Well, either that, or it's some cat food.

まぁそれか、キャットフード。

Anyway, do you know what we call this container? It's a can, right?

どっちにしても、僕たちがこの容器を何て呼ぶかご存知ですか？ ”can /kæn/ ” ですよね？

Now this has the same spelling as the modal 'can', and the same pronunciation, hasn't it?

さて、これって綴りは助動詞の ”can” と同じ。そして発音も同じですよね？

Or has it? Listen carefully when we ask some people in London how many languages they speak.

それとも違う？よく聴いてください。ロンドンの人に何か国語話すかを聞いてみます。

I can speak one language.

「私は 1 か国語話せます。」

I can speak two languages.

「僕は 2 か国語話せますよ。」

I can speak two languages.

「2 か国語話せます。」

I can speak two languages, English and Hindi.

「2 か国語話せますよ。英語とヒンズー語です。」

They all used the word 'can'. But they didn't pronounce it as /kæn/.

みんな、”can” という言葉を使いました。でも、/kæn/ という発音はしていませんでしたね。

Listen again. How do they pronounce it?

I can speak one language. I can speak two languages.

In fluent everyday English, when the modal auxiliary 'can' is unstressed, its pronunciation changes to /kən/.

普段、流れるように話される英語では、助動詞の ”can” は、強調されずに、発音も /kən/ に変わるんです。

'I /kæn/ speak four languages' becomes: 'I /kən/ speak four languages'.

”I /kæn/ speak four languages (＝私は4か国語話すことができる)” は、”I /kən/ speak four languages” になるんです。

This is what's known as a weak form and it can occur in questions as well.

これは、弱形というもので、質問する際も起こります。

Here are some more examples.

Can you help me bring in the shopping, please?

I can swim further than I can run.

You can succeed if you work hard.
