  • It's September, the year 2000 and the world is in the grip of Wizard fever.

  • With J.

  • K.

  • Rowling spellbinding Siri's of novels set to make the leap from page to screen.

  • Life is about to change.

  • For one young boy looking back at his time of Hogwarts, Daniel Radcliffe gives sky movies a rare insight into his life.

  • That Harry Potter.

  • Whatever opportunities I get for the rest of my life, 99% of them you can trace it back to the fact that I got this amazing job when I was 10.

  • School wasn't really a place I particularly enjoyed being.

  • I yeah, I mean, basically, all my school report said more or less the same thing for my teachers.

  • Will we really like down?

  • But he's useless.

  • I was really upset one day, and my mom said to me, You have a dang you've got You've got social skills, but they don't count.

  • You know, I really didn't feel like they did.

  • I certainly have no aspirations towards acting.

  • There's a LL this stuff sometimes get told about myself from, you know, sometimes journalists say I really wanted to act from the age of five and well, yeah, when I was five, I wanted to act in when I was six.

  • I wanted to be in the Army when I was seven.

  • I wanted to be an astronaut when I was, you know?

  • You know, it wasn't like I think I saw it.

  • I saw a pantomime production of Aladdin when I was five.

  • I turned my mom.

  • So I wanna be an actor.

  • Just looked originator.

  • Remember when I was nine and going to a particularly awful trotted school and just kidding?

  • Yeah, I was doing really badly.

  • The work at that point wasn't particular popular with a couple of my teachers, Adam on because I was disruptive.

  • Not in a malicious way, Justin as a set because I was so hyper Andi kind of excitable on.

  • Couldn't concentrate on anything.

  • Um, on.

  • I'm never my the woman Sue Latimer, who then became my agent.

  • She said, Well, they're auditioning the doing auditions for David Copperfield moment.

  • You know, why don't you send him up for that?

  • Just cause that's an experience.

  • The experience of auditioning it's not something that anyone else in the class will have had.

  • So why don't you You know send him, Send him up for that.

  • And that way, he'll have something a bit different to talk about.

  • School, something he'll have done that no one else has.

  • No one thought.

  • I get it.

  • I done one school play when I was again About five or six.

  • Where it was a production of Nellie the elephant.

  • And I was a monkey in the background home on Dhe s.

  • Oh, yeah.

  • So they sent me up.

  • No, no, I get it.

  • And I was one of the first kids they saw.

  • I ended up getting 321 Excellent.

  • So Damn, we're trying some glass and hold your head up a little bit.

  • Turn over this way to run back here.

  • Remember?

  • Apparently, when Maggie Smith got was masterly Potter she having been in David Copperfield with May.

  • I told him about me, and that was recommended.

  • May on dhe.

  • So I kind of owe a big Really My Can you imagine the look?

  • And, um, we're gonna go space if we were like, that was bloody brilliant.

  • Thank you for that assessment, Mr Weasley.

  • Perhaps it would be more useful if ever two transfigured Mr Potter in yourself into a pocket watch that we wonder if you might be on time.

  • We got lost then perhaps a map.

  • I trust you don't need one to find your seats.

  • Way began preproduction on Harry Potter in October 1999.

  • We began to look for Harry Ron than her mining, and we looked and we looked and we looked.

  • People picked the most romantic part of that story, which is that I was suddenly spotted in a theater.

  • And then it was, that was it.

  • But it wasn't like that at all.

  • I keep trying to tell the full story people, and then they just keep, have just used a good bit was a bit scary, given that we were about to start filming Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in September, and we didn't have the lead character.

  • Apparently, when the casting director said, You know who do you want to play Harry or what kind of void you want to play?

  • Harry Chris Columbus picked up a copy of the David Copperfield on said, I want to a boy like this and I want to audition this boy.

  • I've heard what is very, very flattering on, um on dhe.

  • So they originally the deal was to do I think a ll six or seven over.

  • There was nothing to do.

  • Six movies, all to be filmed in Los Angeles.

  • And when my parents heard the terms of what it will be signing on for, they said, No way That's far too big a disruption to his life that would just, you know, not not on that went away in a stroke of magic worthy of Harry himself.

  • The opportunity for Daniel to play Potter didn't go away for long after the deal, then changed his signing on for two films to be filmed in England.

  • There were lots of strange coincidences that were happening at the time that my parents were doing.

  • Okay, maybe this is something we should let him, or at least audition for the final.

  • Obviously, of all those coincidences were sitting in the theater and having David Heyman and Steve Clovis, the screenwriter sitting in the row in front of a production of stones in his pockets on um and yeah, that was that.

  • I remember David kept around looking at May during the production, and I was just going.

  • This bloke keeps staring at me.

  • You know, I have no idea who he waas.

  • And then I remembered my parent's sort of any interval rushing me upstairs and taking me outside and hiding.

  • We were hiding behind a pillow.

  • I had no idea why.

  • I have just my mama DATs to debating going.

  • I believe we go.

  • You know, this is you know, you know he's gonna ask questions.

  • What is going on?

  • You know, I was still no idea what's going on.

  • And then we went back into second half.

  • I met David, I think, just before the second half started for the first time on.

