  • That's really quite amazing in 1998 Aggressive Rollerblading.

  • You probably have heard of it if you're old enough.

  • If not, you don't even know what I'm talking about.

  • I'm David Hoffman, filmmaker, and I made a feature documentary about aggressive Rollerbladers in 1998 and this is a clip from that, and this shows the New Yorkers.

  • Now let me just tell you a little bit of background.

  • So in 1993 9 million kids were rollerblading in line skating.

  • There were competitions that we're headed towards the Olympics.

  • X Games had a whole section on aggressive rollerblading.

  • They were stars who made 500 1000 a 1,000,000 more.

  • It was an amazingly growing sport that died.

  • I'm going to tell you about that after the clip.

  • So this guy in Silicon Valley, one of the Silicon Valley, great entrepreneurs.

  • His son is a Rollerblade ER, and he wants to make a documentary, and the kid never made one.

  • So the guy says to me, Look, I'll pay for the documentary, you make it, and if you use my son, that would be much appreciated.

  • Of course it's a dream for filmmaker to get the money to make a film, But for me to make a film, I have to like the characters.

  • And what did I know about these guys after I studied them?

  • They hated school.

  • They made fun of pretty much school, and everything else involved intelligence.

  • They drank before on the rage.

  • They watch a lot of porn.

  • You mostly hung out with each other.

  • It seemed having fun.

  • But life's not about fun.

  • When you're 16 you gotta learn a craft, learn a skill that was a negative.

  • Where was the positive?

  • And I had to find it or it could not make the movie will.

  • They weren't the athletes there with the big muscle men.

  • They were mostly little guys and they were stars.

  • They were athletic in their own space, and the world was starting to look at them.

  • Girls were starting to notice.

  • These boys on one of the girls look for skill, finesse and courage.

  • So there's a lot of blood, a lot of broken heads and broken knees because these guys have approved themselves and I saw a lot of injuries shocking.

  • They were brave.

  • They knew they were gonna get hurt without a helmet.

  • Stupidest damn thing in the world, but they didn't wear helmets.

  • Okay, I find what's good about him, and I understand what's bad.

  • I'm going to show it a little bit.

  • I'm gonna make this documentary.

  • How do we do it?

  • Well, there's this national competition.

  • The essay, The American Skaters Association has a big competition in Florida, and two of the great teams are New York and L.

  • New York Street Guys Puerto Rican and Dominican Republic out Salvador mostly, but also whites and lower class poor kids come out of streets skating the streets of New York.

  • He's a tough guys and they're real New Yorkers, and I'm a New Yorker.

  • Upper class, lots of money and girls and everything, totally different cultures.

  • R fR has some real stars, some guys who are making a lot of money.

  • Terrific People treated me beautifully, and this is their story.

  • This is what made their culture, why this didn't become massive.

  • I don't know.

  • After the clip, What became of these guys at me and the movie?

  • The audience didn't love seeing stupid boys so that we never went anywhere except Showtime were very popular and kind of a collector movie for filmmakers.

  • What happened to them?

  • Well, every one of those guys you see succeeded in there for they succeeded at becoming paid as skaters.

  • And then you succeeded in their adult life.

  • I don't follow all of them, but the ones I follow have families.

  • Good jobs don't skate.

  • I don't think skating New York City streets is not since you could see without a helmet.

  • Jesus.

  • The dissolute boys did beautifully.

  • Um uh, every one of them did.

  • Okay.

  • I was glad to see that.

  • What happened to the sport?

  • Who knows?

  • Why did that sport die?

  • Well, the skateboarders did not like the Rollerbladers and there was a lot of conflict.

  • They're not caused by the rollerbladers.

  • From what I could tell skated start the role of Ezra.

  • Weak little wimps.

  • Skateboarding was really where it's at and skateboarding survived rollerblading.

  • I don't know.

  • Another story in the United States of a sport that was on the rise like this.

  • Huge conferences, trade shows with the 1000 companies all gone.

  • So I can't explain that.
