It's woken a lot of young people up to the fact that the old ways of doing things just don't work.

多くの若者が、昔ながらのやり方が必ずしも正しく導いてくれるとは限らない、という所に気付いたのです。

That it doesn't matter how much money you make if everyone around you is hungry and sick.

自分がどれだけお金を持っていても、周りの人たちが食べるものに困っていて病気を患っているなら何の意味も無いんです。

And that our society and our democracy only work when we think not just about ourselves but about each other.

そして、この社会や民主主義といったものは、自分の事だけではなくお互いを思いやるからこそ成り立つものなのです。

You know all those adults that you used to think were in charge and knew what they were doing?

昔は大人の言うことを聞いていればまず大丈夫だと思っていたじゃないですか？

Turns out they don't have all the answers.

でも、全ての事に対する答えを知っているわけではないみたいですよね。

A lot of them aren't even asking the right questions.

問題解決に対して、正しいアプローチを取っている人自体それほど多くはなかったりしますから。

So if the world's gonna get better, it's gonna be up to you.

というわけで、世界がより良くなるかどうかは、皆さん次第になってくるのです。

Because with so much uncertainty, with everything suddenly up for grabs, this is your generation's world to shape.

分からないことだらけで、突如何でも起こり得る世界になってしまった今、皆さんの世代がこの世界を形作っていくことになるんです。

America's gone through tough times before—slavery, Civil War, famine, disease, the Great Depression, and 911.

アメリカはこれまでにも苦しい時代を経験してきました。奴隷制度、南北戦争、疫病、大恐慌、そして 9 / 11。

And each time we came out stronger, usually because a new generation, young people like you, learned from past mistakes and figured out how to make things better.

その都度、たくましさを増して立て直してきましたが、それは皆さんのような新しい世代が過去の間違いから学び、どのようにしたら物事をより良くすることができるかを考え出してきたからです。

Doing what feels good, what's convenient, what's easy, that's how little kids think.

やっていて楽しい事、都合のイイ事、簡単な事というのは小さな子どもが考えることです。

Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grown-ups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still think that way, which is why things are so screwed up.

残念ながら、俗に言う「オトナたち」の中には、カッコいい役職名や職種の人もいますけど、その考え方を捨てられない人もたくさんいるんです。うまく物事が機能していない原因はそこにあります。

But if we're gonna get through these difficult times, if we're gonna create a world where everybody has an opportunity to find a job and afford college, if we're gonna save the environment and defeat future pandemics, then we're gonna have to do it together.

でも、今の厳しい時代を生き抜いて、誰もが仕事を得られて大学教育を受けられて、環境を保護して将来的なパンデミック発生を撲滅させるには、皆が協力をして進んでいかなくてはいけないんです。

So be alive to one another's struggles.

ですから、お互いが苦しんでいる点について目を背けないでください。

Stand up for one another's rights.

他人の権利のために立ち上がって下さい。

Leave behind all the old ways of thinking that divide us—sexism, racial prejudice, status, greed—and set the world on a different path.

亀裂を生むだけの古い考えは全て捨てましょう。性差別や人種偏見、ステータスや欲といったものにとらわれずに、新しい未来へ世界を導いていくのです。

The truth is you don't need us to tell you what to do because in so many ways, you've already started to lead.

実際のところ、皆さんは私たちからあれしろこれしろと言われる必要はないんです。皆さんはすでに本当に様々なカタチで世界を引っ張り始めていますから。
