  • morning flu season is here on the holidays, air approaching.

  • One more reason to break out the hand sanitizer in those disinfecting wipes.

  • But should you do they really work?

  • Dr.

  • Joe from the Fox Medical team joining us live this morning to talk about the pros and the cons Look atyou.

  • You came prepared this morning up.

  • I did.

  • I did.

  • Uh, yeah, it's interesting because we use it so much.

  • I mean, you could see mine.

  • That's almost empty.

  • And again, it's very effective.

  • And in fact, it's so effective that in one study they found that Children who used it just four times a day decreased absenteeism by about 25%.

  • So again, good for school age kids.

  • You know what you really want to do that was used it before you touch your face.

  • But think about it.

  • We touch our face so often we put our cell phones to our face.

  • You don't want to use it constantly.

  • Certainly you want to look for 60% alcohol.

  • Those are the ones that are most effective, and again it has to dry on your hands what it's doing.

  • It's killing the bacteria by making it dry.

  • So if you wipe it off, you've really kind of just decreased its ability to do its thing.

  • When you look at resistance overall, it doesn't seem to cause bacterial resistance because of the weight's killing and reducing the amount of bacteria.

  • It's effective against lots of pathogens.

  • So, yeah, I mean, the infectious disease expert we spoke to says, Hey, use it and use it often.

  • Okay, so I mean nothing to worry about, because I think that's the one big thing that people are most concerned about because for a while there they were saying, Don't buy this soap with the anti bacterial in it and stop buying all this stuff with extra antibacterial because what we're doing is we're just creating super germs, so we don't need to worry about that.

  • No, that's absolutely true.

  • The antibacterial soaps are different than the UK agency.

  • Hand sanitizer is just alcohol.

  • You do not want to buy the antibacterial soaps because it really aren't any more effective.

  • And they are causing more problems than they are causing.

  • Good and in fact, when you look at washing your hands over and over again, you're more likely to get dermatitis or that cracking of your hands.

  • The hand sanitizers are milder on your hands, but you might want to use a moisturizer Now.

  • The downside is, if there's a diarrheal illness going around hand, sanitizers may not be effective.

  • You know, when you look at Noro Virus that cruise ship fires that we hate, it's not effective.

  • So and C.

  • Difficile, that's another one that's kind of spreading around, not effective.

  • So So you do have to kind of you probably have to mix and match with that hand washing overall.

  • And you know, there are people out there who say, Hey, dirt is good.

  • Dernis Good Captain is probably good when you're out in your own backyard.

  • But if you're in a confined space with a bunch of kids that have colds and coughs and that you really have to just probably be a little bit more careful or you're in the grocery store or somewhere where there's a lot of people that are touching stuff because if you touch those germs have been, touch yourself in the face or eat.

  • That's when you're probably gonna get that bacteria.

  • All right, good advice and good to know everybody needs to sanitize up.

  • Thanks so much.

  • Dr Joe.

  • Good to see you.
