Hollywood Dialect Coach Figures Out Who Is Faking An American Accent

Hi everyone, my name is Jack Wallace, and I'm a dialect coach here in Los Angeles.

皆さん、こんにちは。ボクの名前はジャック・ウォレスといって、ここロサンゼルスで方言のコーチをしています。

Today we're gonna try and figure out who has a real American accent and who is faking it.

今日は、本当にアメリカ英語のアクセントで話せる人と、単にフリをしている人を見極めてみたいと思います。

One of the things that can happen when you're doing an accent is that it's terrifying, and so I'm gonna be looking out for who seems a little nervous and how thrown they are by my questions.

アクセントを真似ている人というのは、通常ドキドキしているものですから、緊張している様子の人とかボクの質問にアタフタする感じの人に着目していく形になります。

- [Interviewer] Any immediate guesses

[インタビュワー] 第一印象ではどうですか？

just based (nervous laughing) on their faces?

If I had to make a wild guess, I'd be down to two out of five right now.

Hi, my name is Teddy, and this is my natural accent.

Hi, my name's Elise, and this is my natural accent.

Hi, my name's Nadia, and this is my natural accent.

Hi, my name is Rachel, and this is my natural accent.

Hi, my name is Blake, and this is my natural accent.

どうも、ブレイクです。これがボクの普通のアクセントです。

One of the things that happens when we talk in an accent that isn't our own is that we kind of have this imposter syndrome feeling.

自分の本来のものではないアクセントで話す時には、ある種のペテン師症候群的感覚に襲われやすいんですね。

And then some people might just not like to be on camera.

まあ、そうは言ってもカメラの前に立つのが好きでない人もいますけどね。

So (laughing)!

Can you tell me about your favorite subject in school?

It would have to be history.

Just being able to kinda backtrack time and how it all lead to present time.

時間をさかのぼって見ていって、それが現代とどうつながっているかっていうのは面白いです。

Hey there Elise, how's it going?

Good.

Can you tell me about your hometown?

- This is it. - L.A.?

- Hm-mm. - Excellent.

ーうん。　－なるほどね。

What do you like most about L.A.?

The people here are really weird.

ここの人たちってすっごく変わってるから。

Can you please tell me about your hometown?

Yeah, I'm from Iowa.

Cedar Falls, small town.

Excellent, and what's the best thing about Iowa?

I would say math, 'cause I like to add.

- Great. - Yeah.

- What's it get? - Three.

Can you please tell me about your hometown?

出身地について教えてくれませんか？

I'm from a little town in Texas called Fulshear.

テキサスにある小さな町、フルシャーってところです。

Less than 1,000 people.

人口は 1000 人以下で。

So good old Teddy here, he seems pretty calm, pretty relaxed.

さて、ここのテディさんは、随分落ち着いていてリラックスした感じなんですね。

It feels like when he talks it's the way he would normally talk.

普段からこんな感じで話をするように見て取れます。

At the moment I think he's in the clear.

この時点では、彼のアクセントは本物だと思います。

Now Elise is very hesitant to talk.

エリスに関しては、かなり話したがらない様子なんですね。

Almost like she has to plan what she's about to say.

ほとんど何を話そうかその場で考えないといけないような感じで。

But when she does speak it seems to have American features.

でも、話し始めるとアメリカ人っぽい雰囲気はあるんですよね。

The jury's still out on Elise.

エリスに関しては決めかねてます。

Nadia was also one of the people that was quite nervous when she came in.

ナディアも入ってきた時点で緊張感が見て取れたんですけど、

But then when she was tell me about Iowa, it's a very specific place to choose, so either that's a good strategy or she's actually from there.

アイオワについて話した時には、場所もとても特定されたところだったし、うまい事考えて喋ったか実際にそこの出身か、ってところですよね。

- Remind me of your name. - Rachel.

お名前なんでしたっけ？　－レイチェルです。

Rachel!

ーレイチェルだ！

Rachel does math.

レイチェルは数学が得意で。

Very confident, which is going against all the things that I've said I'm looking out for.

自信にあふれてる、っていう点はウソをついている人にはむしろ全く見られない要素です。

And then Blake on the end.

それから最後のブレイク。

If you're gonna go for an American accent sometimes people go to the South first because they're like, oh I get to disguise this better.

アメリカのアクセントを真似する時に、結構南部なまりを選ぶことがあるんですよね。これだけ極端なアクセントなら上手いことごまかせるんじゃないかって考えて。

- [Interviewer] What three would you eliminate right now?

ー[インタビュワー] では、今 3 人を除外するとしたら誰ですか？

Am I about to put my career on the line is the question?

ーこの質問って、ボクの今後の仕事を左右するって感じ？

I would get rid of the men, I would say.

男性陣は除外しますね。

- [Interviewer] All right, you guys can go.

ー[インタビュワー] 分かりました、じゃあ2人とも…

How you feeling about these three?

この 3 人の中ではどうですか？

Any of these three you would eliminate?

この中で除外するとしたら？

Nadia's an enigma to me right now.

ーナディアが謎なんですよね。

If I were to get rid of one of the people I would like to get rid of Nadia, but I think she's playing a good game, so...

1 人除外するとしたらナディアなんだけど、うまい事芝居してると思うんだよな…

Ugh! Ah!

うー！あー！

Yeah, okay.

そっか、分かった。

We're gonna eliminate Nadia.

ナディアを除外します。

So right now I'm trying to think of a word that would trip up somebody that was not American.

さて、ここまで来たら、アメリカ人でない人をあぶりだす言葉を考えてみたいと思います。

And because I'm British I'm already gonna say it differently from how an American would say it.

ちなみにボクはイギリス人ですから、ボクが言う言い方はアメリカ人の言い方とは違うわけです。

The words that I would like these people to say are gonna be horror story.

この 2 人に言ってもらいたい言葉は「horror story＝ホラーストーリー」です。

Horror story?

ホラーストーリー？

Horror story.

ホラーストーリー。

Excellent.

なるほど。

I would hedge my bets that it might be Elise.

念には念を入れて、正解はエリスだと思います。

違いまーす！

I'm American.

私はアメリカ人ですよ。

Yeah, I'm actually Australian.

いや、実はオーストラリア人です。

Ah-ha! (contestant laughing)

そっか！（参加者笑う）

Yes!

やったね！

She was the most reluctant to speak, but also before you say the letter R in American it changes the way you say the vowel before it.

彼女は一番しゃべりたがってなかったんだけど、それにアメリカ人が R の文字を発音する時って、その前にある母音の発声の仕方が変わるんです。

But that doesn't happen in British and Australian accents.

でも、それってイギリスやオーストラリアのアクセントには当てはまらないんです。

We would say hor-ror, but the R clings on to it in American, it becomes horr-or.

ボクらは hor-rer って言うけど、アメリカ英語だと R がくっついて horr-er になるわけ。

Hor-ror.

Hor-rer。

Yeah, with a little less R on the end.

そう、最後の R はもっと弱くなって。

Yep, I'm never gonna be to speak in an American accent.

うん、私はアメリカのアクセントでは話せないな。

This was really great experiment.

とっても面白い実験でしたね。

I think she did a great job making the sounds, but there were just a couple of nuances that she can work on in order to convince other people.

彼女はアメリカ英語っぽい音を出すという点では上手くやれたんですけど、完全に騙しきるためにはちょっとしたニュアンスを煮詰めないとダメですね。
