  • Hello and welcome to the program.

  • The Rams are back in action this weekend after the international break.

  • Preston, visiting Pride part, will look ahead to that game a little bit later with Martin Fisher and share Nicholson Withers in the studio.

  • And we've also got a first look.

  • Exclusive for you on an interview with Darby manager Phillip Cocky not to be missed.

  • We'll get to that a little later.

  • We'll say hello to the boys.

  • First of all, welcome fish to the show for the first time after a hero.

  • And thanks for the invite.

  • I I guess that's kick off them.

  • You're sort of assessment of the season so far for Darby.

  • Yeah, I mean, what always 16th after 16 games?

  • I'm not looking really at our points.

  • Total is the difference between is in the top six, which is seven points.

  • I think, in my opinion, we're underachieving. 00:00:58.740 --> 00:01:6.850 I thought around about now wasn't expecting anything ridiculous I thought would be about 10th a maybe four points outside that the top six. 00:01:7.280 --> 00:01:8.430 So work to be done. 00:01:8.580 --> 00:01:16.670 Um, but it's inevitable, given the fact that Manager is new to the club and new to English football as a so we'll hear from the manager a little bit later.

  • Who's had an interesting, A tricky job, but time?

  • Shane hasn't it?

  • I think it's fascinating judging what people expected Darby to do against how they're doing because you talk to some people and okay, we expected the season off.

  • Consolidation, rebuilding.

  • Some people expected the top six, so people are going to feel very differently.

  • For some reason, funds and those are like, I suppose we think we have a divine right to be in the playoffs every single season.

  • The one about the championship out outfitters, you know, taking in consideration the new manager coming in and with the off field problems that we've got as well idea, like fishing.

  • I thought Top 10 I thought, would be doing well in on this stage of the season, but we're doing okay, but we are underachieving, like he says. 00:01:58.740 --> 00:02:5.480 I do see, you know, slight improvements in the last three or four games, you know, creating more chances, looking a little bit more stable of that. 00:02:5.480 --> 00:02:8.290 But I just think we need that stability within the team itself. 00:02:8.400 --> 00:02:9.480 You know, I've said it before. 00:02:9.630 --> 00:02:12.410 I think we just need to see the back four on the goalkeeper.

  • You know, playing for 234 weeks a session.

  • And, you know, hopefully then we can build on one or two clean shoots.

  • It started so well at Huddersfield.

  • Let me out of the season.

  • But actually the sort of the story since has Bean this disparity between the way from the home, a form that we've been so good at.

  • Pride Park results, performances Not so on the right.

  • Yeah, I mean, it's almost like a mirror image, isn't it?

  • I think at home we've lost one of a away.

  • We've won one of eight.

  • At the moment we're winning regular at home and keeping clean sheets away from home.

  • We're losing regularly and we can't score a goal.

  • So it's pretty easy to see whether where the problems are, How we solve that problem is difficult.

  • I think Shin it says you've got to get some kind of consistency and team selection.

  • The manager hasn't been helped by so many injuries.

  • I mean, we don't know yet what the situation is with with Matt Clark either.

  • I don't know if there's any update on that, but, uh that's disappointing because I think him and Curtis Davis was just beginning to suggest that there's some kind of combination there that could work to good effect.

  • And I think we'd be like, just in front of those two in the in the holding role in a diamond.

  • I'm really pleased we've got the diamond back because I was a big fan of it whenever it was used last season, which was all too rare.

  • Book was used magnificently.

  • It leads, of course, so I think that formation suits is.

  • Let's talk about Matt Clark is Fisher's.

  • There hasn't been a look that on his condition, but you would expect Shane, with the way, went off against Forest.

  • An injury.

  • It looks like he's picked up that he will miss a bit of time, and it comes back to your point about trying to get in several times.

  • You can't when you keep getting injuries like this room.

  • Yeah, I mean, everything that can go wrong, I've said before, seems to be going wrong for a manager in this stuff, Darby.

  • The moment you know, just look like when you do start together, the team do start to start improving something like this happens and then you know it's back to square one again. 00:03:58.250 --> 00:04:1.360 But we've got a decent squad, you know, the likes of George Evans coming on. 00:04:1.360 --> 00:04:6.840 We saw him come on last season on filled in its centre half this time he went into the centre midfield role. 00:04:6.840 --> 00:04:8.450 So we have the players. 00:04:8.720 --> 00:04:11.340 I just think the players just other keeps saying I keep spent on about it.

  • We just need stability.

  • We need that same team going out there just to be able to build them relationships with each other who has stood out for you both so far.

