Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 101. The noun phrase today is
gas-guzzler. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. When a person says that a
particular vehicle is a gas guzzler, he or she means that a particular vehicle
uses up a lot of gas quickly and it's expensive to run. So usually you're
complaining about the car in some way. You're a little annoyed that it goes
through gas so quickly and that you know you have to pay a lot of money in gas in
order to run that vehicle. Then we say it's a gas guzzler. Okay. Let's continue
here. Of course the verb "guzzle" by itself means to drink a lot of something with
great excitement and enthusiasm. So you might guzzle something down. (gulping sounds )
You know like you're gulping it down. Drinking it very quickly and with a lot
of enthusiasm. So that's what the idea of guzzle comes from. If you say gas
guzzler. So it's like the car is drinking it down very, very quickly. Okay. All right.
Something with great excitement. So yeah. So we might go something down, especially if we are
extremely thirsty. Okay. so you just you don't even want to let go. You just want
to keep gulping , gulping. You can almost see ... the the muscles and the neck
you know moving as you're drinking it down. You're gulping. All right. Let's
continue. This noun phrase alludes to the idea that the vehicle is so thirsty it
consumes gas to satisfy its thirst. That's, that's the idea. That's why we call it a
gas guzzler. All right. Let's just look at three examples we have here. That old
motor home is a real gas guzzler. Yeah. any motor home really they're so big
and they're so heavy that usually they don't get very good gas mileage. Maybe
some of the newer ones might do a little better. But still they all use up
a lot of gas. They get very bad gas mileage. So they're all really gas
guzzlers. Just some are a little better than others. Well, let's look at number
two. Many people consider most SUVs to be gas guzzlers. Remember SUV stands for
sports utility vehicle. So any sort of like large you know, Jeeps or vans or
anything along that line is usually referred to as an SUV. And again they
tend to use more gas than regular cars. All right, and let's look at number three here. I
decided to trade in my old gas guzzler for a more economically-efficient
car. So it's probably a car that gets very good gas mileage. You're getting rid of
the old car for one where you get good gas mileage. Maybe you don't need it as
much. Maybe you don't need a big car anymore. Maybe before you did. A lot of
times people in the US will get big cars usually for families that sometimes
they got to carry a lot of people somewhere or you know carry a lot of
items. They're also very popular for work if somebody has a work vehicle. It's
probably going to be an SUV. But if you're just throwing you know an everyday
person that goes to the office, back and forth you probably could easily get away
with an economically efficient car. A car that gets very good gas mileage. Okay.
Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it is clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
