  • All right.

  • So I'm gonna try the rocks daily schedule for All right.

  • So that's not gonna happen anyway.

  • The rock schedule for a week.

  • Let's go four o'clock in the morning.

  • I wake up for 34.

  • 45.

  • I'm doing some sort of cardio open the garage doors still dark outside.

  • I do this and then I'll have breakfast in bed and I will go get my strength training gym about an hour on.

  • Then I'll go to set way.

  • Don't know that the rock is an inspirational person.

  • His work ethic, Miss workouts, is feeding habits.

  • And for me, personally, I'm just really impressed with anyone who's really productive.

  • And the rock definitely comes off very productive.

  • A lot of people associate getting up early with being more productive, because if you get up at 4 a.m. then you should have a head start on everyone else.

  • You should also be able to get more work done because you basically get up three hours before most normal people.

  • D'oh!

  • And also at that time, no one else is around to disturb you, which means that you again should be able to get more work done.

  • This is not what happened for me.

  • Let's take a look at the rocks schedule.

  • He wakes up at 4 a.m. The first thing he will do is go do some cardio for about 30 minutes.

  • After this, he eats his breakfast.

  • Then, around 6 a.m. he will head to the gym for a second workout, which will focus on strength training.

  • After this, he will shower and eat his post workout, his days obviously very a ton, depending on what project he's working on.

  • So I kind of had to deduce what the rest of his day might look like based on the little information that I had, which was how many meals?

  • Seats per day, which is about 6 to 7.

  • And to be honest, there's a lot of eating in this day.

  • But at around 9 a.m. he'd be finished with his 1st 2 workouts and his first meals, and that would be when his work day begins.

  • You'd probably have to a film set to shoot some Hollywood blockbuster movie.

  • I'm not quite there yet, so from now I set up the schedule to be what I would imagine that a day at the office would look like for the road.

  • Nine until 11 a.m. Work 11 till 11:30 a.m. Eat the third meal 11 30 till 1 p.m. Work 1 to 2 p.m. Eat the fourth meal 2 to 5 PM Work 5 to 5:30 p.m. Eat the fifth meal 5 30 until 7:30 p.m. Free time.

  • 7 30 until 8 p.m. Eat the sixth meal and then 8 p.m. So that is the schedule that I followed.

  • And the thing is that I kind of life to get up early, so it didn't seem too crazy to me to get up at 4 a.m. However, when you get up at 4 a.m. that also means they have to go to bed at about 8 p.m. or nine pm if you want to get your 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

  • And that means that even though you get three hours more than most people in the morning, you also get three hours less than most people in the evening.

  • If you want to get your 78 hours of sleep, which you should here we have the classic line from Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  • When he was asked about sleeping only five hours per night and how he could do it, he replied, which is sleep faster, which is a killer line, But it's also really bad advice.

  • Some people don't need as much sleep as others, but the majority of the world needs 7 to 8 hours per night.

  • If you do not want to significantly decrease your life span.

  • Science is very clear on this.

  • All right, so now I'm done with my cardio, and it is right now for 31 A.

  • M.

  • S.

  • You can see.

  • And I'm feeling pretty good, to be honest, a lot better than I thought and a lot better than I look.

  • I promise.

  • And now I'm just gonna go upstairs and have some breakfast.

  • But I'm also kind of wondering what my neighbors think of me.

  • They must think I'm insane because as they come down in the morning to get their bikes to Goto work, they find this crazy guy rowing in a storage unit, as you do for a while now, I've been very bad with eating.

  • As in, I tend not to.

  • So one of the most beneficial parts of following the rocks daily routine was actually the eating.

  • And to be honest, when you get up that early and due to workouts first thing in the morning, you need to feed yourself in order to function.

  • And I noticed overall feeling better because I was more full throughout the day.

  • However, I get super sluggish after eating, so getting myself to the gym straight after breakfast is never easy.

  • I've been working out now for about 10 years, and lately I've been doing it around 8 a.m. So this wasn't too different from that, since I'm not a Hollywood movie star.

  • Yet I decided that when he would be on set filming some movie, I would instead be working on my own projects.

  • And I kind of took this week as an opportunity to try to maximize my output and get as much done as I possibly could, and so essentially made a list of all the things that I wanted to get done this week and that ice loaded that into the available times in my Google calendar.

  • And let's just say it didn't go according to plan.

  • So here's a look at what my planned week looked like.

  • And here's a look at what my actual week ended up looking like I've been a productivity nerd for a while now.

  • And one of the main things that I've learned that really shows in this week is this.

  • If you're tired, sleep and if you're excited, work as you can see the 1st 2 days, I got a bit of stuff done in the morning after all the workouts.

  • But later on during the week, you can see the progressively increased fatigue show its ugly face.

  • Working out in the morning was not super difficult because it's kind of mindless work.

  • But getting to work after having gotten little sleep and also doing to workouts was really hard.

  • With my normal schedule, I tend to wake up in the morning and they work for a couple hours and then go work out.

  • And the reason for this is that I know that once I've gone to the gym, I have to go home.

  • I have to shower and I have to eat, and that usually takes me a while to d'oh!

  • And once I'm done eating, it's very hard to get back the momentum and get back into working.

  • And that is what I struggled with a lot.

  • Towards the end of the week after I'd had my second meal around 9 a.m. I was dead tired, so I would often end up procrastinating until about 10 or 11 a.m. and then I had to eat again.

  • So this really goes to show the importance of my principle when it comes to setting up your own schedule, which is the if you're tired, sleep.

  • And if you're excited work.

  • I have found that the way to increase productivity the most is by listening to your body.

  • Sometimes you need to sleep in, and sometimes you should just work on the thing that excites you and not what you had planned.

  • The main thing for me after following the rock schedule for a week is that I felt like I used up a lot of my energy in the early mornings, and then I was left trying to recover from that major energy expenditure throughout the rest of the day, and I never really did, which meant that I felt a lot less productive overall.

  • And keep in mind that during this week I was eating way more than I would normally eat.

  • And if I hadn't done that, I don't even know if I would have been able to function getting up at four o'clock in the morning every day before anybody else.

  • It's a great feeling to get in the gym in the morning, set a goal and leave the gym knowing you accomplished it.

  • At the end of the day, it's never too early or too late to get after your goals.

  • Once you start that first step, you take that action.

  • That's gonna be what creates the momentum, and once you get some momentum going, then you're off to the races.

  • But I think that the takeaway here is not to get caught up in the trend of waking up super early to be crazy, productive.

  • There are definitely benefits to doing that, but I think that more often than not, we attempt these things and think it will be a magic pill.

  • If you want to be successful, you need to get up at 4 a.m. And due to workouts before anyone else wakes up.

  • And even though that is crazy, motivational and inspirational, that doesn't mean that it's the best way to do things.

  • In order to do your best work, you need to have mental clarity, sleep and food or the biggest determining factors here.

  • If you get up in our later, you may have more mental clarity, which means that you can get the job done in one hour instead of two.

  • But that's just the thought.

  • All right, that's it for this one.

  • I hope you enjoyed it.

  • And I hope you got some tips regarding how to set up your own weak and scheduled to be more productive.

  • And before you go, I just want to mention clean code Friday, which is a short email that I sent out once every week.

  • So every Friday.

  • That contains a few of the most interesting things that are found throughout the week.

  • So this would be things like podcasts of Listen, Thio book, some reading, productivity tips, articles of red coding, tips and tricks and really just anything that I think you might enjoy.

  • So if you want to sign up to that, you can go to caltech dot com slash clean code.

  • There will also be a link in the description.

  • All right, that's it for this one.

All right.
