  • Hi everyone and welcome to this new video,

  • today,

  • on the occasion of international women's day, I will tell you about women's rights

  • but before that I ask you to subscribe to our channel

  • and activated the notification bell to never miss our next publications.

  • Let's start with the title of this day.

  • UN (United Nations Organization) Talks About International Women's Day

  • (this is also the official title)

  • while France tends to favor international women's rights day instead.

  • Of course the difference is not trivial and we let everyone (and each) position themselves according to their preferences.

  • In this video, we have chosen to keep the title of the United Nations

  • but we do not make it into a political position.

  • International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 each year

  • by women's groups around the world.

  • It is also celebrated at the United Nations and, in many countries, it is a national holiday.

  • International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women who made history.

  • It has its roots in the struggle waged by women for centuries

  • to participate in society on an equal basis with men.

  • In Greek antiquity,

  • Lysistrata launched a "sex strike" against the men to end the war.

  • During the French Revolution,

  • Parisian women asking for "freedom, equality, fraternity"

  • marched on Versailles to demand the right to vote for women.

  • We cannot ignore that all over the world,

  • women experience discrimination and violence.

  • In many States, discrimination is enshrined in both criminal and civil law relating to marriage, inheritance and property.

  • But even in countries where women have been able to achieve equality before the law,

  • this is often illusory in practice.

  • So, is it women's rights?

  • Women's rights are rights, theoretical or real,

  • claimed for women and girls in many societies around the world

  • and form the basis of the women's rights movement of the 19th century

  • as well as the 20th century feminist movement.

  • In some countries, these rights are institutionalized or supported by law,

  • local custom and behavior, while in other countries they can be ignored or suppressed.

  • They differ from broader notions of human rights

  • by declaring that there are inherent historical inequalities that hinder the exercise of the rights of women and girls,

  • in favor of men and boys.

  • The defense of these rights is an objective in order to achieve a more egalitarian society.

  • The issues commonly associated with notions of women's rights include, but are not limited to,

  • rights: bodily integrity and autonomy, not to be subjected to sexual violence, to vote,

  • to be elected, to enter into a legal contract,

  • to be seen as equal to husband and father in the family, to work,

  • to have access to fair wages and equal pay,

  • to control its reproduction (contraception and abortion),

  • to own property, to access education.
