no-show. Okay. A no-show can be found with or

without hyphen. So you see this noun phrase sometimes with a hyphen or without a hyphen.

Some dictionaries accept both. Some may just want it with a hyphen or vice-versa.

But anyway, let's continue here. If someone does a no-show he or she was

expected to appear or turn up and then does not actually show up. So we say

somebody did a no-show. The origin of this term is from airline jargon. So it

originally came from the airlines to refer to people who bought tickets, but

did not actually show up for the flight. Whatever the reason is. Whether I don't

know. Maybe they got into an accident or maybe they simply forgot. They overslept

or something happened that they couldn't appear that day. So you would be surprised, every

flight sometimes there's a, there's a few people that end up being a no-show. All

right. So like we say airlines have a no-show list. All right. Now, now meaning

you know, in our modern times. Now this phrase could be used for anyone who was

expected to appear at an event and does not. So it's not ... it's definitely not

limited to just Airlines, but that's where it came from originally. All right.

And we have you know , three examples here to cover this. So let's look at

example number one. I was supposed to have a blind date last night, but my date

you could also refer to the person as a date turned out to be a no-show. She stood

me up. Meaning she didn't appear. That's, that's what happens if you have a date with

someone and the other person doesn't show up, you say somebody stood you up.

Well whether it's a blind date or somebody you really know. If they don't show

up for the date and they made the date with you. Then they stood you up. Okay.

Good. Let's look at number two here. The main speaker ended up being a no-show at

this event. Yeah. So I don't know. If you called at the last minute and canceled or he

just didn't turn up for whatever reason, but he ended up being a no-show. He

wasn't there for some reason. All right . And the last one here. Number three. If you

are desperate to get on a particular flight, you can go to the airport and put

your name on a standby list and hope that there are some no-shows. Because

that's the only way you get in is if there's a no-show. Like the last five or

ten minutes before the flight is supposed to leave.

Maybe they'll allow you to get on. You know if there are no shows, especially if

it was a booked flight. Well the flight was completely booked but somebody...

but there were some no-shows at the last minute. They may allow you if you are

standby to go on the flight , so they can still fill up those seats. Anyway, I