  • Give me a couple of names.

  • Well, you've got the advantage over me.

  • And as far as you've seen all the games off, I've seen them sporadically.

  • Uh, the last time I saw them was against looting.

  • And that the outstanding performer that day was grand Chinni.

  • Who?

  • You look at that performance, you said Wow.

  • Why have we been waiting so long to see?

  • And he was here, there everywhere, eh?

  • So that's been a positive for May I'm liking be lik no, Tom Lawrence's is Marmite, But I think if we can play him in the right position when he scored those goals rips, which he was playing through the middle on Broening it defenders from there rather than having to beat somebody wide and get crosses in.

  • If we playing through the middle, I think he can be a real asset this season. 00:04:58.320 --> 00:05:0.800 And I think the return of Chris Martin has been has been great. 00:05:0.800 --> 00:05:1.750 I've always been a big fan. 00:05:1.750 --> 00:05:4.570 If you can play in and around him, will create chances. 00:05:4.570 --> 00:05:7.980 So I think they'll be the place while except on, Well, that's the Christmas stories. 00:05:7.980 --> 00:05:9.190 But really, what changed you? 00:05:9.190 --> 00:05:10.500 Would you get for a while again?

  • Chinny, We needed Chinni to come in.

  • At the time that you did do, Andi gave us exactly what he was missing.

  • That little bite in midfield.

  • Eso eso yeah, go with him.

  • I also think Tom Lawrence, I think when he played that number 10 role, I thought it was excellent.

  • But, you know, you know, if we've got that like the likes of Wayne Rooney coming into the squad as well, who people would suggest he's gonna be the number 10 role, he's gonna get moved around again.

  • Some Lawrence's So you know we have to wait and see Jane and come back into the team.

  • Forget his mistake is just is an exceptional player.

  • He really is.

  • The assists that he creates for words and a chance he creates for the team is phenomenal, and I think you've got to have a player like boat.

  • If you're playing a diamond, you've got to get with from you from your fullback.

  • Seven years.

  • Bogle.

  • In my opinion, there aren't there aren't many better than him in the championship of the moment on, I think. 00:05:56.170 --> 00:06:2.950 On the left hand side, Scott Malone is far happier going forward than defending, and I think Max Lowe is probably the same. 00:06:2.950 --> 00:06:7.230 But you've got to have a bee like figure to cover either side when those two were bombing forward. 00:06:7.460 --> 00:06:11.350 So on paper, that system with those kind of players could work.

  • What we got to get at some stage is an away win because we're winning games than losing.

  • You've got to start winning twos and threes and four games in a row to start making an impression on the Yeah, I think as an ex player is sometimes is no reason for it.

  • You can't understand why it's happening, you know, and sometimes with questions has the play as the players when they play, you know, Did they like that bit of confidence that mentality play from the 30,000 will show that they have.

  • So whatever it is going away from home at the moment we seem to be struggling.

  • The manager will be scratching.

  • Is that I'm sure it really will be.

  • They just need something just happen.

  • We just get that screw for a goal, that screw if you win and hopefully, then we can kick start now.

  • It's been almost six months since Philip Kaku was named Darby County manager. 00:06:57.400 --> 00:07:2.700 The focus has understandably being on results and performances on the pitch, but there's plenty happening. 00:07:2.790 --> 00:07:7.480 Behind the scenes to Kaku is reshaping the setup Atmore Farm. 00:07:7.480 --> 00:07:11.900 He's now effectively overseeing things from the first team down to the under 15.

  • We've sat down with the Darby managers to talk all about it.

  • The full interview is a must watch.

  • It'll be available a little later, but here's a taste of what the boss has had to say.

  • The main thing, uh, what we try to build it, said Derby County model.

  • Ah, so that let's say a young player will arrive next season under nine.

  • They go through all the age groups, makes his steps.

  • So for him, he knows every aspect of football on every core value off.

  • They'll be counting football club when he comes and arrived in the first team.

  • If you'll make the right steps so you would use the jumps to the next age group and especially the lodging to the first, I think, um, I love more and product off.

  • The academy can end up playing in the first team, and that's the main, the main goal in Target off the club.

  • So that states to Maine.

  • Thing we work on, uh, not not only myself as a manager, but everybody within the club.

  • So we have to align, go chisel, players, medical star, physical.

  • So everybody works.

  • I have to do their part on, have to speak the same language, know whether we want to achieve and how we're going to do it.

  • So, yeah, that's the Think sometime on a lot of meetings talk a lot about our vision.

