Follow this 2-day itinerary and you'll get the most of your trip to The Crescent City. Start in the French Quarter. When you step foot in Jackson Square, you're surrounded by one of America's oldest neighborhoods, dating back to 1718. We recommend taking a walking tour to get a better sense of the city's history, its creole- and Greek Revival architecture, and its offbeat shops. Afterward, take one of the city's colorful streetcars up to any nearby cemetery. New Orleans' cemeteries are known for their above-ground tombs and their intricate mausoleums. Nicolas Cage has already purchased his plot here, and he'll be buried inside in a white pyramid. On day 2, spend the morning or afternoon strolling through the charming Garden District. Once known for its luscious greenery, today the neighborhood is considered one of America's best collections of antebellum and Victorian mansions. In the evening, make sure to try some of the city's most-beloved foods, like praline candies. Cajun food is the speciality here, and locals will be happy to recommend a spot for the best jambalaya. Another favorite—if you're in town from March through June—is crawfish, often boiled. Fried alligator is another staple of The Big Easy––eating them is one of the best ways to ensure they don't eat you. At the end of your weekend, hop back down to the French Quarter and grab a Hurricane at one of its iconic bars along Bourbon Street, and treat yourself to a Jazz show in the city that invented it.
