You will likely hear this question at a job interview, "Why did you leave your last job? Why do
you want to leave your current job? Why are you leaving your job?"
Don't tell them negative things about your last job. Don't say, "I didn't get along with my boss.
She was too controlling. The work was too hard. The pay wasn't good at my last job." Instead
focus on why you are interested in the job you are applying for. Watch the following examples
and practice your own answer until you are an expert.
Q: Why did you leave your last job? Why do you want to leave your current job?
A: "I loved my last job, but unfortunately, the restaurant went out of business."
"I really enjoy working at the store, however, my career choice is to work at a bank. I've always
had a passion for working with money and that is what I'm currently going to school for."
"They had to downsize and since I was one of the newest workers, they laid me off."
"I liked my last job and got along with my boss and coworkers, but really want to work at a place
that challenges me and allows me to be creative. I felt that it was a little too easy for me at my
last job and I really needed more responsibility. I would love to contribute to this company in a
variety of ways."
"I really loved my job at the restaurant. I have a good boss and I have fun and dedicated
coworkers, unfortunately, they aren't getting a lot of business and for that reason, I'm not getting
a lot of hours. I feel it's time for me to seek another job where I can spend more time improving
my cooking and customer service skills. This is a great restaurant with great food that is often
very busy. I believe this would be a great place for me to work."
"I really loved working as a medical assistant and working with patients, but now that I've
received my registered nursing license, I feel that it's time to take the next step in my career. The
hospital where I currently work, doesn't have any openings for registered nurses. I've heard good
things about this hospital, so I decided to apply."
"I've loved teaching for the last 10 years. The principal at that last school really helped me to
become the teacher that I am today. His advice and encouragement really shaped my teaching.
Not only did he help me to become a better teacher, but he also inspired me to want to help other
teachers to reach their potential as instructors. For those reasons, I'm ready to take the next step
in my career and become a principal at this school."
