Peace is not the dove and the rainbow --

as lovely as they are.

平和は愛らしく描かれるハトや

When I see the symbols

虹でもありません

of the rainbow and the dove,

虹やハトを見たときに

I think of personal serenity.

私が連想するのは

I think of meditation.

心の平静であったり

I do not think

瞑想です

about what I consider to be peace,

私が平和だと思うものは

which is sustainable peace

連想しません

with justice and equality.

私にとって平和とは 正義や平等が存在し

It is a sustainable peace

持続可能な平和です

in which the majority of people

世界中で

on this planet

大多数の人が尊厳のある生活を送れるように

have access to enough resources

十分な資源を

to live dignified lives,

手に入れられる

where these people have enough access

持続可能な平和です

to education

教育や医療を

and health care,

十分に得られる場所に

so that they can live in freedom from want

and freedom from fear.

This is called human security.

And I am not a complete pacifist

I was in Hiroshima

a couple of weeks ago,

and His Holiness --

we're sitting there in front of thousands of people in the city,

and there were about eight of us Nobel laureates.

And he's a bad guy. He's like a bad kid in church.

We're staring at everybody, waiting our turn to speak,

We need that in the world.

I spoke with Aung Sun Suu Kyi

a couple of days ago.

As most of you know,

she's a hero for democracy in her country, Burma.

ご存じのように彼女は

You probably also know

ビルマの民主化のヒーローです

that she has spent 15 of the last 20 years

民主化運動が原因で

imprisoned for her efforts

彼女が過去20年間のうち

to bring about democracy.

15年間 軟禁されたことも

She was just released a couple of weeks ago,

ご存じでしょう

and we're very concerned to see how long she will be free,

彼女は数週間前に釈放されたばかりで

because she is already out in the streets in Rangoon,

agitating for change.

She is already out in the streets, working with the party

to try to rebuild it.

But I talked to her for a range of issues.

But one thing that I want to say,

Here's another woman hero of mine.

She's my friend, Dr. Shirin Ebadi,

She has been in exile

for the last year and a half.

is very creative.

It's hard work every day.

When she was planting those trees,

I don't think most people understand

that, at the same time,

she was using the action

of getting people together to plant those trees

to talk about how to overcome

it is other women in the world

who are also struggling together

世界には 世の中を変えるために

to change this world.

The Women's League of Burma,

女性たちがいます

11 individual organizations of Burmese women

ビルマ人女性で構成される

came together because there's strength in numbers.

11の組織が力を強めるために

Working together is what changes our world.

ビルマ女性連盟を結成しました

The Million Signatures Campaign

共に活動することで 世界が変わります

of women inside Burma

百万人署名キャンペーンに参加している

working together to change human rights,

ビルマにいる女性は

to bring democracy to that country.

人権のため 民主化のために

When one is arrested and taken to prison,

活動しています

another one comes out and joins the movement,

ある人が投獄されれば

recognizing that if they work together,

別の人が その運動に加わっていきます

they will ultimately bring change

共に活動すれば いつかその国に

in their own country.

変化をもたらせると

Betty Williams on the right-hand side --

bringing peace to Northern Ireland.

I'll tell you the quick story.

北アイルランドに平和をもたらしています

An IRA driver was shot,

ある話をしましょう

and his car plowed into people

on the side of the street.

There was a mother and three children.

歩行者に突っ込みました

The children were killed on the spot.

母と子ども３人のうち

It was Mairead's sister.

Instead of giving in

to grief, depression, defeat

in the face of that violence,

Mairead hooked up with Betty --

a staunch Protestant and a staunch Catholic --

and they took to the streets

to say, "No more violence."

And they were able to get

tens of thousands of, primarily, women, some men,

in the streets to bring about change.

And they have been

part of what brought peace to Northern Ireland,

and they're still working on it,

because there's still a lot more to do.

but that democracy is not just about voting;

That's what I got stuck doing --

the landmine campaign.

One of the things that made this campaign work

関わり続けた理由です

is because we grew from two NGOs

二つのNGOを世界90ヶ国にわたって

to thousands

何千もの数に増やしたことが

in 90 countries around the world,

このキャンペーンが成功した

working together in common cause to ban landmines.

理由の一つです

Some of the people who worked in our campaign

地雷撲滅という共通の目的をもち 共に活動しました

could only work maybe an hour a month.

キャンペーンの参加者には

They could maybe volunteer that much.

忙しい人もいて

There were others, like myself,

少しだけ参加する人や

who were full-time.

私のように

But it was the actions, together, of all of us

常に活動した人もいましたが

that brought about that change.

皆が活動したことによって

In my view, what we need today

変えることができたのです

is people getting up

今 私たちに必要なのは

and taking action

人々が立ち上がり

to reclaim the meaning of peace.

行動を取って

It's not a dirty word.

平和の意味を再定義することです

It's hard work every single day.

悪いことではありません

And if each of us

毎日頑張ってやるのです

who cares about the different things we care about

もし 大切な物事を

got up off our butts

気にかける一人ひとりが

and volunteered

重い腰を上げて

as much time as we could,

出来る限り

we would change this world,

ボランティアをすれば

we would save this world.

世界を変え

And we can't wait for the other guy. We have to do it ourselves.

世界を救うでしょう
