People often confuse the words specially and especially.

みんなよく、"specially" と "especially" という言葉がごっちゃになってしまいますよね。

Today, I'm gonna tell you the difference.

今日は、その違いをお教えします。

Both of these words are adverbs.

どちらの言葉も副詞です。

Especially means 'in particular' or 'most of all.'

"especially" は「特に」とか「とりわけ」という意味です。

For example:

例えば、

I like food, but I especially like sandwiches.

I like food, but I especially like sandwiches. "僕は食べ物が好きなんだけど、特に(= especially) サンドイッチが好きなんだ。"

This means that I particularly like sandwiches.

これは、かなりサンドイッチが好きだということを意味します。

They're my favourite kind of food.

サンドイッチが自分の好物なんです。

Specially, however, has a different meaning.

でも "specially" の意味は違います。

Specially means 'for a particular purpose' or 'in a particular way'.

"specially" は「決まった目的のために」とか「特別な方法で」という意味です。

So, this sandwich was specially made.

さて、このサンドイッチは特別に (= specially) 作ってもらいました。

Dan made a special sandwich just for me.

ダンは僕のためだけのサンドイッチを作ってくれました。