  • Then the next day, they David called and said, Look, please, will you let me audition for us?

  • At which point my dad said I can He can audition.

  • I'm still really know, thinking that I'd get it.

  • I think you know, by this point, there were only about two months away from the start filming.

  • So I've always said it was a mixture of desperation and myself.

  • Thanks.

  • You know, But I ended up getting a part.

  • Okay?

  • I never thought to look in here.

  • I check this out tongue for a place of light reading.

  • This is like Shut up.

  • It still comes around that corner any second now we are dead meat.

  • It's screen tests will be the first time I met Dad and Emma.

  • You remember it really well.

  • I also saw another version with different run a different potential room, which was really way to say that.

  • I mean, just just thinking kind of how easily kind of that kid's got the part He was.

  • He was really good other.

  • He was.

  • He was pays better than me.

  • When I got the part, we had a photo session with Terry O'Neill, which is our first photo.

  • Shoot me, Rupert and Emma together.

  • And I was referred to as that The boy Rupert was fun.

  • It was the other boy.

  • I never was ready to go for the whole thing on.

  • Dhe was fair enough.

  • You know what?

  • You know what I mean on Dhe.

  • And then we got sent to a the aptly named Landmark Hotel, which is where we spent three days sort of in hiding.

  • And we did a press conference than a different hotel on Dhe and that that press conference was the first time that I was like.

  • Okay, this is quite big deals.

  • Really.

  • How you feel about hoping a lot of payments?

  • Um, I thought about it.

  • No, really, You get the role I tried.

  • E remember, there was a bit of suffering that press about why they cast this boy who doesn't really even know anything about the film because they'd ask me anything about books because it asked me a question in the press conference.

  • I think it was a question.

  • Something like, You know, Lord Voldemort's real name.

  • No idea.

  • At that point, of course, I have had second, but rectum it.

  • But I remember her and so on.

  • Emma Rupert very, very sweetly, both trying to write down his neck, really slide it towards me.

  • And of course, we all thought we were being really subtle.

  • But of course, here there's a room full of 100 press in front of us.

  • So you can't really get away with that.

  • And I just remember sitting in that room at the landmark, just thinking got read.

  • These books now really could get stuck in, and I did.

  • And by the time I think by the time we'd had we got to our first day of actual filming.

  • Red.

  • I was on the fourth book already, which is much, much faster than I ever read anything before s Oh, yeah, I was I was.

  • But starting up very, very quickly, it was a snake.

  • I remember just being so excited and they're just being so many people.

  • And, you know, the whole of that first movie was just like a blood.

  • It's kind of I was so excited every single day.

  • Attend your 11 11.

  • So you just you are absolutely just living from one second to the next, and it's all fantastic.

  • It's fun.

  • I do maintain there's no place more fun for a 12 year old boy on a film set.

  • It's just great because it's, you know, it's it's mad and everyone there's not just of the play within.

  • Climb on and you know who his it was.

  • I loved it.

  • It was It was great, right?

  • For years.

  • Remember that first day that the thing that was strange was that people were asking for my autograph?

  • Some of the other kids coming off the train on dhe.

  • Yeah, I remember.

  • They date.

  • They are some old scruff.

  • David Heyman came up to me and said, Dan, I'm going to be a piece of voice met your signature shorter which, like didn't and I should have much interest in D.

  • J or something like that, but it never drink.

  • The only thing that's happened now is that rather than doing the deep just like a day I now well, I sort of flourish.

  • That's the ass is exciting.

  • My signature gets otherwise it is just me writing my name in my terrible scroll handwriting attending his last ever Harry Potter premiere.

  • The man whose story this'll waas Ladies and gentlemen, Daniel, I just saw Sonny.

  • I just always like that, you know, that's what I thought.

  • I just thought this is weird, but no in a negative way.

  • Not like Oh, wow, this is really gonna I can't cope this pressure just that was silly and funny.

  • It's very hard when you when you are in the middle of something this big to fully appreciate the the way it because it's always such a part of my life that I don't notice when it takes over the rest of other people's lives for, like, a few weeks a year when it becomes, You know, the posters are everywhere in the film's coming, and it's a really big deal.

  • There's little all those sort of the pre release hype and stuff going on, eh?

  • So it's always yet, but certainly that I had absolutely no clue that it was gonna be so huge.

  • I'm still getting Thio the out of school man.

  • That really was a huge incentive.

  • I was obviously still having tuition all set.

  • But just not being not being in school was massive and having to, you know, do all this other stuff.

  • It it seemed like I never really even thought about certain.

  • Don't remember thinking about If I did think about it, it would have just been a bit odd, but we had a great reaction to it as a family.

  • Any time we saw a poster with me on it, I just stand in front of it.

  • And I have to take me a lot really touristy kind of things, do I suppose?

  • But yeah, I mean, it was we didn't ever find it.

  • We've just found it, and I think I've always found it hilarious that people that I'm suddenly on posters and I'm certainly you know, some.

  • Just the other day, somebody sent me a picture of their son standing with a life size Lego version of myself that I've been not like a Lego head, but that had been built out of many pieces of Lego.

  • And that stuff still is just really funny.
