In this episode, we're going to take a look at what 5G is, why it's better than 4G, and which companies are leading the 5G charge.

今回は 5G とは何か、なぜ 4G よりも優れているのか、そして 5G 技術において他社をリードしている企業について見ていきたいと思います。

5G is a new cellular wireless standard that promises to bring faster internet speeds to mobile devices and bring more services to market.

5G とは新しい携帯無線規格で、携帯デバイスの接続速度を改善しサービスの充実を実現します。

But what is 5G exactly?

でも 5G は正確にはどのような物でしょうか？

The term stands for the fifth generation standard, or 5G, for mobile telecommunications.

5 世代規格、もしくは携帯コミュニケーションにおいては特に 5G と呼ばれるもので

5G uses a higher frequency band of the wireless spectrum called millimeter wave that allows data to be transferred much faster than the lower frequency band dedicated to 4G.

ミリ波と呼ばれる周波数の高い携帯無線規格を使用することで、周波数の低い 4G データの通信速度を速くしています。

One of the key benefits from this new wireless standard is that 5G speeds will be up to 100X faster than 4G.

この新しいワイヤレス規格の主な利点としては、4G よりも最大 100 倍のスピードが挙げられます。

And it will help create new services and technologies that wouldn't be possible without it.

これによって、他の回線スピードでは不可能な新しいサービスを実現することができるのです。

For example, the vast Internet of Things industry will need faster and more reliable networks to bring about driverless cars, industrial automation, and connected smart cities, which are all in their infant stages right now.

例えば、モノのインターネットはほとんどが速くて安定した接続を必要としており、それによって自動運転、全自動化、スマート都市の推進といった現在黎明期にある技術の発達を進めます。

Some estimates put the total amount of worldwide Internet of Things devices at 75 billion by 2025.

2025 年までにはモノのインターネットのデバイス数は 750 億種類にまで増えるだろうという予測もあります。

But before we get there, wireless carriers need to build out massive 5G networks.

しかし、サービスプロバイダはその前に巨大な 5G ネットワークを建設する必要が出てきます。

Thankfully, many of them have already started taking steps to get there.

それでも、すでにこのプロセスが始まっているのは前向きです。

Verizon has the goals of launching 5G in 30 cities by the end of this year, and has already flipped the 5G switch in several large metro areas.

Verizon は今年末までに 30 都市で 5G サービスを開始することを目標としており、すでにいくつかの都市部に 5G スイッチを設置しています。

The company has a lot of incentive to get 5G up and running as fast as possible, considering the new wireless standard's massive potential.

当然ながら、企業として考えた時にこの新システムをできるだけ早く実践可能にしていくことは大きなメリットがあります。

The CEO of Verizon's consumer division has said that by 2035, 5G will enable $12.3 trillion of global economic output and support 22 million jobs worldwide.

Verizon の消費者担当部門主任は、2035 年までに 5G は世界規模で 12 兆 3 千億ドルの経済効果を生み出し、2200 万種類の仕事をサポートすることになると話します。

 But Verizon isn't the only U.S. carrier that's betting on 5G.

しかしアメリカ国内で 5G に注目しているのは Verizon だけではありません。

AT&T has already launched 5G services in a handful of cities and plans to bring 5G to 21 markets by the end of 2019.

AT&T はすでに数都市で 5G サービスを開始しており、2019 年末までに 21 種類のマーケットに 5G を拡大させる方向でいます。

But even if wireless carriers were able to turn on 5G nationwide tomorrow, it wouldn't make much of a difference.

それでも、仮に明日国内に 5G サービスが浸透したとしてもすぐに大きな変化が出ることにはなりません。

That's because right now, there are only a handful of 5G phones available. 

なぜなら、今の時点では 5G 対応の携帯電話は数えるほどしかないからです。

Make no mistake, 5G is just around the corner for U.S. consumers.

そうは言っても、アメリカにおいては本格的な 5G サービス開始はすぐそこまで来ています。

But between network build-outs and the slow release of 5G devices, most of us won't have access to it until later next year at the earliest.

ただし、ネットワークの構築や対応デバイスの販売が送れている事から、一般に出回るのは早くても来年の末になる見込みです。

While the U.S. is closer to 5G than ever before, China is also making moves towards 5G as well.

このようにアメリカでは着々と 5G への移行が進んでいますが、中国でも同じ動きが活発になっています。

The U.S. and China view 5G as a potential technology battleground, with both countries working to become the undisputed leader for the new wireless standard.

アメリカと中国は、この新しいワイヤレス 5G の分野においてハッキリとした主導権を取るべくしのぎを削っています。

By the end of 2019, China will have about 150,000 5G cellular sites up and running, while the U.S. will have just a fraction of that.

2019 年末までに、中国は 15 万台の 5G 中継基地を設立する予定ですが、この数はアメリカの何倍にも上る数です。

One of the reasons China will be able to expand its 5G coverage so quickly is because the Chinese government is making it a top priority.

中国でここまで 5G を迅速に浸透させることができる理由には、中国政府が優先事項の一つとして全面バックアップをしている事実にあります。

China's government and wireless carriers are all working together to get 5G up and running.

ネットワークプロバイダと政府が共同で 5G の社会浸透に尽力しています。

If it succeeds, China will have more 5G users than any other country by the end of 2020.

これが成功すれば、2020 年末までには中国は世界で最も 5G ユーザーの数が多い国になるのです。

The bottom line is that 5G is almost here, and it'll be a giant step forward for internet connected devices.

基本的には 5G はすぐそこまで現実的なものとなっていて、これはインターネット接続デバイスにとっては非常に大きな一歩となります。

Consumers will reap the benefits of 5G by having lightning-fast mobile internet, and companies will benefit by offering more connected services than ever before.

消費者が期待できるのは超高速インターネット接続環境で、企業としてはネット接続サービスの数を今まで以上に増やすことが可能となるのです。
