Japan was one of the first countries to cancel public schools nationwide back in late February of this year.

Now, after 3 months off, Japan is one of the first countries to be sending kids back to school.

This is our last weekend before school starts again, and we're going to make the most of it

3か月が経ち 日本は早期の学校再開を実現しました

 at least as much as we can with restrictions still in place.

With the number of virus infections remaining low, society is opening up step by step.

Living in the greater Tokyo area offers a number of excellent choices,

depending on how far you want your kids to travel via public transportation and how much you can afford.

For us the decision of where we wanted our kids to go to school was fairly straight forward,

学校再開に備えて 鞄の準備よ

School starts tomorrow so it's crunch time to get all their bags.

古い鞄は使いたくないって

Because all of a sudden they don't want to use any of their old bags.

May is a beautiful month then you get to June and it is rainy season. And here on June 1, it is appropriately raining.

So, we are headed to school.

4人の子供を 2つの場所に 3回に分けて送ります

The girls have 40 minutes today.

忙しい朝です

We have 4 kids going 2 different directions at 3 different times.

今日は雨だね

We are going to be busy this morning.

ママの自転車で行くの？

It is rainy out today huh dude.

幼稚園まで自転車だね

Are you going on the bike with mommy?

マリオが家で待ってるわよ

She's going to drop you off at kindergarten, at your preschool.

マリオはどこ？

Mario's going to wait for him at home.

"帰ったら遊ぼうね！" って言ってるみたいだね

He is right there. There he is!

私達の子供は日本の学校で 日本語で勉強しています

He is like "Joshua, I'm going to be ready when you come home, we are going to play!"

小学校に進級する頃には 日本語の基礎が身に着いています

All of our kids now first entered school at kindergarten and learned Japanese there.

片仮名と平仮名を勉強します

So as they get to elementary school, like Sarah is now, they already have a basic understanding of Japanese

宿題のレベルが上がると 僕らでは分からない位です

And they start learning Katakana and they start learning Hiragana

サラは宿題の仕上げかな？

And as they bring back homework, the further along they get the harder and harder it gets for us to help them in that homework.

- ジョシュアは？ - 離れる時泣いちゃったわ

Sarah are you getting the final touches on your homework done

- 大変だった？ - ちゃんと行かせたわよ

Joshua, dropping him off. He cried and cried.

サラも幼稚園の最初の頃は 別れ際に泣いてました

Not easy is it? No! I'm about to go pull him out.

1年経つと 楽しそうになりました

Sarah also for many months she would cry - for a year she cried when we went to kindergarten.

これからサラの登校だね

But then after that first year, then she was fine.

さっきよりマシだわ

It's Sarah's turn now to go to school. At least you have had some practice at this, huh?

車で向かうよ

Not as nightmarey as before.

もう濡れるのは大変だからね

Sarah we get to drive you. Oh my goodness.

サラはすごく楽しそうだったわ

It's cause we don't want to walk in the rain anymore. We've had enough.

Sarah was super excited to go to school.

Went jumping and bouncing up to class.

And I found out, Uncle Ben checked on Joshua for me, he is not crying anymore. So praise the Lord. Thank you Jesus!

「何で日本の公立校に通わせるの？」と よく聞かれます

Oh cool.

理由の一つは 日本語をネイティブレベルに学べる事

One question that we get asked quite a bit is why we send our kids to Japanese school.

娘達の日本語は 私の何倍も上手です

And there are several reasons, but one — it really helps them learn Japanese like a native speaker.

毎日日本語で 勉強しているからです

And, so the girls are way better in Japanese than me.

地元と繋がる良い機会でもあります 学校で近所の友達が出来ます

Because they are surrounded by it every day.

近所の公園で遊んだり 週末を一緒に過ごせる友達が沢山出来ます

And also it helps us support our community,

お帰りサラ！ 学校はどうだった？

Helps the kids make friends in our neighborhoods

楽しかった！

So when they go to the park or on weekends they'll play with their friends that they made at school.