  • It has to be a club vision.

  • Yeah. 00:08:57.210 --> 00:09:3.920 When when I started um, after a few weeks here, uh, more form. 00:09:3.920 --> 00:09:16.040 We we put up all the coaches from 15 toe under 23 plus the stuff they can start with the or the first team on.

  • We discussed all players from under 15 to 1 23 just to get an idea of the potential destroying the weaknesses so we could work on what we had to improve.

  • What was a key asset to ITI?

  • Um, I think that was important Kickoff to make the next step.

  • Okay, how are we playing the first team?

  • How are we training?

  • What kind of physical loads that we give the players?

  • What do we expect from the mental aspect off players on DDE?

  • So we make a plan like first team.

  • What's required? 00:09:58.420 --> 00:10:6.190 So what's the standard in which position in the way we play football and then we simplify it. 00:10:6.670 --> 00:10:8.060 Toe all the age groups down. 00:10:9.040 --> 00:10:10.850 Ah, under nine.

  • So there's yeah, a lot off on our plate, but it's really good to do, and I like also the You had people who work very passionate, hear coaches.

  • You feel it's a family on dhe.

  • There's something I value a lot because all the young talents who come through out the club in the first team.

  • They come with the core values off our club and, uh, always rule will buy a few players toe, complete your team to give something extra sometimes.

  • But the players who were here for many years, yeah, they're very important for us. 00:10:59.040 --> 00:11:5.990 That's the day I'll be manager in the full interview, as I say, an absolute must watch with Philip Kaku Lots to talk about boys. 00:11:6.610 --> 00:11:11.870 And obviously, this is all geared towards getting youngsters from the academy in the first team.

  • Fish.

  • Firstly, the fans hat on.

  • It's special, isn't it?

  • When one of your own is out there?

  • Ah, pride part.

  • But there's also that the business side of it, it's a It's a cheaper way to do it quite a lucrative way to do it as well.

  • Yeah, definitely.

  • I mean, I think it's very exciting to think that for the first time in a long while, that seems to be, uh, ah, lot more thought going into the process that we're not just thinking about the first team.

  • It is about those players coming through.

  • We've got a fantastic academy, Great facilities down there.

  • But in the last five or six years, we're not seeing enough of those players, comes through the first team or even be available for selection for the first team squad.

  • Jane Bogle is the is the exception there, obviously, with Philip Kaku, one of the one of the advantages of him and one of the things that appeal to Mel Maurice, I presume, is the fact that the Dutch model is there and that they depend on that, whether it's I axel, whether it's PSB, where Philip Kaku Waas, you've got to bring those plans through because A they complain the first team.

  • But secondly, when they reach a certain point there, sellable value is enormous.

  • There's a lot of talent already.

  • We watch it regularly.

  • Shame with the 19 to the 18 and 20 threes and the likes of Jason Night Morgan particular.

  • Recently, you've been in and around the first team already this season.

  • But as we've heard from manager, it's about trying to make sure the transitions as smooth as possible.

  • I think to have someone like the manager of the football club to be involved, you know, with down to the nines open to the first team is very special and I only just being involved, actually making decisions of making plans on how they and what they should be doing.

  • So for him to be going in and speaking to them, you know that that is unheard off.

  • Hopefully, that will question all the rumors are flying around as well.

  • That's been going around over the weekend as well. 00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:2.170 It shows that you know he's here for a long state. 00:13:2.520 --> 00:13:6.060 He's got a philosophy, has got a plan on, wants to put it into action. 00:13:6.470 --> 00:13:7.390 You're quite right. 00:13:7.390 --> 00:13:11.140 We've commentated on the 23 z 18 fantastic quality.

  • You know that the club are the deuce you put down the economy, you know, all the way through there really either got some great talent and I just think it is.

  • It's a good times, but Darby County, with the important thing, is as well that probably what's happened in the past, I'm sure, is that a player that is really good at under 1718 under 19 level then gets his chance in the first team on the style of football is completely alien to them, so they've got no chance.

  • They've got all that that built up energy and nerves that are there before them.

  • When they make their first team debut, they come into the game and they think, Well, this isn't our urine For the last 567 years, I've got no chance.

  • So the theory is, is that when they step into the first team, they're playing a familiar start your plan.

  • Exactly where you play the under 19 you're on the left down side of midfield.

  • You know what to do with it and just play. 00:13:57.080 --> 00:14:1.590 And that's why a CZ well, you know, you hear a lot of the funds talk about, you know this place should go out on loan. 00:14:1.590 --> 00:14:10.280 They should do this is that it's not a simple is that after you have to get the player, let's go to the right club with the right manager who wants to play, probably similar to how we play as well.

