What's the difference here?

違いは何でしょうか？

You see the simplest answer is this: that understanding is a passive skill.

単純な答えは、これです―理解するのは、受動的なスキルだからです。

Speaking English is an active skill.

英語を話すのは、能動的なスキルです。

You see, understanding English, understanding a language only requires passive, or what I call uncontrolled memory.

英語、言語を理解するには、受動的な記憶しか使いません。私はこれを、非制御記憶と呼んでいます。

Speaking requires controlled memory.

話すには、制御記憶が必要です。

Have you ever been in a situation that you remember you want to go some place, and you kind of vaguely remember what it looks like, but you just can not recall the street name, just can not remember.

どこかに行きたくて、何となく、そこがどんな場所か覚えているけれど、通りの名前が出てこない、どうしても思い出せない、という経験をしたことはありますか？

But until you see something, or see a sign, suddenly you remember, "oh yup that's what it is."

何かを見た途端、例えばサインを見ると、突然思い出すんです。「ああ、それだ」って。

Now, I remember that.

思い出した。

You see, that's uncontrolled memory.

これが、非制御記憶です。

It's passive memory.

受動的な記憶ですね。

But when you are speaking, you do not have that luxury.

でも話している時は、こんな贅沢はできませんね。

Another reason is, when you first learn a language, especially when English may not be your first language, right, there are a lot of fears.

それから、言語を初めて学ぶ時、特に英語が母語ではない場合、恐れというものがあります。

You don't want to look bad, you don't want to look stupid.

悪く見られたくない、バカだと思われたくない。

So even though you are listening, (and) you understand some of it, you're afraid to practice.

聞いていて、いくらか理解はできているけれど、実践するのが怖いんです。

And if you don't practice speaking, you're not going to get good simply because speaking as I said, is an active skill.

スピーキングは練習しないと、上達しません。それは単純に、先ほども言ったように、スピーキングが能動的なスキルだからです。

Now one of the things that you could do is to get a boyfriend, or a girlfriend who speaks English.

英語を話す彼氏や彼女をゲットすることも、できるかもしれませんね。

That is their native (language), English.

母語が英語の人です。

That is probably the fastest way to learn because you have no choice, but to speak the language every single day on the phone, through text with them, or face-to-face.

これが、最も速く学習できる方法でしょう。だって、電話やメールを通して、そして面と向かって、毎日、英語を話す他ありませんからね。

That's probably the quickest way to learn.

これが、一番速い学習方法だと思います。

But another way that you could learn it, if you don't want to do that, is to actually learn public speaking in English.

でも、恋人を作る方法はちょっと…という人は、英語で演説法を学ぶことです。

Here's why.

理由を説明します。

When you have to present, when you have to speak to groups, in English, it forces you, first of all, to develop that active skill.

英語で述べる時や、グループを相手に話す時には、そもそも、この能動的なスキルの向上を余儀なくされます。

You're practicing, you are speaking.

練習し、話す。

And when you are speaking to groups, you're actually over-training.

グループに向けて話すのは、実はオーバートレーニングです。

What I mean by that, because if you could speak to groups, in English fluently, you can definitely do one-on-one.

どういう意味かと言うと、グループ相手に英語を流暢に話せるのなら、必ず、1 対 1 でも話せるからです。

When you're speaking to a group of people, it forces you to think about the structure of what you are going to say.

グループに向けて話している時には、自分が話す内容の構造について、必ず考えなければなりません。

It forces you to articulate.

はっきり話さないといけません。

It forces you to project.

提示しないといけません。

It forces you to use your body language.

ボディーランゲージを使わないといけません。

Some of these things that you probably wouldn't practice if it's one-on-one.

こういったスキルの中には、1 対 1で話している場合だと、実践しないものもありますね。

So by being an effective public speaker in English, naturally it makes you more fluent in the English language.

英語での演説が上手くできるというのは、つまり、英語をより流暢に話せる、ということなのです。

Does that make sense?

お分かりでしょうか。

And this is why most people they struggle with the English language, because they can read, that can write, they can listen but they just can not speak it.

だから、大半の人が英語で苦労するのです。読めるし、書けるし、聞けるのに、話せないからです。

Because they don't practice enough.

それは、練習不足だからです。
