And in this video I'm going to talk to you about a very common writing mistake.

このビデオでは、とてもよく見られるライティングの間違いについて話したいと思います。

Now it's not so much a speaking mistake, but it's a writing, a spelling mistake that a lot of students make and I want you to fix it.

スピーキングではなくてライティングなんですね。つまり多くの学生が陥るスペルの間違いなんですけど、これをしっかりと覚えて欲しいんです。

It's the difference between "than" t-h-a-n and "then" t-h-e-n.

それは「than」と「then」の違いについて、です。

Now as you can hear the sound is practically the same, but the spelling is different.

聞いてもらうと分かると思うのですが、音でとらえるとほぼ実質同じですけど、スペルは異なります。

So you need to know the difference.

だから、違いを知っておく必要があるというわけです。

Let's take a look at two example sentences.

では、2つの例文を見てみましょう。

First we have, "John is taller than Sarah."

まずは、「John is taller than Sarah＝ジョンはサラよりも背が高い」。

So in this case, we have "than" t-h-a-n.

この場合は、「than」が使われますよね。

Which is a word that we use for comparisons okay.

この単語は比較をする時に使われますよね。

When we want to compare two things.

2つの対象を比べるわけです。

John is taller than Sarah.

ジョンはサラよりも背が高い。

I am more beautiful than you.

私の方があなたよりも美しい。

Okay?

いいですか？

In this case, you will use t-h-a-n.

この場合は、thanを使います。

Now if we look at the second sentence.

さて、2つ目の例文を見てみるとこんな感じになります。

I went to school, then I went home.

I went to school, then I went home＝私は学校に行ってから家に帰った。

Now in this case, "then" is spelled t-h-e-n and has a very different meaning.

この場合は、thenを使うのですが、意味は全く変わってきます。

We use "then" t-h-e-n as a word to mark a sequence of actions.

「then」を使うときは、継続した動作があるときです。

Okay.

いいですか？

So it's a time word that we use in English.

ということは、時間に関する英語の言葉なんです。

"I went to school...first action, and then I went home...second action."

私は学校に行って、が最初の行動で、家に帰った、は2個目の行動です。

Okay?

こんな感じですね。

So two different meanings.

つまり、2つの異なる意味なんです。

Different spellings.

スペルも違ってきます。

And it's a very common writing mistake.

そしてこれはとても一般的なライティングの間違いなんです。

My students keep making this mistake and it drives me crazy.

私の生徒はよくこの間違いをするんですけど、本当にイライラしますね。

Okay?