  • You can't just farm amount to any football club, not know that are gonna be treated and dad the train and anything like that because Martin says, you know they have to come back and hopefully try and get onto the pitch out here and play without first team player.

  • So that's it, you know.

  • So as I said, it's for me.

  • It is a bright future of adult account.

  • It really is.

  • And it's a level of commitment from the club to a manager and from a manager to the club that is maybe been missing from Darby County in recent years.

  • Yes, quite probably a suggested earlier.

  • It seems that we're now going down a slightly different cook.

  • Well, a majorly different course, long term rather than short term.

  • But that doesn't necessarily mean that there shouldn't be short term success. 00:14:47.820 --> 00:15:5.700 I mean, I with my fans hat on, I would hate it if the next two seasons were, you know, middling around mid table to lower and having inconsistency regularly because we're looking after what might happen in two or three years you need obviously, you want both, and there's no reason why they can't be both. 00:15:5.710 --> 00:15:10.470 You can have success first team and still be bringing young replies through on.

  • Actually, sometimes that could be a better environment to bring you your place through your way.

  • Talk about this quite a lot.

  • You don't want to bring in a young player into a struggling team because what that might do to the psychology, that their development you have to find the balance.

  • Well, we keep spouting about Gene Vogel, don't we?

  • But Jane Boger went into a team that, you know, that was full of, you know, experience, experience.

  • Players is going into a team as well.

  • That was playing well.

  • Eso you, quite a player has to go into it.

  • It's no good.

  • Just thrown in 18 19 year old kid.

  • And the team was kind of struggling, certainly away from home, you know?

  • So although, you know when you when you are young played, you do go out.

  • But you have no fear was young player, no fear.

  • It's also for me.

  • There is this big myth about, you know, sending your kids out to play.

  • But I do feel that they have to be put into a team that's doing okay. 00:15:58.900 --> 00:16:1.410 You know that winning more than they are losing, that's for sure. 00:16:1.830 --> 00:16:2.260 Definitely. 00:16:2.570 --> 00:16:4.210 All right, let's go to the weekend. 00:16:4.210 --> 00:16:8.050 Here's how the championship table looks after the final international break of the year.

  • West Brahma top two points clear of Preston and Leeds, Nottingham Forest the fifth but do have a game in hand.

  • It's pretty tight in mid table.

  • Four points separating 11th 2/18 Darby in Amongst that 21 points from 16 games for the Rams so far.

  • That's well clear of the bottom three, which includes Middlesbrough Stoke on Dhe Bonds.

  • Lee Barnsley could have any manager in place by the time they had to Blackburn on Saturday. 00:16:42.550 --> 00:17:1.490 Michael O'Neil house his first game at Stoke at home against Wigan at the leaders host Sheffield Wednesday and on Sunday, Middlesbrough Welcome hold with pressure building on the Moor up boss Jonathan Woodgate On the Darby is the visit off Preston. 00:17:1.490 --> 00:17:10.050 You're having a fantastic season so far, A big fan of how they've done things in recent seasons that seem to sort of Hoover up the better place from from lower down the league's.

  • And they have a manager and Alex Neal, who knows what it takes to get out of the division.

  • Surprise package A little bit, a little bit surprised, their second.

  • Not surprised that they kicked on again this season.

  • A CZ you say Alex Neil, good pedigree went with nourishing 2015 via the playoffs, a bit surprised that Norwich got rid of him just after relegation when they were probably six or seven in the championship the following season.

  • But I think you know is a Scot is hungry.

  • I've interviewed him a few times.

  • I like the way he speaks.

  • I like what he gets his players to do, and as you suggest that that their moves in the transfer market have been very shrewd, I mean that they even picked up David Nugent.

  • Didn't they hear on after he'd left the club here?

  • And he is playing pretty much the role that he played for his last season.

  • He's kind of coming off the bench every now and again, but you can imagine him in the dressing room being a really good influence as well.

  • Very good at home.

  • Preston. 00:17:59.670 --> 00:18:0.720 Not so clever away. 00:18:0.930 --> 00:18:4.350 So we'll see how the fan on Saturday against is a problem. 00:18:4.790 --> 00:18:7.530 Well, I mean 31 goals, I think, in 17 again. 00:18:7.530 --> 00:18:11.120 So they got a You have a decent record, a very good manager.

  • Do you think that to see it seem like pressing as high as they all you know, tells a lot about the standard of the championship.

