be toasty warm and having a good time.

たくさんの国の文化が入っています。

Japan, on the other hand, feels cold all winter no matter what you do.

しかし、例えばずっとカナダに住んでいても、

When you're inside your house, it's cold. When you're outside your house, it's cold.

ずっと旅行せずに、同じ場所に住み続けたら

That is why I actually prefer Canadian winters over Japanese ones.

カナダで生まれ育った人でも、カナダの多様的な文化に触れることができないでしょう。

Anyway, Canada is a huge country.

もしカナダを旅する機会があったら

And it's very diverse and very multicultural.

それがすごくラッキーなことだと思います。

But it's so big, that if you are living in one place

カナダで生まれ育った人たちの中でも 自分の国を旅したことがない人がいるので

your whole life, you might never actually get to experience

すこし残念だと思いますね。

just how multicultural and diverse it really is.

カナダって本当に面白いので色々体験してほしいです。

So, if you ever have the chance to travel Canada,

オススメの場所の一つは

consider yourself so lucky because many Canadians

カナダの北のほうにある ホワイトホースという町です。

don't take the opportunity to travel it themselves.

ホワイトホース（白馬）は人口が少ないし

Which is such a shame.

冬がすごく寒いんだけど

It's a really, really interesting and beautiful country.

オーロラを見に行きたければ、ここが良いです。

One of my ultimate favorite places that I've been to

犬ぞりの体験もできますよ！

in Canada is White Horse in the Yukon territory.

雪がブランケットのように土をカバーしているし

White Horse, it's this tiny little town,

野生の動物がたくさんいるし

and in the winter it is very cold.

だけど私にとって、 ホワイトホースの一番素敵なところは

It's up north.

世界の人たちがそこを 選んで住んでいるってことです。

It's a great place to see the Northern Lights.

つまり、犬ぞりが大好きなフランス人がいたけど

There's dog sledding.

犬ぞりのためにホワイトホースに移住したって。

There's blankets of snow.

それからオーロラのツアーガイドをやりたくて

There's wildlife reserves.

ホワイトホースに移住した日本人の夫婦も居ました！

But the thing that I really liked about White Horse,

ホワイトホースを選んで移住してきたって。

was how many people lived there that were not Canadian.

そして、または

I met someone who was French, and loved dog sledding,

ホワイトホース町の野生生物保護区で働くために来た女性もいました。

and moved to White Horse.

つまり、外国の方がホワイトホースにわざわざ引っ越してくるほど

I met a Japanese couple who moved to White Horse

素敵な町ですよ。

so they could do tours, and they liked it up there,

もう一つのオススメできる場所があります。

and that's why they chose to live there.

東海岸にあるプリンス・エドワード島です。

And I met someone who came to work on an animal reserve,

たしかに日本からすこし遠い旅になりますけどね。

because they loved animals.

トロントまで飛んで乗り使えしなきゃいけないからですね。

It's just, it's so interesting to meet people who are

だけどプリンス・エドワード島も素敵です。

in love with the place that they chose to live.

カナダの東海岸が本当に雰囲気が全然違います。

Another place that I've been to that I can totally recommend

ビーチの砂が鉄が入っているので、

is Prince Edward Island.

真っ赤ですよ。

It is kind of a long flight from Japan.

新鮮なロブスターもいっぱい食べれます。

You have to transfer in Toronto and then fly to PEI.

私はある食べ物の祭りのために プリンス・エドワード島に行きましたが、

But, PEI, oh my God.

釣りたてのロブスターをたくさん食べました。

The east coast of Canada is just beautiful.

焼き方としては、炭と一緒に砂浜にいれて

The beaches are bright red because of all of the iron

スモーク？で焼いた感じでした。

in the sand.

もっと詳しく聞けばよかったなあ。 うまく説明できませんが

They eat lots of lobster.

めっちゃくちゃおいしかったです。

When I went to PEI it was for a food festival,

and we were eating fresh lobster.

可愛らしい島でした。
