  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 118. The verb phrase today is

  • to reek of something. Yeah. If we say something reeks of something it has a

  • really, really bad smell, a really strong smell. So let's look at the note here.

  • So if something or somebody, yeah you could say that a person or thing reeks

  • of something, reeks of a particular thing. He or she has a very strong unpleasant

  • smell. Or number two. If something reeks of another thing, it has a very

  • unpleasant quality. So we have two uses for it here. So we have the literal

  • meaning of truly smelling bad, like a bad odor. Or we have something where it has a

  • certain type of a quality that's unpleasant as well we can use it that

  • way. So let's take a look at several examples here. Example number one. His

  • breath reeks of alcohol. Yeah. We often hear this. You know , if you've ever been

  • close to anyone they did a lot of drinking and you could smell the alcohol

  • coming directly off of their mouth or from their mouth that's what. That's the

  • way somebody would say it. They said that their their mouth or we might say their

  • breath we might also say their breath reeks of alcohol. All right. Number two.

  • Yes. He said when he kissed Jill her mouth wreaked of cigarettes. Yeah. So if

  • especially if somebody is a nonsmoker, they'll notice this even more. If they

  • kiss somebody who was a regular smoker. Yeah. You just smell a lot of

  • cigarettes and I don't know maybe you don't mind, maybe you do mind. I don't

  • know. It depends on how much you like the person you know, it can go both ways So

  • woman could kiss a guy who's a smoker too. Maybe she'll bear it. Maybe she'll

  • put up with it. You know, she really likes that guy or vice versa. Either way, but if

  • one of them is a nonsmoker, the other one is a smoker then you know. This is this

  • is what happens. We could say they're there. You can also say that their breath

  • or their mouth reeks of cigarettes. You say that of a room too

  • sometimes if you've ever maybe if a hotel was booked up and they had a

  • smoking room. You know if you ever gone into a room where there are a lot of

  • smokers stay before you could say the room reeks of cigarettes as well. Okay.

  • Cigarette , cigarette odor. All right. Let's look at number three here. The kitchen

  • reeks of garlic. His mom cut up and added a lot of garlic

  • to her dish. This may depend I mean some people

  • really hate the smell of garlic. But I mean if you really like to eat garlic like

  • you might smell it you go, mmm good delicious. That's the way it is depending

  • upon if you really like it if you think it's a really good taste but other

  • people it definitely has a strong smell and if somebody never had it before they

  • probably wouldn't like the smell. Okay good. Let's continue, and the last one is

  • you know, the one here about an unpleasant quality you'd say that

  • government deal reeks of corruption yes this is the way that we might use it in