  • This is I don't think this is nowhere near is as good as it has been for the last two or three years, that's for sure.

  • But you know, that's why that's why you really want us to get on that room now because that is there for the tape.

  • Is it really is there for taking?

  • I think anything now that in the top 12 to 14 16 even goes on 345 game on beat and run, then you're going to start cleaning back off the table.

  • I think I think my hope is that by the time a certain person arrives in the club early January, we are within striking distance of the top 63 or four points outside and then maybe not asking too much of in book. 00:18:53.180 --> 00:19:0.570 But maybe with him on the pitch and off the pitch, we might just be able to generate that enthusiasm and that that spark that lights up the team. 00:19:0.720 --> 00:19:7.110 When we do go in one of those runs and for once, instead of having a miserable January February March, we actually have 1/2 decent one on. 00:19:7.110 --> 00:19:9.310 We're hitting the form of the right kind of time. 00:19:9.320 --> 00:19:11.250 Wayne Rooney, of course, on the horizon.

  • W have a few games ago, and until he gets here, I think we could take a look at what the Rams have on the way between now on the turn of the year.

  • A couple of tricky games in there, actually, particularly Fulham.

  • Although Chef of Wednesday I've had a decent season so far, Shane is the big task going to be this hoodoo off, starting to get some results away from home.

  • It doesn't matter who we look at, who we talk about every game in the championship.

  • Aziz problems.

  • It really does.

  • And certainly when you in a position where we're at the moment because expectation levels of us, we want to be in the top six, you know, So every game we come up against, it's gonna be difficult, you know?

  • But I keep spouting about we need stability.

  • We have to have stability in the tea. 00:19:52.140 --> 00:20:0.140 I think having Wayne Rooney in and around the place now will give the place a lift that we'll find the extra 10 15 20% because it's waiting really on. 00:20:0.140 --> 00:20:0.630 Why not? 00:20:0.630 --> 00:20:2.350 You know, just like the front line part of me. 00:20:2.350 --> 00:20:10.760 When he came in, there was this thing ever wanted to impress him and, as they should do for the manager joint to me as well, because it because he's been a welcome players.

  • But just have waiting Rooney in and around, floating around the training ground.

  • I mean, wow, you're amazing.

  • I don't know how much that with Wayne really through the years and you work a match of the day.

  • But But what sort of how do you engage this?

  • That the fact that weight rooms coming to play for Darby County?

  • Well, I I still can't believe it on Dhe.

  • I remember driving back from Huddersfield on the opening Monday of the season, and obviously you're excited because the performance and the results and then around the ground in the away on that night, there was all this talk about Rooney, Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney and I thought my compatriot cometary Wayne Rooney carpentry made a couple calls getting back into the car and there was more substance to it.

  • And then, of course, by the next day, he's here.

  • Incredible, incredible. 00:20:57.540 --> 00:21:0.580 Obviously, there's a temptation to think of Wayne Rooney and his absolute people. 00:21:0.580 --> 00:21:4.820 We're not getting that, but we're getting a player that has seen it done it on Dhe. 00:21:5.060 --> 00:21:7.260 We'll just inspire the players on the pitch. 00:21:7.270 --> 00:21:10.050 He will contribute as well in the championship.

  • Wayne Rooney, even a 70% of what he used to be a will still be one of the best players in the championship wherever he plays on the pitch.

  • But particularly, he's up top.

  • If you look at Ashley Cole, who was 38 I think Waiting's for 34 just turned 34 is what it is.

  • One of his main strip for me was his energy and his passion for the game.

  • You know, obviously, that would be more economical now with his game.

  • But yeah, so have his cute nurse.

  • These intelligence in that final third as well will be exceptional, I'm sure probably Chris Martin or whoever plays out front.

  • We'll you know we'll Exelon would be excited about it if actually to sort of imagine yourself.

  • Is the 18 year old sending us the nor even the 24 or the 30 year old Chen Nicholson, on the play like that came to the club with his resume with his ability.

  • How do you felt?

  • How will the Darby plays be feeling about this? 00:22:0.340 --> 00:22:1.880 They will try and take it. 00:22:1.890 --> 00:22:2.840 Take it in stride. 00:22:2.840 --> 00:22:3.630 But I mean, is it? 00:22:3.630 --> 00:22:5.800 Listen, Is a global store is huge. 00:22:5.980 --> 00:22:8.850 I mean, so I mean me as any to your kid for me. 00:22:8.850 --> 00:22:10.620 I want to impress him by just booting him.
