You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.

But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin.

しかし、私が本当に伝えたい相手は、トレイヴォン・マーティン君のご両親です。

If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon.

もし私に息子がいたら、トレイヴォンくんのようだったでしょう。

They had their entire lives ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.

彼らには未来がありました。誕生日、卒業、結婚、彼らの子どもたち。

Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

凶弾に倒れた被害者の中には教員もいました。我が国の子どもたちが夢を叶えられるよう助け、支えることに心血を注いでくれていた方々です。

So our hearts are broken today.

今、私たちは胸が張り裂ける思いです。

It's the idea held by generations of citizens, who believe that America is a constant work in progress, who believe that loving this country requires... requires more than singing its praises or avoiding uncomfortable truths.

それは、わが国民が何世代にもわたって抱いてきた理念です。アメリカが常に進化の過程にあると信じている人々、この愛すべき国に必要なのは、自画自賛や不都合な真実からの逃避などではないと信じている人々が抱く理念です。

It requires the occasional disruption, the willingness to speak out for what is right, to shake up the status quo.

時には混乱も、正しいことのために声を上げ、現状を揺るがす強い気持ちも求められるでしょう。

That's America.

それがアメリカなのです。

Black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, young, old, gay, straight, men, women, folks with disabilities all pledging allegiance under the same proud flag to this big, bold country that we love.

黒人、白人、ラテン系、アジア系、ネイティブアメリカン、老いも若きも、ゲイも、ゲイではない人も、男性、女性、障害のある人々もみんな、誇り高きこの旗のもと、我らが愛するこの大きな、勇敢な国に忠誠を誓っている。

That's what I see.

That's the America I know.

I do have one final ask of you as your president.

The same thing I asked when you took a chance on me eight years ago.
