  • My name is Dennis Holsten and i'm from the National Federation of the Blind.

  • Stereotyping...people have a lot of perceptions of blind people and it's really

  • subconscious because you're around blind people all the time

  • but society kind of

  • promotes this idea that blind people are

  • less capable or need to be taken care of,

  • or you need to be extra sensitive on what you say or in things of that nature and

  • it's kinda promoted on the subconscious level so a lot of people have these

  • stereotypes about blind people

  • and some of them know it and some of them don't even realize that they know it

  • soul when they confront blind people they tend to

  • treat them

  • as less then equal

  • by doing various things like talking to another person that may be with them

  • instead of talking to directly to them,

  • unnecessarily changing around their words, avoiding certain words that they

  • may think offend blind people

  • and otherwise maybe a group of people getting quiet when a blind

  • person walks by because of it's an uncomfortable experience,

  • things of that nature and it goes on and on

  • so I think stereotypes are subconsciously built into people's mindsets based on

  • how society functions.
